How does one look at stats without picking an object up? Is it even possible? Looked for an option but found nothing.

Use the Transfer function. This will allow you to browse the inventory of the person or thing you are looting, without taking it into your inventory.

Unfortunately, if it is not in some sort of inventory, you will need to pick up the item to see it's information.
