Looking for a new TV

Post » Mon Aug 03, 2015 11:57 pm

Howdy folks,

As technology improves, it seem that the font gets smaller...and my arms need to be longer as I get older.

With that, we're for a new TV in the 38" - 42" range. I've done ome looking around, but am curious what you come up with for suggestions on brands, refresh, etc. Seems that we're at the cusp of ize categories.

Other info:

We're not big into netflix at this time

Not big gamers, only a wii unless we win a lottery. - or an old 360

Seating is roughly 13ft. away, one has a very oblique angle.

Very little direct sunlight on the screen.

Price, less than $500, ideally $350 - $400

So, what suggetsions do you have? At that screen size, how important is 1080p and 120 refreh? (seems 60 is stanadard)

Thanks

Rumbly

Also, if someone can get a link to the TV thread from a couple month back, that would be great...I failed the serach

Cheers!

You know there was a website that actually had a search function on tv based on what you are providing... I'll go check around to see if I can remember it.

found it

http://www.rtings.com/

Also I just noticed manufacturers are refreshing their models so it might not be too helpful

Looking for a big screen on a budget? Get Vizio's 55-inch E-Series, which costs less than $600 but offers a good picture with a full-array LED backlight. Want a stunning cinema experience and you're willing to pay top dollar for it? Splurge for the LG 55EC9300, an OLED TV that offers the most gorgeous picture we've ever seen in a stunning curved design. There's now a 4K version as well.

In between is a wide range of sizes, prices and features. The gaze on roomfuls of TVs with all kinds of content — HD and 4K — to find the best model for whatever delights you: be it for game day, movie night or fragfest. I have pushed all the TVs' buttons, navigated their menus and run their smart TV apps.

I bought this http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN39FH5000FXZA awhile back. Colors are just perfect after a bit of tweaking and we haven't had a single issue since we bought it. Our sitting arrangement is similar to yours it seems (14ft.) and, tbh, I kinda wish we would have waited and saved up more $$ for a bigger screen, like 40" or 42", as the 39" just doesn't...idk, fill the room?! as I thought it would at first.

I would definitely go for full 1080p, especially if you're using HD programming; satellite, bluray, etc. If you're not really a TV/movie buff, 720p isn't too bad at that size, imo, especially at 13ft. away.

Now, 120r isn't really needed at all, imo, but it all depends on the person, my fiance doesn't see the big difference in it. I suggest for ya to look at the difference in 60-to-120 at a local store and see how you compare them before deciding to spend more for 120. That particular model does have a 60r version for about ~$100 less, IIRC. Best purchase I've made in a long time.

The distance thing is something that we wonder about. We can go up to 42" wiht the tand that we have, and with the font getting smaller it would seem that bigger is better. We're uing a 27" CRT at the moment, so the "fill the room" isn't really a concern. REad a CNet article that said the size should be 60-90 inches from 12 feet!
