[Spoilers] Looting Urshilaku Burial

Post » Sat May 17, 2014 1:10 pm

A little introduction, feel free to skip.

Spoiler

I'm playing a Dunmer Nerevarine. Picked the default Knight class. For the most part I am following the main quest. So right off Seyda Neen, headed straight to Balmora. Met Caius, said no first because I didn't like the idea of being someone's [censored] but came back and agreed after giving it some thought. As per Caius' suggestion, I tried to establish a cover identity on Vvardenfell so naturally the first choice would be the Fighter's Guild. Did some jobs for Eydis, some free-roaming to improve my skills and also got help from all of the Blades Trainers in Balmora. Nine-Toes was of huge help because he gave me moon sugar to sell to Ra'Virr which totally kick-started my funding.

Finally took my first orders from Caius at level 3 and after being on Vvardenfell for 20 days. Over the course of the next 187 in-game days (about 40 hours of real-life) I've following the main quest closely and doing everything Caius suggests me to, while keeping my cover identity up to date. Eventually joined House Redoran and the Mages Guild too.

Somewhere in that time I've managed to find cheap glass daggers which I fixed myself and sold to Creeper for a huge Septim boost which would help fund my training because if I were to really become the Nerevarine, I'd need to be physically and mentally strong (hence why I joined the Mages Guild; eventually I'd need to learn magic and especially strengthen my Willpower as my foes are getting more and more dangerous with their magic).

So I was at the point where I had to retrieve the enchanted bow from Urshilaku Burial. Now for the most part, I feel that I'm doing a good job with the role-playing. As a Knight, he obviously only does good things, tries to help people who are in trouble (finding a LOT of those by the roadsides in Vvardenfell!) and tries to make an honest living. Does NOT loot Ancestrial Tombs (except for that skull that he had to retrieve for that female Orc to advance the main quest... regretably). Also trying to earn money as legitly as possible (with the exception of the moon sugar from Nine-Toes but I guess it was a necessary evil, being the Empire's agent and all... sometimes it's unavoidable to get my hands dirty. I'm sure even good ol' Caius has his dark secrets).

About the only questionable thing about my character is his dealings with Creeper. I'm RP'ing it this way: Creeper initially offered to pay me good money for any weapons I could find, hence the broken glass daggers (among various other random gear I've found as a result from minor quest rewards). I didn't find and sell all the daggers in 1 go BTW, took me about 2 in-game months to find and sell them all.

The more I did business with Creeper, and as conditions worsen in Vvardenfell (sleepless nights, weird dreams, being mocked/attacked by crazy cultists, exposure to the Blight etc)... I think I am being corrupted by the amount of money I am making off this strange merchant. I know that I need a lot of money for training to strengthen myself so that I may eventually defeat Dagoth Ur and make things right on Vvardenfell again... or is it? What if I'm really just obsessed with being powerful?

Then one day, while trying to offload some stuff, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Barbas. It's... almost like he's communicating with me telepathically, messing with my head. He's heard that I am to go to Urshilaku Burial to find an enchanted bow. He tells me of powerful artifacts left in there and promises me many riches if I could retrieve them all for him.

As a Knight, I feel it is wrong to remove those ancient relics from those burial grounds (I have so far managed to avoid looting completely in any of the Ancestral Tombs I've been in) but... to cut a long story short: in the end, with the help of the several Standard Rising Force Potions I've scoured through my adventures, I came out from the burial with not only just the bow that Sul-Matuul wanted; but Magebane, some expensive Glass gear, a couple of enchanted Demon helmets, an Ebony helmet and a couple of Daedric darts. Oh and several powerful scrolls from the various urns found in the burial.

In other words, I picked the place clean. :o

I sold the Daedric darts to the Creeper but much to his disappointment, I ran away with the other stuff. I have them stashed somewhere in a secret spot and now I don't know what to do with all this expensive equipment.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

So what do you think? The truth is, I might have just failed to resist the urge to powergame by making huge amounts of money from the broken glass daggers and looting the burials and I'm trying to come up with an RP-friendly justification of it. :D I'm also unsure where to continue from here. I really want this character to end up being a good Nerevarine but I feel that by making him loot Urshilaku, he's already broken his own code. What are the possibilities of redemption? Will he return the items back to the burial or would he be further corrupted by the lust for money and power (training) and if he does that, is there any chance of him snapping out of it, regret what he's done and going back to being good again?

As a rule, I don't deal with Creeper or the Mudcrab and I never steal something or kill an NPC unless it is a quest goal. Playing an admirable character takes some determination. I don't need a lot of money, since I improve my skills by actually using them and I enchant my own items. Collecting treasure really isn't a priority. However, you could always go into a location full of Daedra, trap their souls/slay them, loot/dispose of their corpses and then exit the location. When you re-enter, the Daedra will have spawned and you can repeat this as needed. At the entrance to one of my character's stronghold, I spelled out her name on the ground with Deadric weapons.;)

You could have your Knight return the stolen loot, replacing any sold items with something of like value. You could bring new offerings you acquire from time to time as pennance. The Creeper is just a Daedric agent of avarice, so stop using him. Either you are a knight with integrity or you are not a knight.

Integrity... that's the word. A very strong word which right now my character doesn't have. :'( I will have to return all of those ill-gotten items and tell Creeper that it's over.

EDIT: What about magical artifacts that are found lying around in the world? The Fists of Randagulf found inside the Sixth House Base for example. They were just lying around there on the ground. Would it be wrong for a knight to take those gauntlets and use it for himself?

In the mechanic of the game, if you pick something up out in the wild and no one screams for the police, then it is not technically stealing. I suppose in this specific case the Fists may have belonged to one of the Dreamers. Since you can't save the owner and return the Fists, then leaving them would make them available to some evil creature. I usually enchant my own gear and then I don't have to worry about the moral issue of ownership.

Perhaps storing it in Urshilaku Burial would be a good thing.;)

Use the gift giving mod and give it to people who need the items more than you

If it's on a dead body (caveat: that I didn't kill myself) I leave it alone in respect for the dead. If it's just lying around...guess I was meant to have it, huh?

You are the Nerevarine. You can decide what to do.

And you have decided there is a war threatening every single Ashlander's life, unless they defend themselves, that is. Therefore, the weapons the ancestors held for the future are needed right now.

So you go to the Burial, take them out, give them to the Urshilaku (drop them in the Ashkan's tent or something?) and claim one of the weapons for yourself, say, Magebane. You'll give it back after you've used it against Dagoth Ur, but this one you should drop back at the Burial, since it's a super sacred weapon.

PS: if you use the gift mod, will they use the weapon you give them? That would help with this, as you can actually see the Ashlanders use the weapons.

There's an idea, I guess.

NPC's will always equip whatever you give them as long as it is worth more than what they are currently using or wearing.

The only exceptions I have found is giving armor to someone with high unarmored.. Better to give them magic clothes then.

They will not equip armor if their unarmored skill is higher than the armored one.

Simple, take the swag and drop it at the Ashlander camp. It was their ancestor's stuff, so your just returning it to their descendants.

The Dunmer have a greeting "wealth beyond measure, outlander". It's like they want me to take their offerings, so I do. Probably would think differently about it if I played as a Dunmer though.
