Looking For A Little Insight

Post » Wed Aug 17, 2011 10:56 pm

Ok i started the Elder Scrolls Series with Morrowind, The Oblivion and now Skyrim. Im just wondering if anyone can give me a watered down timeline between the games and lore and what i should expect after skyrim. or maybe you can give me some titles of novels that also explain the storyline. I appreciate any info.

Hm....well, theres alot that happened xD I recommend the wiki for any storyline info but basically, the elder scrolls is a prophecy that the games are revolved around (more or less) and skyrim is the next game with the next part of the prophecy.

The timeline is rough given the source, but it's what you desire.

The Imperial Library has all of the in-game literature. Though you can always run Morrowind or Oblivion and check out your local bookstore :D

Well there is "The Infernal City" by Greg Keyes which takes place about 50 years after Oblivion and it has a sequal coming out soon(I think next month). Not sure if its canon or not but I don't see any reason it wouldn't be.

Besides the Novel mentioned we don't know much about what happened in-between Oblivion and Skyrim.

As for Morrowind --> Oblvion the only things of any interest occured in the games. Look at the timeline I post and scroll down to the fifth century. That is a water-downed easemant of what happened from Daggerfall to Oblivion(end of third era).

Late Merretic Era: A clan of Aldmeris departure to the distant promised land of Resdayn, led by the prophet Veloth. These people would become the Chimer, the ancestors of the Dunmer. Following a few centuries after their settlement, the Chimer are threatened by their neighbours, the Dwemer (Dwarves, "The Deep Ones"), who enlist the aid of the Nords in their conquest of Resdayn. The Chimer leader Nerevar calls upon the blessing of the Daedra lord Azura to help him in stopping this peril. She responds, and soon the Dwemer turn coat on the Nords, and the two nations of Mer drive out the invaders. For a time after, they lived in peace whith each other. Though, admitedly, a fragile peace, for the Dwemer had radically different beliefs than the Dunmer. After a while, it is discovered that the Dwemer master artificer, Kagrenac, is performing experiments on the Heart of Lorkhan in order to immortalize his race. Appalled by this news, Nerevar tries to confront the Dwemer king about this. But the confrontation turns bad, and soon the Dwemer and Dunmer waged war once again. In the midst of the battle at Red Mountain, the cornered Kagrenac performs one last desperate rite on the Heart, and the whole Dwemer race mysteriously disapears from the face of Nirn. Nerevar dies in the battle, and his three advisors Vivec, Almalexia and Sotha Sil use the Heart of Lorkhan to turn themselves into demigods to rule over Resdayn as immortal rulers. Azura punishes them for this blasphemy by turning all of the Chimer's skin dark (making them Dunmer, "The Dark Ones"), and foretells the reincarnation of Nerevar as the Nerevarine.

At this time, Tamriel is ruled by a number of disparate kingdoms of Mer known as the Ayleids (Heartland High Elves). They were known as unbelievably powerful wizards and also ruthless slavers.

1E, 242-243: A huge rebellion rises in the Ayleid kingdoms. The rebellion comprises of a alliance among the slaves, led by Aless(ia) (hence she is called the Slave Queen), and the Nords of the north. The Ayleids respond by summoning Daedra to aid in suppressing the rebellion. What happens at this time is surrounded in myth and legend. Supposedly the Slave Queen made a covenant with the Dragon God of Time, Akatosh, and mingled her blood with his. As a result of this act, the gates to the Daedric Realms are sealed, the Ayleids are left with nothing but their own squalid numbers to deal with the rebels, and thus fall and over time get completely driven out of the continent's heartland. Bestowed with her new divine nature, Alless forms the first Empire, crowning herself as Saint Allessia, the first empress.

1E, 1200-1E 2208, 1st Era: A group of fanatical priests in the Empire known as the Maruhkati Selective attempt to erase an aspect of Akatosh that made him "The High Elven God" (do not ask me how that works). As a result of this dangerous rite "the Dragon breaks" and time becomes non-linear. Noone knows what happened during the Dragon Break or how long it lasted. What is known, however, is that the First Empire disapeared as a result. The end date of the Dragon Break is only agreed upon by consensus, as no one can know for sure how long it lasted.

1E, 2703: As depicted by the book "Remanada", a new Dragonborn Emperor named Reman Cyrodiil emerges, the Second Empire is formed.

1E, 2920: The Second Era begins with the end of Reman's bloodline.

2E, 827: Tiber Septim is born.

2E, 852: Tiber Septim leads an army to battle the allied forces the Nords and Bretons, who are on a conquest of Tariel's north-west. In the midst of the war, Tiber Septim receives a vision that tells him of a powerful relic in the ruins of Sancre Tor (Reman Cyrodiil's birthplace and tomb of his lineage), currently occupied by his enemies. Tiber Septim leads his forces on a daring skirmish to capture the ruins and succeeds, and finds the Amulet of Kings (the artifact associated with the covenant between Allesia and Akatosh), which he uses (along with the Numidium and supposedly his Dragonborn powers) to forge the Third Empire. Thus the septim bloodline is established.

2E, 896: As they've done with other provinces, The Empire conquers Morrowind (formerly called Resdayn). The Tribunal (the three demigods) are unable to thwart the invasion, as they had bigger problems stretching their resources thin. In 2E 882, the fallen leader of the lost house Dagoth, Dagoth Ur has awoken as a twisted monstrosity that spread Blight and Corpruss disease in all directions from Red Mountain. Though the Tribunal managed to contain the threat with the Ghostfence, their power slowly dwindles as they are sewered from the source of their divine nature - the Heart of Lorkhan, which Dagoth Ur has seized control over.

2E, 896: After uniting all of Tamriel under his rule, Tiber Septim pronounces the beginning of the Third Era.

3E 389-3E 399: Jagar Tharn uses the Staff of Chaos to usurp the Empire, but is thwarted by the heroes of TES I: Arena and TES Legends: Battlespire.

3E 405: A mysterious agent is sent to High Rock by Emperor Uriel Septim VII. This agent is the protagonist of TES II: Daggerfall, and is enravelled in the finding and reactivation of the Numidium and the resulting event called "The Warp in the West", during which, much like the Dragon Break, time became non-linear. During this time-space chaos the kingdoms of High Rock waged civil war, and after it all ended, the province emerged changed beyond recognition.

3E 427-3E 432: The emperor mysteriously releases a prisoner and conscripts him into the Blades to deal with the troubles in Morrowind. This prisoner quickly discovers that he is no mere mortal, but the prophesied Nerevarine, whose mission is to destroy the corrupted house Dagoth and bring down the false Tribunal Gods. These are the events of TES III: Morrowind and the expansion Tribunal (Bloodmoon has no impact on the storyline). After it's all done, the Nerevarine embarks on an expendition to distant Akavir, and is never heard from since.

3E 433: The Oblivion crysis, during which the Septim bloodline is severed and the gates to Oblivion open, ushering in an invasion by the Daedra Lord Mehrunes Dagon. The invasion is thwarted by the Hero of Kvatch, later to be called the Champion of Cyrodiil, who's the protagonist of TES IV: Oblivion. But this victory comes at a great cost of the life of the last heir to the throne, Martin Septim, and the Empire falls into shambles as a result. And thus the Fourth Era begins.

4E, 1: Without the power of the last surviving Tribunal ruler, Vivec, the floating island-prison called The Ministry of Truth crashes into Red Mountain and causes a cataclysm that kills thousands. Shortly after, the weakened Dunmer nation's lands are invaded by forces from Black Marsh, and conquered.

Around 4E 43: The events depicted in "The Infernal City".

It is canon, that's why all the Dunmers hate it :D

Edit: And I think you should totally play Arena and Daggerfall now before Skyrim! They're free to download from Bethesda's website!
