Looking for FPS pc game recommendations

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:22 am

Hey gang! I'm back for more pc game recommendations. I'm trying to find "SINGLE PLAYER ONLY" first person shooter games for the pc: such as Fallout 3. I'm sort of itching to play something relatively new, like games that probably were released somewhere between 2008 to 2010. I'm open to any suggestions, but I like shooter that have fairly long campaign also such as Fallout 3. FO3 is by far my favorite game in this genre, but I'm ready to play something newish...

I appreciate any game ideas you might offer. Thanks, G

Fallout 3 is a first person shooter?

Metro 2033 is pretty fun, I'd try that out. It's pretty linear though.

Farcry 2. Although most people either love it or hate it. Not quite as linear as other FPSes but some people complain about repetition. But it has a lot going for it that you don't find in many other games.

Also Unreal Tournament 3. You really can't go wrong with any of the Unreal Tournament games.

If you like Fallout 3, give the Stalker series a go.

And New Vegas, obviously.

Also, Crysis is quite fun, if your PC can handle it.

Metro 2033, although you need to know how to use stealth to beat it. Stuck fighting those [censored] communist nazis.

Bioshock, obviously. I'd say System Shock like everyone else, except I can't find it no matter how much I look!

Half-Life and friends are good fun too. Also, I kind of enjoyed XIII for the stealth/action/FPS hybrid, but never finished it due to technical problems.

Republic Commando gave me the most fun I have ever had with a FPS. Excellent story and characters and commanding your squad members is very useful, enjoyable and yet simple enough not to distract from the action. Bonus points for showing the Starwars universe through the eyes of ordinary soldiers instead of all powerful jedi.

If you don't mind third person shooters, Max Payne is awesome. Its sequel is pretty good as well.

If you're looking for another shooter with lots of RPG elements, get Deus Ex. It's only the best FPS RPG ever made.

It's also long.

Singularity is the only FPS I've enjoyed during this time. Well, it did annoy me that the game didn't offer subtitles, which is needed to understand the story among all the explosions and "russian" accents.

Oops missed that part. I agree with the STALKER recommendation. Shadow of Chernobyl was released in 2007, but with the Complete 2009 mod it looks fantastic. Call of Pripyat is also very good.

Half-Life 2 is a classic, and STALKER:Shadow of Chernobyl is worth owning. I enjoyed the single-player version of Hellgate:London in some ways, though I haven't finished it -- you can become a powerful summoner, a sniper, an engineer, and an elementalist mage among the six classes. Have you bought Mass Effect 1 and 2? Mass Effect 2 is practically a shooter (though I'm not criticizing the game, which I liked). Halo 1 and 2 were challenging even though I played them in single-player only.

Crysis and Metro 2033. Though if you don't have decent gaming hardware, both, especially the latter, will eat your GPU alive.

Well if you like Fallout 3, then try Oblivion. Basically they are the same game. Same engine, same control schemes. Same layout. Also how can you say you played Fallout 3, but you didn't say you played New Vegas. If not, why haven't you played New Vegas then?

I wouldn't consider Fallout 3 a FPS game. So do you like Roll Playing Games where you are in First Person mode? If you do, like I said, try Oblivion then. I would say Morrowind, but it doesn't match your time frame, so I guess graphics are important to you. I don't play FPS games, so this is all I can think of for you. :)

If you can wait: if I'm up on the latest news Homefront, Crysis 2, F.E.A.R. 3, Brink, Duke Nukem Forever, Rage, Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 (or so I've heard), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (although we know what that'll be worth in single player) are all due to be released between next month and the end of Q4 2011. I've checked and read Doom 4 is on its way, I guess the wait for it won't be that long. Interesting topic, I used to be almost exclusively a FPS fan before the CoD franchise went derp and conquered the market.

Crysis was a great game, but it requires a God-Like PC to run it. Republic Commando was pretty fun too.

Borderlands is kinda shallow and repetitive but it's still an extremely fun FPS/RPG crossover. It has multiplayer but only co-op, not competitive, and is perfectly playable solo.

It's pretty boring played solo though.

Metro 2033, great game.
Far Cry 2 if you like to mix emotion with gaming (in my case frustration and anger)
Crysis, so you can say you played it.
Borderlands, No. repetative and gets old quick!
STALKER, yes. Good game I'd recommend, though combat can be very frustrating.

Thanks for all the game ideas everyone. I'm going to re-read all the posts and jot down a few of them!

BTW is Republic Commando a Star Wars thing? Just curious.

I recently lost interest in Mass Effect 1 and the main reason was because I couldn't see my guns in my hand like in a pure fps. There's something about seeing a Blackhawk, or Terrible Shotgun (FO3), or a Flak Cannon or Shock Rifle (UT3), orrrrrrrrrrrrr the 357 Magnum in HL2! I like to see what I'm using to shoot! :flamethrower:

Borderlands: It's alright solo. Wouldn't be my first recommendation.

Crysis: It's a ton of fun. No battle goes the same twice and throwing turtles is always good.

STALKER: I couldn't get into it, but people love it, so try it?

By the way, why does it have to be single player?

Cause if he said MP, the topic would be flooded with BC2. ;)
