Looking for advice

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:19 pm

Right now I'm looking for a new game. I'm looking for something like Elder Scrolls or Fallout, doesn't necessarily have to be a RPG though, although I'd prefer that.

Some thing the game should have:

-I want a game with a huge (even bigger than Oblivion's) game world
-It should be a non-linear open world where you can go anywhere from the start
-It should have a 1st person view
-Please no mmorpg
-A good story wouldn't hurt either

I don't know if there is such a game fullfilling all my whishes, but here are many people knowing tons of games so I'd really appreciate some advice.:)

Hmm, Thief or Gothic are about all I can think of. I wouldn't really say Dragon Age, as it's not really non-linear, and while you can go anywhere from the start, it's pretty straight-forward as you progress through each area.

You're asking for a non-Bethesda game, yet that's exactly what you're looking for. The thing is that Bethesda's games are so popular because they're the only ones who do what they do well. The closest imitator I can think of is Two Worlds 2, but if you go into it expecting Bethesda-level quality you'll be sorely disappointed. There are a number of games that fall under the big open world category, but most of them are third person. Far Cry 2 is first person, but technically you can't go everywhere in that game from the start. And it's not an RPG. Then there's Just Cause 2, the Gothic series, GTA, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Witcher 2 and so on as well but none of them fit your requirements perfectly. If you want a Bethesda game, you have to play a Bethesda game, because no other games are exactly the same.

Dragon Age or Mass Effect?

... Did you even read his list at all? And I'd find it hard to believe you skipped over the top three requirements just to only read the two that DA and ME satisfy.

Mount and Blade: Warband.

There's a story but I never paid it any attention because I was too busy cracking heads with my band of merry men. Multiplayer is heaps of fun too.

This is what I say too. As someone who enjoys TES games, I think you'll enjoy Mount&Blade too. It's really fun to build up an army of men and fight from horseback and conqueror cities and castles and entire nations.

Only thing is the story is kind of thin, but again it's so much fun you don't even need one.

Actually I expected this, I just thought someone knows of a game which is closer to Bethesda games.

Oh well, then I'll look for info on those games you all mentioned here and wait for Skyrim for something I'm really looking for.

Thanks for the advice. :tes: :fallout:

Why not RDR?...open world, awesome story, great graphics (plus animations and what not), great voice acting, you can do anything you want, big world (don't know how it compares to OB though...). It's 3rd person but still...

I should have mentioned I only have a PC. But I'm really interested in that game though.

Hmm

Mass Effect is pretty much what I would say with others, but if you have a PS1 or PSP try to get Star Ocean the 2nd story. It's really a fun game and has great side areas to go into. Would recommend Super Mario RPG Legend Of The Seven Stars since it's on the Wii shopping channel for like $5 to $8. However that game is rather short once you get the hang of it and find all the little areas to explore. Probably clock in around 7 to 12hrs playing it maybe 15 if you do all the wish fulfillment missions.

To be quite frank, you're going to be hard-pressed to find games that fit all three of those criteria, especially the 1st-person perspective. If you've listed these requirements in relative order of importance, I would say go with Arcanum and the first two Fallout games: they have more quests and more explorable square-mileage than almost any other RPGs, easily enough to get lost in for months. If you're more inclined towards the last two requirements, you might look at Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, which is a great 1st- (and 3rd-) person RPG with a mostly non-linear plot; however, the maps will seem rather cramped. I'm not sure if I actually know any RPGs with worlds bigger than Oblivion's (except Daggerfall and maybe Morrowind) and certainly not any with a 1st-person view... Mount & Blade, as mentioned, does come to mind, but it's not really so much an RPG (with quests and a plot) as it is a medieval warfare simulator.

Basically, what you're really looking for is Skyrim. ;)
