Looking for tipstutorials on 3D texturing with Blender 2.49b

I've just learned how to do a Bump Map, but it seems to only be useful for 2D texturing. If I'm incorrect on that assumption, please correct me.

I've recently finished modeling a weapon for Oblivion (a staff), and I've been stuck on where to start with the texturing of it. I'm overtired, and I'm determined to at least get started on the last part of this thing before I close my eyes for any amount of time, so I'd greatly appreciate any help on the subject. Thanks.
