Looking for a small, flat, solo settlement

Post » Mon Jan 11, 2016 5:47 am

Afternoon all,

I've finished the main quest and turned my attention to crafting. I've had settlers go into the room I build for my self, go into my safe, take out fusion cores and help them selves to my power armour! I could do the thing of taking the door away but I don't want to enter workshop every time to get in...

What I want is a solo place to call home, small with flat land. I just want to put walls up and have a shack inside. And some turrets.

I was told Boston Airport is perfect for that? But that's in BoS territory and I sided with the minutemen at the end, not sure if I'd be allowed it?

Any recommendations? For just a very small settlement with no prebuilts/houses, everything can be scrapped and flat land?

Thanks all

I would recommend Starlight Drive In. You can scrap the radioactive barrels in the small water filled crater in the middle to clear the radiation hazard and once you scrap all the cars and other random stuff your left with a huge flat-ish area to build on. You can throw down some foundation such as the concrete blocks or the wooden pillar floors to make a truly level surface to throw some buildings on top of. The water filled crater can support the largest water purifier too if you feel like setting one of those up too.

Agree, I was saving this spot to build my final settlement at endgame when I become rich and able to build whatever I want.

Jamaica Plain or Hangmen's are also options, though they are not as wide-open as Starlight. Starlight is the flattest and easiest to build, also if the rads are a problem

Spoiler
you can remove those barrels

Well, there's technically a way to destroy the Brotherhood as the Minutemen if you manage to become enemies with them, but unless you don't like the Brotherhood you might not like that idea.

Starlight Drive-in is really good, yeah. I also like Sunshine Tidings Co-Op (lots of existing buildings though). Spectacle Island is the ultimate hermit's paradise, but it's a bit tricky to get there without fast travel. And pretty challenging to clear out as a viable settlement. But oh so worth it.

For a small settlement:

I suggest Outpost Zimonja. It already has a building, it's small and also has some guard posts. You can easily wall it off and place some turrets.

Or use Hangman's Alley, which is small and has flat ground. It's also easily defensible and has one guard post plus walls with doors already.

My main HQ is Starlight Drive In, that's where I store all my stuff and most of my companions and settlers hang out there. I can't wait to get Spectacle Island, haven't been that far yet. :D

Or Red Rocket and build your shack on the roof.

I would say Red Rocket, however, I have not completed the game myself and I have only been exploring the map north of Diamond City (DC). I still have not fully explored the area north of DC yet and I have just started doing a tiny bit of exploring south of DC.

I have not really done much of the main quest since I have not spoken with Nick Valentine yet to for my missing son. I have primarily been focused on grinding for resources to work on my 6 settlements that are in various states of construction. Starlight Drive is a nice place for a decent size settlement since it is flat. Thus far I have built two industrial water purifiers there along with some turrets... just in case. I have no settlers there yet. I simply visit that place once in a while to collect the water and sell 'em.

There are a few places (Greygarden, Finch Farm) where the highway overpass above is within the buildable area of the settlement. In addition to scrapping the cars up there, you can also build up there. Place the fast travel pad up there when you're done and remove the stairs, and you won't have settlers wandering about.

There is an off, off, off chance of provisioners spawning up there, which can be annoying, but they don't really hurt anything and once you leave the cell, they go back to normal.

I'd recommend doing it above Greygarden and never recruit more settlers than the robots, since they stick to their routines and never steal your stored items.

You can actually build your own private retreat anywhere, as long as you can build an elevated or multi-floor building. I use Red Rocket and Hangman's Alley, just build an elevated building that has no stairs and place the fast travel mat, where you would like. I place right in front of my crafting and storage section, for ease of use. Then when you fast travel back to your fortress of solitude *poof* there you are, with no way any body could disturb you.

There's a marina in the southwest portion of the map that's pretty nice. it has a named character there though. Not sure if she would mess with your stuff.

Depends on how big you want to build it.

Small - Red Rocket, because its close to Sanctuary and you can build on top. Its small, but vertically high. You can oversee your minions at Sanctuary easily and if you build turrets near the road to Sanctuary, they can actually help with attacks on Sanctuary.

Medium - Finch Farm, either use the people there as supply lines or kill them. You can build stairs leading up to the highway above, nice flat area, best used with the farm land to farm adhesive.

Large - Star-light drive in, can scrap the radiation barrels, and build up higher than the theater screen. I call my personal settlement there Fivepenny Tower, because its shaped and almost as tall as Tenpenny Tower from fallout 3. Great place to do a "stark" tower type of thing with all your power armor.

(on a side note, never leave Fusion Cores in storage. Because even if there is no one there, they can still be taken by NPCs like Trashcan Carla or things like that)

I sent two settlers to Graygarden for guard duty. Every time I go there at least one of the settlers is always at the top of the highway and I find it to be very annoying. I am considering:

1. Reasiging them to another settlement and only use turrets to protect the settlement.

2. Use "MarkForDelete" to delete the highway permanently (if possible).

Thanks guys, I actually unlocked Spectacle Island last night without having to kill anything by rushing the little puzzle they have there, it's massive! Way too big for just me...

Red rocket puts me off because of the existing/unscrapable building... I'll checkout starlight later this evening!

I'm not too sure where I stand with the BoS - they don't try to shoot me on sight or anything but at the same time their leader always says he's busy when I go up to speak to him...

Taffington Boat House - lovely place with an enclosed boat dock next to the main house. Only down side is that the roof is sharply angled and I was never able to get a roof OVER it.

The Slog has a lot of pre-existing people, but it also has a swimming pool, backs up to a river down the hill (diving / water-golfing platforms above it) and a perfectly intact concrete building with a flat roof.

With enough resources and patience I was able to build a second story and roof above the house, it's a shame cause I really liked the "colonial" look of the house but I have to have a roof over my head.

I'm calling shenanigans on this one. While it's true settlers can take from regular containers, they cannot take from safes. I've an entire floor of crates with weapons, aid, ammo, and armor for my settlers. Though I don't take inventory on each one, I don't mind if they take from those. That's why they're available.

My safes have fusion cores next to my power armor, and with over 7 days playing, they've never taken a single one. There is only one safe in the containers section. Are you sure you picked the right one? It's flat, and sets on the floor.

Aside from that, if you're looking for a tight little area to call home, Hangman's Bluff is a fantastic little settlement. It's very small, flat, and literally right across the street from Diamond City. You may need to bring a few materials there, because there's not much to break down.

Speaking of Diamond City, for 2000 caps, you can buy a house. You can't build much inside of it (decorations and furniture only), and you'll definitely need to bring more supplies if you want to deck the place out, but it's got a 100 bolt fuse box (more than enough power for, uh, jukeboxes, I guess), a nice layout, and no one enters unless they're your companion. This is probably the safest option if you're concerned about missing items.

100% Bro the guy went into my floor safe and it's the only place I keep cores, maybe that's why? Because they were only available from there to them? I don't know about lock picking and how that transpires to npcs? Maybe a safe is no different than a container to them? Maybe this guy had bobby pins??? Maybe They're not actually locked, the ones you build? But it happened for sure!

you can convince her to leave...

I'm a fan of Kingsport Lighthouse. Hangman's Alley, Red Rocket and I don't recall the name of the beach location... but there are settlers that are located at a shack on a beach. 3 of them. I built myself a small hut on a dock I made out in the water. So far they seem to leave it alone.

i built a really nice tower at starlight drive in for myself. must be about 8 to 10 stories high.

well, the problem is, i thought why not get some company there and get settlers there as well. so i built a fortress around my tower, with food, beds, bars, shops. everything a settler could dream of. i removed the stairs from my tower, it is only reachable via fast travel.

but here comes the problem. every time i fast travel, one or more settlers are up in my tower. working at my crafting or power armor stations, even sleeping in my bed.

i sent a few settlers from another settlement to starlight drive in and thought at first, well, this maybe the problem. so i sent everyone in my tower away. but sadly this didnt help... every other time i fast travel, settlers are in my tower...

anyone know if there is a way to change that? i keep thinking of removing the fortress and settlers altogether, but it took me like 2 or 3 hours to built that thing and i very much like the place...

here is a picture of the thing. http://imgur.com/390SMOC
