Lore explanation for the weekday names?

Post » Sun Sep 09, 2012 2:42 pm

As you know, the weekdays of TES have different names than in the real world. For example, Saturday is called "Loredas". I'm just wondering what the origins of these names are. Do they even have an explanation or is it just a slightly changed version of the Scandinavian/Germanic names (e.g. "Fredas" seems to be related to the Scandinavian name "Fredag", and "Loredas" seems to be related to "L?rdag")

Does this have an explanation?

I dont believe the days are ever explained.

They've been there since the beginning (or at least since Daggerfall)

This is the page on the UESP: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Calendar

Other than Loredas, though, the days of the week seem to be rather directly connected to the day-names that we know. And Loredas itself seems familiar to me in a real-world setting, though I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Well, a lot of our days of the week are derived from Norse gods (Thursday = Thor's Day, Wednesday = Wodin's Day, Friday = Frigg's Day, etc etc), so since the Norse gods don't exist in Tamriel, it doesn't make sense to keep the names.

It probably works with months, as well. Lots of those are named after Roman emperors.

EDIT:

But as for a lore explanation? No idea. (Thought this was in the Skyrim forum so I gave IRL reasons). :P
