Looks like the goofy AI is back

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:17 am

From the shadows, we draw back our bow and fire, taking out the man. “I know I heard something,” says the woman as the man collapses, in one of the demo’s less than on point moments.

Sounds similar to Oblivion's AI, where you killed one bandit in mid-conversation, and the other one went "Damn rats"'. Pretty disappointing, TBH.

I thought that too when I read this. I hope it's not exactly like Oblivion...

Or simply the player kills the bandit as they notice him to avoid getting engaged? They wouldn't show such a failure in a demo. No, they wouldn't. Do you seriously believe no reviewer would have noticed and stated it? Honestly?

edit: in other words this is senseless paranoia. He killed him after the bandit spoke. Obviously.

But in another interview, she said "I know I heard someone" and she was looking for the person and she found them but it was too late and she got shot down. Here is the http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/18/dragonborn-again-bethesda-shows-skyrim-in-utah/

There was another one that specifically talked about the shooting down one of them and the other noticing, give me a sec to find it also.

Eh... sounds to me like sneak-stupid AI is back again at least... so thankful for the Fresh Kills Alert NPCs, Combat Archery (near miss), and Sneak Detection Recalibrated mods for OB. I had, obviously misplaced, high hopes that they would overhaul the way this works to make it more satisfying and believable, but it sounds same-ol' same-ol' to me. Rats.

Was it said if the NPCs saw the other NPC go down, or did they just hear a noise?

Maybe you should write an article on what you saw at the demo.

The game is still many months away from release; they may do something about that yet.

I think it's a possibility G4 may have the chronological events out of order. One of the earlier articles that I read gave me the impression that the female NPC heard the noise of the arrow being shot. Keep in mind, she likely made this statement before her companion was actually shot and killed. In other words, I think the dialogue came at an awkward moment and may have confused the viewers. When he was killed, she almost instantaneously went looking for the culprit to exact revenge.

I would assume this type of AI behaviour would still be demonstrated in Skyrim. It was the same way in Fallout 3/NV as well.

Can't say I'm surprised since the same exact thing happened with Oblivion. Remember the "Radian AI" they boasted about so much.........and remember how pathetic it turned out to be?

Don't get your hopes up too high is all I'm saying. Any "improvements" made over Oblivion's AI are bound to be minimal at best.

Yep there was another article that pretty much said the same thing, can't remember exactly which one since I read like 10 of them...Once he kills the first bandit the 2nd one realizes and comes after the player.

In another interview the same situation was describe as an improvement, that the npcs actually became alerted when their partner was killed. I don't know who to believe. I really hope that npcs notice dead bodies. It was so absurd in past games when you killed someone and the people around them do nothing or very briefly become alerted, then do nothing.

i interpreted it as this. As the bandit was coming at you she said i knew i heard something as in she heard something before but didn't say anything but when her friend was killed she noticed you and said that as she gets ready to attack. i Didn't interpret it as... i think i heard something, oh well my buddies dead must have been the wind. continues the way she was before.

I just read the actual reviews. It's quite clear. Pure text comprehension. Try it.

I took it as an example of the 'alert mode' we've heard about. She knew someone killed him, but she didn't know who or where. So of course, she looked around, found the player, and attacked him. Or was I the only one who got that from the story?

Hm that's surprising considering that Fallout 3's AI had the enemy search the area if it heard movement. I'd be dumbfounded if that's not transfered over to Skyrim.

"Inside the temple, we encountered two of the thieves who had robbed the Riverwood shopkeeper. We weren't sure what they were discussing, but it mattered little after we blew one of them away with a headshot from our longbow. The second jumped to her feet and began frantically searching for our hiding spot in the shadows. Stealth in Skyrim has been tweaked from previous games so that the transition from the alert state of enemies (where they are looking for you) to their danger state (where they are attacking you) is more gradual depending on what you do. For instance, if our character were to run out in the open and attack, the transition would occur very quickly. However, if we remained hidden, it would be a much slower process. The transition itself was represented by an opening-eye icon in the center of the screen."

This is from Gamespot.

I don't think thats the issue, its the reaction or non reaction to someone getting killed right next to the npc. Do they notice there friends getting killed or react to there dead bodys if the killing was done when they were out of sight and they came back in the area.
