Lore behind Named Dragons

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:43 pm

Like the first dragon you have to fight outside Whiterun. It had some sort of special name. For the life of me i cant remember what it was though. Does anyone know if there is lore behind their names?

No idea myself. Its pretty cool and it gives the dragons more personality. I must have fought three or so named dragons (That were not part of the main quest).

They're actual dragons Alduin raised himself from their burials.

Remember that first dragon you had to kill with Delphine?

After that Alduin will fly around ressurecting many other named dragons, if you're lucky you might even bump into him doing that same ritual on random dragon burials.

I found Alduin doing that in the wilderness about 3 times or so.

It seems those resurrected dragons have names, but there's nothing more special in them.

The first time i saw Alduin randomly resurrecting one of those buried dragons the game glitched and it stayed as a skeleton that attaked me. Aaah, Dragon Zombies! :ahhh: (And there is one of those that doesn't require glitches too ;)).

That's not a glitch. It's what happens if you interrupt Alduin's ritual at just the right point.

I'm bored, so: going from the Atlas of Dragons plus the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_language on the wiki...

Nahagliiv: Fury/Burn/Wither
Odahviing: Snow/Hunter/Wing
Sahloknir: Phantom/Sky/Hunt
Viinturuth: (not sure on first syllable)/Hammer/Run? Doesn't map correctly onto the language guide.
Vuljotnaak: Dark/Maw/Eat
Paarthurnax: Ambition/Overlord/Cruelty

Also, now I want to name an Argonian character in dragon language. Long-lost little cousin or something. :D
edit: Or maybe when the CK is out, I'll make a little pet dragon with an appropriate name.

Paarthurnax: Ambition/Overlord/Cruelty

That's quite an intimidating name for one of the nicest dragons in the game.

Paarthurnax's name interests me.

Ambition/Overlord/Cruelty

Ambition -- He had the ambition to control his naturally violent urges, and/or believed helping the Nords would benefit him in some way.

Overlord -- He's an overlord of sorts of the Greybeards.

Cruelty -- Hmm... depending on the perspective, perhaps it can be considered cruel to try to force all dragons to surpress their instincts? Desire for fighting and war is part of being a dragon after all. In their eyes it would probably be like he's forcing them to abandon their culture.

Just my musings on what his name could mean. Alduin's is more straightforward.

I think you're overthinking this. He had a dark past. He was one of Alduin's top lieutenants. (I don't know how or when dragons receive a name, though)

Mind, the ambition-overlord part is still readily observable. After you defeat Alduin, he talks about how he wants to take Alduin's spot as the leader of dragon-kind. Sure, to lead the dragons on a 'nice path', or so he claims, but I have a feeling that this is one of the reasons he betrayed his own kind to begin with. He was jealous and spiteful of Alduin and wanted to rule the dragons himself.

Perhaps, but he still expresses displeasure of Alduin's death all the same. Either way, he's a...odd bird. I do like Wolf's interpertation on what it means though. Its not something that originally occurred to me.

Well, there's two possibilities with this:

A dragon mentioned by the Atlas is named Nahfahlaar, so that could be a updated lore-correct name. If so, it would be "Fury For ?" .This is what I assumed until I was rubbing up on my dragon language and I found this word: Fahliil

Sure, it doesn't perfectly match up to "faalil", but its close enough for me to assume that Nahfahlaar isn't Nafaalilargus. Besides, you would have thought that Nahfahlaar would have been mentioned as serving under Tiber Septim, but he wasn't.

So if this is true, then it means something like "? Elves ?"

The real challenge is Skakmat though. It doesn't even have three syllables! :shakehead:

It's even more complicated when you take that "Faal" is a dragon word, meaning "The" but we have nothing for Na (closest is Nah, meaning "Fury") and "ilargus," which hardly sounds like a dragon word at all.

I'm more than willing to bet that Nafaalilargus doesn't mean anything in the dragon language. Developer oversight, I'd imagine.

Hey! This is the lore forum! We'll search the depths of lore for an answer, and if we don't find one, then we'll speculate and monkey-truth it into Oblivion!

But yeah, I suspect you're right. I just love Redguard and I love that fight. I refuse to forget about Nafaalilargus, the first dragon I killed!
