Looking for a mod that overhauls the item ownership/theft sy

Post » Mon Aug 08, 2011 3:13 am

Hiya,

Is anybody aware of a mod that changes the game mechanics for theft of items? I am looking for something that allows you to steal items and sell them to regular shopkeepers. After all, how could they know the item was stolen in the first place? Of course they should notice if you stole the item from the same shopkeeper (or a relative) you are trying to sell to!

Looking forward to any pointers you might have!

Cheers,
Doomguy

I went looking for this type of mod once. From what I remember, it is a game mechanic that is difficult to get around. I remember there being a mod or two that tried to get around it, but none of them were to my liking. Unfortunately, I can't remember any names, so I can't point you to them. I know there are mods that add merchants you can sell stolen items to. My memory isn't serving me well here, so hopefully someone else can give you a more detailed answer.

It's easy to add merchants that can buy stolen goods. The issue being that that then undermines completely the thieves guild questline rewards of fences.

Not buying goods stolen from them is not really possible. To the game a stolen item is a stolen item.

I'm certain that this is possible based upon the mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22414, which under some circumstances clears the "stolen item" flag from things as a side-effect. With this mod, the side-effect can only occur for ingredients, potions & poisons, keys, scrolls, and ammo. However, this clearly indicates that something more general could exist.

Edit: Some quick poking around turned up http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35723 which makes it so that item are only flagged as stolen if you're observed taking them in the first place, and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22713 which just makes all merchants buy items flagged as stolen. I haven't tried either of these mods, though I'm now considering trying the former.

As previously stated, this would diminish the rewards of the thieves' guild questline, but their ability to clear your bounty is still pretty handy.
