LOOT

A plugin load order optimiser for TES IV: Oblivion, TES V: Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Introduction

Setting the right load order for your mods is a crucial step to enjoying a stable modded game. The Load Order Optimisation Tool (LOOT) can help with that, by providing automated load order sorting that's simple to use and fully customisable.

While sorting, LOOT checks for load order errors such as incompatibilities and missing requirements, and notifies you of any issues that it detects. It also provides thousands of plugin-specific messages such as usage notes and bug warnings, to help keep your game healthy.

Downloads

LOOT can be downloaded from its http://loot.github.io/.

It was recently suggested to me that LOOT could automatically run as admin, to save users who don't know to work around UAC the trouble of figuring out why LOOT isn't working properly. I've noted my objections https://github.com/loot/loot/issues/370, but I'd value others' opinions on this.

personally I don't see mod name as important for loading order decision
Why complicated? sort also by mod name, or don't, it is simple as this and adding a on(off user switch.
good to know in this thread
Thanks, my bad, did not read the readme with due attention. As a suggestion, putting them back to a separate column instead of under the mod name would make them easily sortable by priority with a column header click.

My general impression with the interface so far is: give user a way to still personalize loading order, but discourage it as possible

You could tell people to run LOOT with adminrights on the getting started page that fires up on first start. At least now I know why it didn′t find Skyrim (oddly enough though, it did find FO3). Updating the masterlist and then sorting my plugins worked fine though. Good job there. Thumbs up!

And yet many people do, because I got a lot of complaints about LOOT not doing so. The change was made as a direct response to significant user feedback.

Oh, that's what you mean. Well, I could do that, but leaving part of the sorting operation undefined is a bad idea, because then you can't tell why it's done what it has done, whether it will do that again, etc.

That would then cut off longer plugin names even sooner, and some plugins don't differ in name apart from the last bit. Already it's a problem for some in my test set, and I'd rather not aggravate the situation.

You can't have your cake and eat it: I think v0.7 is easier to customise with than v0.6 (multiple editors at once, drag 'n' drop without a conflict filter, filters available during editing), but I have to strike a balance between basic usability and customisability. An interface optimised for editing is not the same as an interface optimised for basic usage.

Alright.
---

Another thought I have since a couple of days. When I'm looking at the opened editor of a plugin in the right pane, I kind of think .. while the color http://www.color-hex.com/color/e8eaf6 of the head area looks good and fulfills it's purpose to visually seperate the to-be-edited plugin from the plugin right above it .. there could be something to further visually seperate the plugin-with-an-open-editor from the plugin right below it. I sometimes think, that it can be a bit hard to make out the difference between the opened editor and the plugin below it.

So I was thinking about, with which suggestions I possibly could come up with .. and I couldn't quite put my finger on it until now. First I thought that adding a brighter version of the color #E8EAF6 to the lower part of the editor would make a significant change, but that wasn't it either (http://abload.de/img/untitled_1b5ski.png - http://abload.de/img/untitled_2azssj.png).

After I read through issue https://github.com/loot/loot/issues/375, I got a new idea. The plugin card's conflict filter outline looks normally like http://abload.de/img/loot1nbuk8.jpg. If I use/activate both "Show Only Conflicts" and "Edit Metadata" at the same time, it looks like http://abload.de/img/loot2wkubg.jpg. That actually, looks quite nice, it visually seperates the opened editor effectively from both the plugins above and below it.

But simly using that color not only for "Show Only Conflicts", but also for "Edit Metadata" seems out of the question .. you probably would like to distinguish the currently used functionality by the color of the outline, which would be hard if in both cases that blue color is used.

So I created these two variants - http://abload.de/img/loot3vou7a.jpg and http://abload.de/img/loot4hjufp.jpg - for a possible outline for the editor.

The only question would be .. in case that a seperate outline would be defined for the editor .. which outline color would be displayed, if then both "Show Only Conflicts" and "Edit Metadata" would be activated/used?

What do you think of this wrinkly? I'm not saying that this is a must-have .. but I kinda wanted to have this off my chest.

What about having the header colour extend as a border to the tab content, https://www.dropbox.com/s/qv01pp4ynqx31si/Screenshot%20%2860%29.png?dl=0? That adds the same amount of colour to the bottom of the card without needing a separate outline.

EDIT: If you went with a darker colour because the light indigo is not strong enough to differentiate, the editor could use a https://www.dropbox.com/s/oiwn8asmbl8a87b/Screenshot%20%2861%29.png?dl=0.

Why not? You can if you just want. Use a little smaller font (it is way bigger than usual Windows font now) and/or less fancy icons and you have room for a couple columns and/or wider mod name.
Add a user toggleable alpha sort on/off setting, sort (or not) by alphabetic order first, then sort by whatever topologic criteria after, done.

I'm having trouble visualising what it is you want for the UI: could you make a mock-up?

The UI generally follows the specifications of people a lot better at UI design than I am, though I have made a few changes to increase information density already. I like the current font size (it's only 1pt bigger than Windows' usual), it means I can read text without having to squint, and I find that the icons are an efficient way of presenting simple information.

As for adding a toggle for the alphabetical sorting critera: no. I've explained my reasoning, and unless you've got compelling counter-arguments for why LOOT shouldn't do so, further insistence is is going to get you nowhere.
