If the only thing you'd like is less hand holding then I'm not sure if it's worth $20. The learning curve is high(er) than Skyrim and it's isn't because the game holds your hand.
1: The combat isn't bad, it just follows a very strict older format. If you're ever played any turn based RPGs or D&D you probably will have a sense of nostalgia over the combat. I don't find it frustrating as I'm somewhat accustomed to getting slaughtered because the enemies are not rubber banded to me via level (level scaling), but it may be somewhat frustrating for you if you're not used to such combat.
2: It's very easy to essentially handicap yourself in the beginning if you're not careful with how you select your class, race, and sign. That being said you can get some awesome synergy between the 3 if you re-roll a couple times and do some research.
3: The game is dated graphically however I recommend a mod called Morrowind Overhaul which provides a wide range of updated textures, models, sounds, and also some shaders. There are points where Morrowind looks better than Skyrim to me. However whether it be the mod, or the dated sound design some of the sound volumes are screwy where everything sounds loud despite range.
4: The game is slow, and not in a bad way. Skyrim is like a roller coasting, while Morrowind is like a lazy river (at least at first) I'm not very far so I'm unsure if the speed quickens at some point but I'm okay with slowly making my way through Morrowind. Expect to spend more time in towns just walking around than actually fighting anything.
I've only been playing for maybe 5-10 hours of Morrowind and after re-rolling 6-8 times I'm maybe 5% through the main storyline. I've been switching between Skyrim and Morrowind and I'd heavily recommend that if you're going to play Morrowind and they provide two totally different experiences. But as I said before if you're only looking for a more adventure like feeling, of exploration I'd recommend watching some LPs (Lets Plays) of Morrowind first, or buying Minecraft.
