Already got my copy pre-ordered on Amazon, too. Keyes is one of the better writers working today, and I wasn't disappointed with the first novel one scintilla.
Hmmm I liked the first one but..
It was not great, and certainly not that great as to take that long to knock out another one.
The main reason for the almost-two-year-long gap between books is largely because J. Gregory Keyes also has his own original fiction to concentrate upon; the occasional shared-universe tie-in series is something that he does only occasionally, and only when he feels absolutely passionate about the material. The second novel will be arriving just in time to tie into the upcoming game release, in November.
I just love the titles. "Lord of Souls." Seriously, cranked out of a machine in some gygaxian publishing house.
Next up: Epic Legends of the Magic Sword Kings.
I like the titles from actual Elderscrolls books, like, Mixed Infantry Tactics; Vol III, or A Brief History of the Empire, The 36 Lessons of Vivec. Okay, so maybe the Mixed Infantry Tactics is a little dry, but something not as overblown as "Lord of Souls."
Keep in mind too that these novels are also being written with the notion of attracting non-gamers in mind -- someone who's never even played an
Elder Scrolls game before, who sees it on the bookstore shelf, and is "grabbed" by either the title, the author's reputation, and/or second-hand knowledge of the actual game franchise proper.
In which case, a title like "Lord of Souls" is just the thing to hook and reel them in.
Alduin had no mention in the first book at least. But generally new Ages in TES start with big events. The fall of the Septims and destruction of Morrowind seems a fitting way to go about it.
Very likely, for the first book, Keyes was given information concerning the Titus Mede ascension, the fracturing of the Empire, and stuff like the destruction of Morrowind, but at that point TES V itself was still in the design stages, and the Alduin-stuff not yet relevant to that particular novel.
The next one, though? Perhaps.
