I am looking for a shows , movies or/and books

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:27 pm

Well recently I am gotten quite bored of playing the few games I still find amusing and I need something new.
Does anyhow have any good suggestions of science fiction shows , movies and books? Most preferably steampunk .
Personally I am looking into watching this "Doctor Who" show , sure it isn't steampunk but I need something awesome in the science fiction realm that I may like.
Any suggestions ? Is Dr Who a waste of my time?

Stephen Baxter has some good Science Fiction books, I particularly like his Manifold time series.

The Ender series by Orson Scott Card is good. Not steampunk though.

Not at all steampunk, but you can't have Sci-Fi without 2001: A Space Odyssey, the book and movie. Both are among my favorites.

If you're into anime, Fullmetal Alchemist has a steampunk-esque feel to it, along with obviously alchemy.

There is a video game with a Steampunk civilization (as one of 3 factions) if you like RTS Games. It's called Rise of Legends.

Lastly there's an anime movie called Howl's Moving Castle.

Just some basic suggestions.

The Dune series by Frank Herbert is excellent. Also, anything by Philip K. dike, and the Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison.

There's also Arcanum. It's a steampunk RPG.

Well I have watched both seasons of Fullmetal and I have also watched Howl's Moving Castle as well.
But anybody have any opinions on Doctor Who?

I've never watched/read the new Doctor who series, but I really enjoyed the old black&white Doctor Who tv series when I was younger.

I have read the first four books but wolves of calla is just I have no idea. It seems a struggle to continue reading the rest of the series.

I'll second this. The entire series (including what his son has put together) will keep you busy for many hours. Also check out the works of Richard Matheson (I Am Legend). His novels are great, but avoid the short stories as they are of mixed quality.

C.S. Lewis' Perelandra series is also a great diversion.

Anything by H.G. Wells.

I have no clue what steampunk literature is, so this is all I have.

I don't know what "steampunk" is. Maybe cause I'm old.

But, might I suggest "Battlestar Galactica - Reboot".

Dr Who will be hard to find since it is all over the place as in no obvious order when I rented a dvd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_in_the_Fireplace.. There are probably more but like I said good luck trying to find the older episodes because it looks like a worst money grab than X.5 dvd season releases.

I don't really understand what makes something truly steampunk/cyberpunk so I can't list anything specific for that.

Books:
Old Man's War by John Scalzi. It's not a detail-love fest but it's a great read imo. The sequel Ghost Brigades wasn't anywhere as good, but the next one, The Last Colony, was close/enjoyable.
Alan Dean Foster's Pip& Flinx series, IceRigger trilogy, and the occasional stand-alone, "Commonwealth" novels are fun. They're usually not too long, so nice quick reads.
Jack L. Chalker's Well World series.

TV: Dunno, I think 95% of sci-fi on TV is mediocre at best, and haven't liked too much made in recent years. I did like Firefly (took me a while to get into it) & the original Stargate SG-1 series w/Richard Dean Anderson.
Dr. Who, imo, depends on who's playing in it at the time. There was a period where I liked the show way way way back (oops meant - Tom Baker), and then again (Christopher Eccleston), but inbetween I often don't like it at all.

I can't find any good ones either. television svcks at the moment, and I have been waiting for it to get better... Dr. Who was ok the first couple of seasons, then it got kind of too weird and confusing for me. I am waiting for a series that will kill off the very king of sci-fy itself. DIE STAR WARS DIE!!!!!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld Won Hugo and Nebula award.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Your_Scattered_Bodies_Go Won Hugo award.

Go check them out, both hard science fiction, both old, both have aged very well. Ringworld is just a great adventure set in Niven's Known Space setting. Ahead of its time and has an interesting look at luck, evolution and genetics.

While TYSBG is a historical Sci Fi book about all of Earths inhabitants from the dawn of man into the 21st century being resurrected on the banks of the great River, on a strange planet. this leads to some novel encounters, like Mark Twain, a Viking, a Neanderthal and some Nazis hanging out together.

To be technical, Its Sir Richard Francis Burton, a Neanderthal, Herman Goering, an Alien, and a bunch of others in the first book 'To Your Scattered Bodies Go'. The second book 'The Fabulous Riverboat' has Mark Twain, a Viking, a prehistoric giant hominid, The Red Baron, King John Lackland, Cyrano De Bergerac and a bunch more. Both are part of the RiverWorld series. There was a whole lot of 'world' books in the 60's and 70's. Ringworld, Waterworld, River World, all different, just with world at the end. Ringworld series is better than the Riverworld series IMO.
