Looking For an MP3 player

Post » Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:31 pm

So you settled for 24 gigs, down from 60? :P

I settled on carrying half of my music collection at a time.

The 32GB MicroSDHC card was like $80 more. Not worth the extra money just for 16 more gigs.

A 60 gig MP3 player for under 200$? That'll be hard to find, I mean, for that amount of space you HAVE to pay for it. That's a lot of storage for an MP3 player.
I don't see why you wouldn't get an iPod though, you don't have to use iTunes if you don't want too. The quality is great, and they rarely ever stop working. I've had my same iPod for almost 5 years and it still works like new. It's only a 10 gig though.
"I don't like Apple" isn't really a reason not to buy a superior product, IMO, but that's just MO. :P

Except iPods are not superior products.

As an iPod owner, I can think of all sorts of reasons not to own an iPod. A new thing about them annoys me each week, but this week it's the fact it wont just play one song from an album and then stop. What if I want it to do that? If I wanted the whole album to play I'd have pressed play over the album, not an individual track half way through. Stupid iPod.

I like the Ipod, a lot.

Mutant, it is in the settings. Lol.

If you want 60 gigs...just carry a REALLY small laptop with you. Na, just kidding man. You can't get those.

That's a great deal, but that product has gotten a lot of poor reviews. So I'm hesitant.

And I suppose I can go under 60 gigs. I don't have to always have my full music collection with me at all times.

Defron, that Zen X-Fi looks real nice. Reasonably priced too.

I'll check back again tomorrow evening. Off to bed.

One thing that needs to be said about the Archos tablets is how big they are, when I was looking for an Mp3 player I was impressed by their features and prices till I saw a picture of someone holding on, the thing is massive.

And the Sansa View is worth taking a look at, I had mine for a long time before it broke.

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-View-Video-Player/dp/B00126NSVE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1283382409&sr=1-1

I would recommend getting the second one and just using the SD card though.

The reason why they have gone to smaller capacities is because they've gone from hardrive to flash. Trust me, thats a big improvement. Unfortunately I doubt you could buy any flash based 60GB + device for under 200USD unless you go for a horrid hardrive based Mp3 player. Personally I have a Cowon s9 which is great even though it is aging a little. For a more mp3 dedicated device and if you care about sound quality or battery life I highly reccomend you check out other Cowon devices.

S9 FTW! I've been eying up one of their new J3's, they do look pretty nice.

Well the cell phones I had, came with cables to hook up to the PC so I can tranfer the files over, so no need to take the card out, unless you have no cord. But if you are looking to buy new MP3 player for $150, you can get like an Apple if you can switch your plan to something like that. You can get some good cell phones for that price range. You might even get the phone for free depending on the plan you get.

I don't need to connect the MicroSDHC card to my computer, right? Simply having it in the MP3 player will allow me to put the music on it?

Yup, just insert the MicroSDHC card and its memory will become a part of Sansa Fuze's memory. http://www.sandisk.com/media/343157/fuze_um_0809_eng.pdf, btw. A useful advice: make sure the connection type in the player's preferences is set to MSC (instead of MTP). That way the player will simply be recognised as a USB stick.

I have a 120GB Zune, and compared to the 120GB iPod I had for a couple years, I like the Zune better overall. Even though the Zune is plagued with some glitches, like all-of-a-sudden battery drainage. I also prefer the Zune media player to iTunes (frankly, almost anything is better though). Battery life is shorter, but if you're just looking to use it for music you should be okay. I usually go about four days or so and then need to recharge. I have only ever used iPod and Zune though, so beyond them I can't really give you any more specific advice.

Correction: Sansa Fuze sees the MicroSDHC card as a part of its memory, but when you connect a Sansa Fuze with a MicroSDHC card in it to your PC, it will see it as two separate drives - one will be Sansa Fuze, the other MicroSDHC card. (http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Fuze/Cannot-fill-8GB-SDHC-card/m-p/134046/highlight/true#M33112) This is actually better for you because you know whether you're putting your music files on Sansa Fuze's internal memory or on the MicroSDHC card.

I actually had a wierd moment when my zune broke (120GB). I went into the store to get a replacement and the 120 was discontinued :swear: , replaced by a 16 and 32 GB flash with internet. Apple, on the other hand, had a 140 GB classic for sale.

It was a test of faith I tell you.

I refuse to buy any Apple product. I'm not getting an iPhone.

Thanks for that. Even though the computer will it as two separate devices, I'm glad the Sansa will see it all as one.

Click on shuffle. Beside shuffle, it says either Songs, Albums, or Off. Put it on songs by clicking it.

I used to have the same problem, then I saw the setting and realized that I was fooled all along.

But I don't want it to do that either. I want it to do what all other mp3 players do; if I click "play" on one song, it plays that song and then it stops. I don't see what's wrong with that...

Ideally I'd like it to have a playlist function that's not awkward and unintuitive too...

I haven't seen a single MP3 player in my whole life which behaves like that. They all have various modes of playing - continuous, repeat a single album or repeat a single song - but none of them simply stops after playing one song. That would be simply ridiculous, counter-productive and not to mention tiring because you'd have to click it out for every single song you wanted to listen to. If you want it to stop after it's done playing a song, press stop after it's done playing a song. I know - shocking.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about it. Hitting stop is tough, and such a huge burden in this busy life of ours. God forbid we actually do something. Hitting one button. Sheesh. What will Apple throw at us next. :shakehead:

Not to mention that if the player's behaviour indeed was such that it automatically stopped playing after a single song, you'd all in all have to press more buttons because instead for having to press a button only when you want to stop it playing music you'd have to press two buttons when you wanted it to advance a song (yes, two buttons - one to switch it to the next song and the other to start it playing).

Then you make a temporary playlist of that one song.

And it will stop.
