Looking for Underrated Mods

Post » Mon Aug 09, 2010 5:39 am

Hey,

I've just recently(ish) started playing with lots of mods - I'm now up to about 150 (not including new models / retextures), with no errors. To find these mods, I've just been working my way through the "Top Rated" mods on PES (I got as far as page 14 or so). However, I'm in no doubt that I've missed a lot of great mods, because not all of them are popular / well-known / on PES.

So, basically I'm looking for good quality mods that I might have missed. Feel free to suggest ones that you've made, but be warned, I'm a very harsh judge!

My favourite kinds of mods are usually:
  • Fairly simple, decorative ones (i.e. "Hold It", "Meteors", "Dogs of Morrowind")
  • Bugfixes, balancing mods and things that "should have been in Morrowind from the beginning" (i.e. "Texture Fix", "Correct UV Rocks", "All Silt Striders", "Hospitality Papers")
  • Collectibles (i.e. "Morrowind Trading Cards", "Morrowind Toy Shoppe", "The Uber Crystal Egg Hunt")
  • Generally new / clever / interesting concepts (i.e. "Scripted Spells", "Dwemer Playtime Counter", "Hunters Achievements", "Fast Break")

Maybe you can post a list of your mods, so this thread doesnt fill up with things you already have?

Does the newer version (3.0) include the chalk quests? I had always stuck with 2.0 because I enjoyed having those little loose ends in the game.

Perhaps you'd be interested in a couple of my currently-under-construction mods?

Advanced Enemy Encounters: Basically I'm tooling around with the numbers in the Leveled Creatures list so that the player encounters the more advanced enemies sooner in their progress than normal. I'm also thinking of altering stats of most creatures, making them generally a bit more dangerous, most particularly ones like the Dreugh and Snow Bears/Wolves. Might increase the number of spawning points for some of them as well.

Vanilla Weapons Reconfiguration: Alters stats of all weapons that come with the game, generally lowering their damage and reconfiguring the "pecking order" they go in, based on what makes sense to me. For example, Stendarr's Hammer will become usable, albeit very difficult to acquire, and the most damaging weapon in the vanilla game, however less uber that will end up being in the overall scheme of things, especially when combined with the mod above. I'll also be adding in the Wings of the Queen of Bats axe, probably to some dungeon that doesn't otherwise get much action.

Vanilla-Based Weapons Addition Pack: Taking what's already available and making copies of just about every non-unique weapon, significantly altering the stats and adding enchantments not often found, if at all, in the vanilla game, and adding them to the leveled lists. For example, the player comes across a Golden Saint in the Grazelands wielding a Chitin Spear of Hatred with 700 condition and a CE Damage Personality & Fortify Strength enchantment.

Everybody's Rich... But Not: Basically this is a reconfiguration of the overall economy in Morrowind. Can't say too much of what I'm going to do just yet, but essentially the goal, in combination with the above mods, is to create an experience where the player (with a new character preferably) is able to become substantially wealthy, but it won't likely happen by accident, or from the same old tactics. This mod will be the last of these that I finish, because although it won't require me learning to do new things in the CS, it will take a lot more planning and testing, as balancing mods usually do.

Looking back through your list again I see some potential conflicts, but perhaps you'd be open to turning some of them off for a new character? Also, be warned that BTB might've already pwned me in terms of these types of mods, however absent his mods may be from your list. :P

EDIT: Big thumbs up to that Chalk mod. I'm going to have soooo much fun with that. :)

**I've made another mod with things to collect. It adds about 70 paintings made from Landscape screeshots.
The mod is called http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7573. Unlike MTC, getting the paintings does nothing but give you a painting for your house(s).
The paintings are usually for sale in the town they represent so you'll need to travel quite a bit to get the whole collection.

**Also, you might like to look at the beta of http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1099364-wipbeta-a-bards-life/. it's a beta because I want to add new features before releasing it for good.
In this mod, you need to collect lutes and music sheets either via mini-quests, exploring or fighting. Each music sheet allows you to play a tune AND cast a spell. The better the lute, the stronger the spell.

This was my first public released mod, and it got some not so good reviews because of some nasty GMST that have been since removed.

Don't mean to steer the topic in a bad direction, but I'm sure I'm not alone in this:

Is it really too much to ask for modders to put up screenshots of what their mod does when it's applicable? Of all the things you have to do with mods, the easiest thing possible is to fire up the game and hit the "Prt Sc" button. There's a lot of mods I'd be giving a fair shot if the people who put them up just had some damn screens.

Sorry, it just really irks me. :P

I agree (when it makes sense, don't need one for a sound replacer) but in the case of mods hosted at Planet Elder Scrolls I think there was some kind of site update or something else years ago that made most of the older mods before that lose their screenshots. So those are excused. :P

I didn't see better bodies or better clothes in your list - do you play vanilla or have you set those up as esp less?

Was checking for a levelling mod and didn't see one either - in which case you might enjoy seeing different screens using the original concept art when you http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8213 no esp required :)

You might also try my http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7566 mod.

ManaUser also has a list of pretty neat mods at http://webpages.charter.net/manauser/morrowind/. Pay special attention to the Graphic Herbalism Mod, which is how the game should have been from the start IMO.

There is also a mod called "http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3930" by IllTempered (thanks Kiteflyer61 for the link). This mod lets you "play" a lute and wield it as a weapon.

The mod is worth it just for the music alone, and is fun besides.

Oh, I didn't know that. That's okay then, since I don't exactly expect someone who made a mod two years ago to keep that close of an eye on it, especially if they don't even play the game any more.

Wow, so many suggestions! Thanks a lot guys, it's gonna take me a while to work my way through all these ;)
I can't reply to everything but just a few things that stand out...

Vivec Open Air Plazas Beta 0.6

This looks very nice! Here's hoping it won't conflict with any other mods... and is it compatible with Vivec Expanded?

[All Magicka Regen mods and levelling mods]

I have "Fair Magicka Regen" but I don't think it works with my existing character... I might look into this actually.
I think if I start a new game, I'll try using GCD.

Perhaps you'd be interested in a couple of my currently-under-construction mods?

Hmm... sounds like you're basically reworking the whole game! This definitely interests me - I've seen various other mods that do similar things (like various economy adjusters), but I've always held back from downloading them for fear of conflicts. However, I am willing to give some mods of this nature a try :)

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=640.

I use The Lighting Mod, but maybe I'll consider using this next game - it sounds good! :)

http://www.lgnpc.org/.

I downloaded this a while ago but was scared off by all the different plugins that came with it! I was also a bit worried about mod conflicts.

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=62.

Hmm... I kinda liked that the signs were in some kind of Morrowind-ian language before
In fact, what language are they in? I always assumed that this mod wasn't particularly lore-correct... but perhaps I'll try it out, I'll probably like it.

http://mods.jo-ge.net/mw/. Home of Halendshore and Havish, two great new cities with plenty of interesting shops and quests (including a thieves guild you build up, yourself). Also Booty Island, which is just plain fun.

Do you know if Halendshore and Havish conflict with TR, my "moved" Wizards' Islands, or Siege at Firemoth? There are so many conflicting landmasses out there I'm always a little put off, but I'd love it if they all worked together.

I'll definitely check out some of your other suggestions, thanks.

**I've made another mod with things to collect. It adds about 70 paintings made from Landscape screeshots.

You have a good memory ;)
Great suggestions, thanks!

This was my first public released mod, and it got some not so good reviews because of some nasty GMST that have been since removed.

I like the idea of claiming lots! It's always a shame when mods get bad reviews, and are then overlooked (thus this thread)... Whether or not this mod deserves some more attention - well, I'll find out! :D

I agree in a lot of cases where new content is added, it really helps to have some screenshots, but also, there are times when they're not so necessary. Nonetheless, since a lot of people seem to have an attitude of "no screens, no download", I make a point of always uploading screenshots for a mod, no matter how small.

I don't use Better Bodies or Better Clothes. Thinking about it now, I don't really know why... I think just because a lot of clothes / armour will conflict by default, and I don't like the idea of having to specifically look for "Better Bodies" versions of everything. But then on the flipside, a lot of mods require Better Bodies. Oh, also, I really don't like Better Heads, because I've been playing for so long with vanilla heads that I feel I've "gotten to know" everyone, and having new heads would just feel wrong to me :/
But I do use your level-up screens ;)

Here you go:

VERY nice suggestions, thanks! I've actually downloaded Graphic Herbalism already, I just need to get around to installing it (which will be a bit of a pain as I'm already using a herbalism mod :s)

Abot Silt Striders. Pretty frigging amazing. You get to ride on animated silt striders instead of just zapping there. You also see the creatures traveling on their routes occasionally.

Hehe, I've been watching this mod climb the ranks at an incredible rate! I guess I haven't DL'd yet because I figure I'll get bored of waiting to reach my destination :P
Certainly when I get a new laptop I'll download this mod, as the scenery will look much nicer ;)

You can also see them in the wild with http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=2559. It's really cool to be walking along and see one just wandering about.

I like that idea, thanks!

Wow, thanks, these look really interesting! I was really close to getting that "Ships of the Imperial Navy" but I thought it might conflict with Dagon Fel Mill... does anyone know about this? However, I found a lot of problems with Dagon Fel Mill anyway, so maybe I'll replace it.

THANK YOU! :D

I downloaded this (LGNPC) a while ago but was scared off by all the different plugins that came with it! I was also a bit worried about mod conflicts.

Don't be. Very few conflicts with other mods. You can do a search on threads with LGNPC if their titles in this forum to see what's come up.

Do you know if Halendshore and Havish conflict with TR, my "moved" Wizards' Islands, or Siege at Firemoth? There are so many conflicting landmasses out there I'm always a little put off, but I'd love it if they all worked together.

http://fessicsfavorites.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/map-o-mods.jpg should be a help. :) Haldenshore conflicts with nothing.

I started adding some LGNPC plugins to my loadlist not so long ago. So far I can say they are very impressive.
But if you're overwhelmed by the amount of ESPs, I would advice asking yourself "Which town do I spend the less time in?".
Then, check if that particular town plugin conflicts with anything and try it. You don't need to install it all at once.
Personally, I chose Pelagiad and Khuul as my first LGNPC mods, because I almost never stayed more than a few seconds in those towns each visit.

As for conflicts, I think you'll be surprised at how little they clash with other mods, even with their massive scope.
