Looking for FPS pc game recommendations

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:41 pm

I recently lost interest in Mass Effect 1 and the main reason was because I couldn't see my guns in my hand like in a pure fps. There's something about seeing a Blackhawk, or Terrible Shotgun (FO3), or a Flak Cannon or Shock Rifle (UT3), orrrrrrrrrrrrr the 357 Magnum in HL2! I like to see what I'm using to shoot! :flamethrower:

Maybe because it's not an fps?

Thanks for all the game ideas everyone. I'm going to re-read all the posts and jot down a few of them!

BTW is Republic Commando a Star Wars thing? Just curious.

I

Yes. I don't own it, but that's what I've read.

Counter strike source! Not for the boring game modes. The awesome mods! And tf2.

Cause if he said MP, the topic would be flooded with BC2. ;)

Haha. Well, perhaps, yes, but I haven't really played any single player FPSs lately.

OH! Another suggestion. Half Life 2. The whole series, really, but that one specifically.

By the way, why does it have to be single player?

I prefer single player games because I think there's something nice about the "playing solo" with no other factors involved. When I'm just playing against the game and there are no other humans involved, I really enjoy it. It's just a whole different dynamic. It's like this: I play Unreal Tournament 2004 multiplayer "with humans" all the time, it's my main course, after that I want dessert that's when I play Fallout 3. You understand this dynamic I'm talking about, Spanky?

Yeah, I get ya. I just didn't know if you had some sort of internet cap that didn't allow you to play multiplayer games or something.

So yeah,

Single Player: Borderlands (kinda), Stalker, FEAR, Crysis

Multiplayer: Counter Strike: Source, Borderlands (definitely)

One that's not a strict FPS in the sense of "Bang bang, you're dead" is Portal. I highly recommend it, but you should check out some videos beforehand.

Well thanks everyone for your suggestions!!!

I've made a list and here's where I stand:

Metro 2033 mainly because I've never played, but heard good things.
Unreal Tournament 3
Stalker - tried this one, but just couldn't get into it
New Vegas - I've heard nothing but bad about New Vegas, so......
Crysis also never played any game in this series
Bioshock 1 and 2 Bio 1 was awesome, maybe Bio 2
System Shock don't have a clue but I might try it
Half-Life 1 and 2 ---- 2 is one of favorite games ever played it several times though
Deus Ex ----- heard great things, tried the old one, was frustrated so I quit, maybe the new one is good?
Singularity -- I'd like to check into this
Hellgate:London
-- and this
Borderlands - it seems you either love it or hate it.....
What about Prey or that series

The one's in Orange have peaked my curiosity to the point that I'd like to look into them further. Thanks everyone, G

Just watched the Singularity trailer and it looks wicked as hail.

Add Hellgate London...it just looks utterly sick.

Metro 2033 looks awesome too....like a pure fps.

Which of the games listed in the thread have long campaigns or are the longest in terms of hours it takes to complete?

Pretty sure Halo:CE and Halo 2 is available on the PC. Depending on difficulty, skill and "wanting to use tactics instead of rushing in" makes for varying lengths of campaign. Linear yes, but despite all the hate it gets on these forums (cool to hate popular things seems to be a major theme here), it is one of my favorite series by far.

Play on Legendary if you want Halo 1 to last a while, but Heroic on either promises a fun time if you take your time and approach each fight with some thought

Won't be as good as the first. :P

I think you need to play it with the right mindset. If you're expecting the average FPS where you can go in guns blazing all the time and your shot is dead accurate, you're bound to die. If you take time to aim and use a bit of stealth it's a lot better.

Somewhere in the next Fiscal year, which starts in April. So I'm hoping in April/May.

You asked which games are longest. I haven't played many of the games you listed, but STALKER:Shadow of Chernobyl gives you your money's worth even if it isn't as long as a Bethesda game (but how many games are?).

I enjoyed the game "Prey" including
Spoiler
some memorable and intense scenes with children's ghosts
. It has an interesting game mode called Spirit Walk where you have to send your spirit out of your body in order to scout some areas, open doors, or even fight. It's not a replacement for the FPS parts of the game, it complements it. The game is relatively short but has a memorable introduction scene and Art Bell on the radio.

Hellgate:London single-player also lasts a while because you're having to travel between former subway stations in postapocalyptic London, alternating with street fighting and Hell dimensions. I recommend playing a summoner (who has elemental demons) or an engineer (flying drones), though the sniper is interesting too and there are two blade-users if you want to go the melee route. Don't expect it to be one of the best games you've played, but you might enjoy it.

I finished Bioshock 2 recently and it was good, though not as fresh as the first somehow. But it has its moments, especially
Spoiler
the level when you see Rapture through the eyes of a Little Sister: they see a beautiful version of Rapture and splicers instead of the reality. The level has to be seen to be believed; I understood immediately what the devs were portraying.

Cool tips, I'm just gathering all kinds of tips : ) Yep, I forgot that I was comparing all games to the length of Fallout 3....prolly not fair.

I'm not sure why people nag on this one so much. The portal and gravity things seemed very well implemented, and the level design was great. The Art Bell parts were pretty good too. Always listen to the entire thing. Probably couldn't take it when enemies started coming through doors that look like...erm...ladyparts.
