Looking for a more FPS oriented experience

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:35 am

I recently felt compelled to play Fall Out again, after watching the movie "The Road". The beautiful dark, oblique and gloomy scenarios portrayed in the movie awoke a nostalgia for all post-apocalyptic in me.

Having played Fallout3 many years ago I reckon its dark atmosphere would suit my tastes better than the yellowy sands of the Mojave desert, however the inclusion of the iron sights view in New Vegas weighs the balance heavily on its side. Besides I'm sure by now there must be some good weather mods that allow you to customize the weather colors.

Anyways, after a personal war with myself (I abhor steam) , I gave in and bought falloutNV. I just finished installing and testing, and now I'm looking for mods that would make the game as similar to a First Person Shooter as possible and by that I mean, Increased weapon damage, lower player and NPCs health, adjusted AI so that they don't mindlessly charge in front of the bullets with a bat, disable VATS and most important detach weapon damage and accuracy from the weapons skill. In fallout3 this was the biggest turn off for me,
I took a look at a very interesting Mod called Project Nevada, at Newvegasnexus. I like very much its gameplay changes as far as combat mechanics is related and I will install it. But I wonder if perhaps there are other less popular mods that change the combat mechanics even further to make it more like an FPS.

I realize there probably is no mod that completely detaches weapon damage from the weapons skill, but I'm willing to mod that on my own.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

It may not be that helpful, but I swear I remember seeing a mod before that detached weapon damage from skill, so that with guns it only affected the accuracy. I believe though that it was a rather high-end one, so it might be found in either the top 100 or Files of the Month on the Nexus.
It's actually not a terribly simple thing to do in a mod, because the setting that affects this works with all weapons, both guns and melee. And melee only gains damage from skill, making the melee/unarmed skills nearly worthless if you do that. So then you have to mod in an artificial bonus for the melee/unarmed skills through script.
The good thing is that I'm pretty sure the mod did that as well.
Also, I'm pretty sure the mod was a general combat overhaul that did a lot of other things.
I'm working on a mod myself that does this, but it won't be out for a long while since I'm currently preoccupied with my outfit mod.

As for the dark ambience, there are plenty of mods in the top files which do that as well.

Thank you, I will look a bit more and see if I can find that mod.

Right now I have a few mods besides Project Nevada, namely "Enemies AI revamped", "R.A.C.E" and "Electrocity imaginator".
I'll see if I can find a mod that allows you to play after the main quest is finished. Any recommendations ?

I don't know about continuing past the end. I haven't finished it myself, but I've heard the ending is rather... final. Such that it wouldn't make any logical sense to continue past it. The best option is to just avoid doing the last quest I think.

Well, it turns out that Project Nevada is truly a magnificent mod. Very well put together and it satisfies all of my combat requirements by allowing me to customize all the settings. I disabled the link between weapon damage and weapon skill as well as the aided aim right from the game, by moving a simple slider. So I guess thats that :)

Now, I am having a hard time finding a weather mod that suits my tastes. I tried Nevada Skies, and Fellout but they do the complete opposite of what I want, by making the skies more blue, brighter and shinier instead of dull and opaque.
I don't know whether to alter one of these or simply set the vanilla clear weather chances to 0. So that is always either cloudy or foggy or rainy. Might as well have to make a simple script controlling the transitions. They occur way too fast and unnaturally.

Oh and I found a mod that allows you to continue playing after finishing the main quest. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=42428

Project mkI has tons of neat features. Well for a weather mod that is. I absolutely love it and it brings that very... er. Depressing feeling to the New Vegas? =D

Exactly what I was looking for. Plus is customizable. I love the hazy and cloudy weathers :)

About the FPS feeling..after all the customization I've done and all the favorable changes made by PN I still found something wasn't quite right...the aiming.
Your weapon moves like crazy when you aim it. If your arms are crippled that is understandable, and realistic even. But that is not the case. Even when crouched the weapon movement makes it very hard to hit someone from a reasonable distance, let alone connect a headshot.

Currently I'm researching the precise game settings controlling this mechanic. So far I've had no good results.The only solution I found is to use a "steady" chem. That makes the aiming just perfect. After using a steady and checking the game settings related to weapon spread mentioned in the wiki I find that the steady doesn't alter any of those in any way, which makes me think the effect is hardcoded.

I made a simple mod that adds a permanent steady effect to the player. If I can't find other ways to achieve this result that'll have to do for now. The mod checks that the player has no crippled limbs, if so it adds the effect. While aiming your AP is drained slowly, simulating a breath meter. If your AP is completely depleted (you ran out of air) the effect is removed.
A very simple concept but it has completely improved my game. For those like me, that don't use VATS, this is essential. I will upload it to the nexus site after I Implement a few more features like controlling the effect with a button and polishing a few rough edges. I'm sure there must be at least a few other players that don't like the default aiming mechanics.

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=34723 <- That's what you want. Basically it "fixes" OR you could say does its best in removing the "auto-aim" in New Vegas. Make sure it's loaded AFTER any overhauls or realism mods like Project Nevada.

Not sure if that's what you want.

Oh and here's a minor tweak to your Fallout.ini if you'd like to try it out. It'll literally make your mouse smooth (if you use one that is) as it gets rid of mouse acceleration.

Add these in the [Control] section

fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0

Smoother gameplay would be the most important for me in terms of an FPS, so any mod like that would be good for fallout.
