Lord of the Rings Online

Post » Mon Aug 02, 2010 7:28 pm

So, as many of you know Lord of the Rings Online will 'reboot' as a Free 2 Play MMO on the 10th. I loved LOTRO when it started and I'm a former subscriber so I'm definitely going to check this out but I was just wondering if anyone else had planned to try the game.

Anyway, I'm going to be playing it and if anyone wants to meet in-game, that'd be cool. Maybe we could get together enough people to have a BSF meeting in game and do group quests and stuff. ^_^

Wait, so does that mean no monthly fee but you have to buy the game, or is it all free?

It's completely free to download the game and play for as long as you like.

There are some limitations for free accounts but it's nothing major.

When a hacker got my WoW account, I looked around at other MMO's a little bit, including this one. I don't want to hijack the thread, but what's it like?

Ya this is one of the reasons why I shy away from WoW since it seems to be rampant with hacker attacks. From what i'm seeing LOTRO is interesting, but may not be for me. However with it being free I might give it a try to see what it looks like.

Been free to play for me since it was released. At any rate, for me it won't change a thing, and I welcome any able roleplayers on our servers. ^_^

They're beautiful, so be quiet. Nobody said that they are top notch in technology. ^_^

Let's see . . . .

Road through Mirkwood contains billboards

Ents will pitch popular soda brands during fast travel sequence

Saruman of Many Colors character to be renamed Skittles Taste the Rainbow?

Tom Bombadil let's everyone know that only they can prevent forest fires.

Orcs can get you a great deal on car insurance - so simply even a cave troll can do it!

Nine out of Ten Rangers prefer the Schick Quattro razor.

Gollum must have the Precious - we can buys this awards winning film today on DVD and Blu-Ray!

Kingdom of the Dúnedain has fallen, can't get back up.

I was looking at it. I am shocked you don't even pay to start with the game. I thought you would have to buy the game first. You don't. Yes I see restricitons so not shure how bad they are untill you pay. Maybe they made the game so good that you just have to pay to get the better options.

I'll definitely be trying this out when it relaunches. Very excited. I'll just try to avoid the obvious "f2p crowd" that will swarm the game for the first bit of relaunch.

I might look into this. WoW is getting a bit boring, farming heroics and leveling alts all day until Cata comes out gets old.
Does the game have classes, or are there like 100 Gandalfs and Frodos running around?

You can be a Dwarf, Elf, Human, or Hobbit

For classes: Burglar, Captain, Champion, Guardian, Hunter, Lore-Master, Mintrel, Rune-Keeper, Warden. Though certain races can't play certain classes.

Also, the Rune-Keeper class is only available if you've got the Mines of Moria expansion, which isn't included in the free package.

Asides from that, all races and classes are available to free players.

I actually rejoined a week or two ago and couldn't get into it. The game is too limited by the LoTR brand - the game feels so bland at times. The combat just isn't that great either.

I played a few days and canceled again and deleted it.

I wonder though, what free to play means for us lifetimers? Hopefully they'll give us people who bought a lifetime sub some nice benefits.

I don't think the brand is really the problem, its the execution. I got up until 36 and gave up, everything seemed same-y (oh look, bandits! oh no, now there are orcs! *5 levels later* bandits again!) and there wasn't much to do alone. The design did not impress me too much either, I found it rather generic, even (and sometimes especially) when compared to the movies. There is a lot of room in the lore, its just not being used. Moria is beautiful though.

I might get back into it for monster play (pvp), but probably won't play full-time.

Are you saying there's some sort of advertising?

Sarcasm. The actual benefits/disadvantages of being a free player are on the website.

I played for around a month but didn't really give it a chance. Now that I'll be a vip, I'll have to test it out again.

I have a lifetime sub I rarely use, but I think I'll stick to WoW. At least when I see some immature tool making a nuisance of themselves I'm not surprised or bothered. With Tolkien's world I think I would be.
