Looking to tryout playing Oblivion againneed help finding mo

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 3:25 am

(Internet is acting up so I'm rushing this post so...warning bad Grammar/punctuation ahead )

Like the title says I’m looking to try playing Oblivion again (Now that steam is having a sale) the first time I played it was on the Xbox but I could never get into the game and gave up after playing it on and off. (after playing skyrim and loving it yeah I’m one of those players)Soo… With your suggestions for mods I’m hoping to change that.

First set of mods I’m looking for are combat mods (including Magic/melee/archery etc) I don’t know if it was the combat that turned me off from the game last time but I’m looking to change that if it was.

Unnecessary Violence II
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40310

Deadly Reflex
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273

These are two combat mods I found so far but so far I’m unsure which one to choose so if anyone can help me out (remembering that I’m essentially an Oblivion noob that loves skyrim lol) and hoping to find other mods that would be compatible with one of these for magic/archery

I’m also looking for a mod to improve leveling /xp system

So far I found
Oblivion XP
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15619

should I stick with this one or does anyone have any better suggestions?

Next I’m looking for a mod that makes the caves/dungeons more unique but doesn’t require any HD/enhanced texture mods (I’m fine with how the games graphics are)

So when I’m exploring I don’t feel like I been to the same place over and over again

So … yeah that’s all I can think of but if you have any other kinds of mods you think I might enjoy please tell me

Anyway thanks all

Have you considered Duke Patrick's Combat Melee No Recoil? You get bonuses for attacking your foe on their flank or by jumping and swinging midair, and combined with a sprint mod you will get a speed bonus. This swings combat around so that it smiles on really aggressive melee fighting, circling to the flanks, or faking the enemy. It's deadly to them but also to you, so battles are over after several nasty hits instead of the tedious job they are at higher levels of vanilla.

I cannot recommend OblivionXP enough. I could not imagine playing the game without it. Just bump up the number of Skillpoints per level a tad. 48 is a tad too stingy (I prefer ~80).

Make sure you grab one of the Darnified UI's to go with it (I prefer DarkUI Darn, but regular Darn is fine too, I guess).

Can't speak for the combat mods.

Edit: Oh, and the most recent version of OblivionXP is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35333, so get that version instead.

I agree with Nephnee13. If you want to play a good old rpg, Oblivion XP is way to go. There are other level scaling out there such as Realistic Leveling http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13879 if you prefer to stick with vanilla. Go either with DR6 or UVII. Both mods give you better attack animations, gore, blood, etc etc. Or if you just want better attack animations check these out http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16459 or here http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34525,

Check out the search categories Dungeons: Vanilla and Dungeons: New at TES Nexus. Some of the latter do include new graphics, but you can decide best what you want.

I haven't gotten a chance yet to explore all of the caves, but from what I can see so far, Better Dungeons (http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40392) is awesome (although the name is misleading... it's just better caves - nothing else).

Unnecessary Violence and Deadly Reflex are actually compatible, although I wouldn't recommend installing both to someone who is new to modding.

Duke Patrick's Combat Melee No Recoil is a great alternative, as Nenina suggested, and there's also Duke Patrick's Combat Archery which makes bows a lot better.

For magic overhauls, I suggest LAME or Supreme Magicka. Both are available on Tesnexus. There is also a Magic overhaul comparison thread kicking around on this forum somewhere.

(Ugh this post took me for ever the wifi hates me)

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the suggestions once I get back home I’ll be looking at the links more closely. Also thanks nenina/ Snargelfargen for pointing out Duke Patrick's Combat mods (should be easier for a modnoob like me to set up since its made by the same guy lol)

As for the Better Dungeons mod (thanks Cryonaut) does anyone know any good mods that could go along with it (and not conflict with the mod) and make the actual “dungeons unique as well?

Anyway thanks again guys hope everyone is having a happy holiday.

PS: I’m also looking to make the roads/world feel more lively (loved running into random npcs in skyrim so I want to try and get that here) but I want to make sure the npcs don’t just stomp me while I’m a noob

So far I found
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20575

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18251

I know they are pretty much the same mod with different tweaks but what would every one suggest?

I've tried those, but the best I've encountered so far is Tamriel Travelers. Lots of configurability on this one, so you can decide whether traveling merchants are attacked by bandits that attack your party, whether they sell SI goods, etc. From the long description:

Roaming Traders - Imperial, Orc, Nord, Redguard - Sell/Use Heavy Armor, Sell/Use Any Type Weapon. No Spells, No Alchemy Equipment, No clothing - Can Repair Equipment

Roaming Archers - Wood Elf only - Poisons, Magic Arrows Only, Light Armor and Bows Only. No Books, No Clothing, No Alchemy Equipment, Can Repair Equipment

Roaming Wizard - Breton and High Elf - Books, Potions, Alchemy Equipment, Clothing & Jewelry Magic/ Normal, Staffs and Spells (only), Soul Gems, and Can Recharge Equipment. No Armor, No Lights, - Wizard Now have Impling

Roaming Rogue - Dark Elf Only - Poisons, Alchemy Equipment, LockPicks Only, Light Armor and Blade Weapons Only, Soul Gems and Can Buy stolen goods only. No Books, No Clothing, No Lights - The Rouges do not have backup and do not report crimes!!!

Roaming Bard - Imperials - Clothing and Jewelry Magic/Normal, Potions, Scrolls, Books, can Recharge Equipment - No Armor, No Lights, No Alchemy - Has Spells but does not sell them.

Bard Guard will accompany the bards around!!!

Pets - Gaurs, Implings , Guard Dogs , will follow their master around!!! Will track owner down if lost ...including Horses..expect in town's.

Thanks for the suggestions again guys. Well I started to mod today it was going well ... Until I tried my noob hand at installing MMM (So right now I'm dealing with it crashing to desktop after the Bethesda logo ;/) atm I'm just searching google for a fix if anyone can link me to one I would appreciate it lol.

I decided to "nuke the problem from orbit" (delete everything/unistall/reinstall) I'll avoid this mod for now I'm to much of a noob for this mod lol.

No, no, MMM is actually not complicated to install. It has got many options, but the required core is very easy to get right. Try it for vanilla game first. From the official thread:

Quick Install Guide for MMM 3.7b3

NOTE: The MMM.bsa must be renamed appropriately depending on which mods that are used. See below for details.

1. Extract MMM.bsa to your Oblivion/Data directory
2. Select Mart's Monster Mod.esm [If using OOO, also select Mart's Monster Mod for OOO.esm]
3. Select ONE of the following:
For vanilla:
Mart's Monster Mod.esp - Rename MMM.bsa to Mart's Monster Mod.bsa
You probably did not rename the BSA file correctly (I highlighted it in yellow), hence the severe crash on startup.
So remember: for your basic MMM install for vanilla game you need only 3 files, all 3 to dump into OB/Data/ folder:
- the BSA, renamed correctly as per above. You must do that manually.
- the .esm file
- for vanilla, the Mart's Monster Mod.esp file. Finished!

Install it like this, play-test some and see if it's working and install any optional files only thereafter. Really not difficult. Read the MMM readme. It's long but the various options are quite well explained.

TommyH is correct. MMM has a very straightforward installation. It is also compatible with nearly every mod out there, and really enhances the experience of traveling by foot.

Return to IV - Oblivion
