Lore Friendly Names

Post » Mon Feb 17, 2014 9:18 am

As a fan of good names in general, being opposed to xXrandomcool(lame)nameXx names, and someone who svcks at creating lore friendly names. Was wondering if anyone had some name suggestions. Both first and surnames.

You don't have to share names you are planning on using, but just throw some stuff out there.

Hopefully this thread will generate some good names for people to use, modify, or take inspiration from.

I really wish that ZOS put a random (lore) name generator for people like OP on the creator creation screen.

They are 3rd party web sites that will make lore friendly names for you like this one:

http://fantasynamegenerators.com/nord_names.php#.UwE0RfmIA68

They are many more of them on the web also, if one Google "Elder Scrolls Char Names Generator"

Tamriel Rebuilt had a great Lore friendly Name Generator.
You can see a (non-functioning) archive of it: http://archive.is/6Bmmn

But they are currently updating everything to a http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/, and so far the name generator isn't included yet, but they assure me it will be soon.

What I have done in the past, is just go to the wiki lists of all NPCs and combine names to make a new one.

Also, thanks to everyone posting resources. I didn't even think that name generators could exist.

Fantasy literature is the best place to get inspiration in my opinion. But obviously google is pretty good if you just want to find one.

This what I do for new characters. I am just not creative with original names so I look at the wiki of NPCs (usually from the corresponding game), and tweak it a bit. Then I combine it with any other name I have in mind.

I agree with those saying a name generator should be added. Sometimes I just lack the creativity to pick a name and I could never resort to things like xxXqu1cksc0peK1ngXxx(looking at you COD players).

Two other links to the latter site: Oblivion and Skyrim's NPCs-by-race pages. There'll be some generic NPCs listed ("Apprentice Conjurer", etc) along with proper names, but it should give you a decent feel for how each of the races' names are styled:

Then you would be in really deep lack of creativity. Just a second and you got a lot from real life: Michael Jackson, Maddonna, Einstein.

Also, sometimes I used baby naming sites for a word idea that I have -- "Love", or "Moon" or another word, then find a different tongue that follow the lore naming rules -- like Khajiit race spell words -- then find a cool real name that means that word in a different tongue. For Khajiits, I will select a preflex Ra' , Ma' etc and combine the two -- so my char name really does mean something not random letters, but it does sound like a lore name also -- I have found that African names do sound very Khajiit like. In the past, I have spent over 5 hours looking for a "perfect name" by that method. I know that method is not for everyone to do that, a char name generator is faster to use for a lore friendly name also.

If one could not tell by my many posts, Khajiit is my favorite races. -- lol

Argonians native names are bit hard to make up, but they "in the common tongue" version is fun to make up -- names like "Jumps On Tall Trees"

I wish they had a name filter.

I really got tired of seeing:

sixual references

Drug references

Titles

Full and/or partial sentences

Non capitalized names

Pop culture references

These aren't XBL handles guys, they're character names. Stop naming them stupid things.

Spoiler
A. Rules Related to Usernames and Guild Designations

Each user will either select a character name or allow the Service to automatically select a character name at random. Additionally, users may form "guilds" and such guilds will be required to choose a name for the guild. When you choose a character name, create a guild, or otherwise create a label that can be seen by other players using the Game or the Service, you must abide by the following guidelines as well as the rules of common decency. If Trion finds such a label to be offensive or improper, it may, in its sole and absolute discretion, change the name, remove the label, and/or suspend or terminate your use of the Service. In particular, you may not use any name:

1. Belonging to another person with the intent to impersonate that person, including without limitation a "Game Master" or any other employee or agent of Trion;
2. That incorporates vulgar language or which are otherwise offensive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
3. Subject to the rights of any other person or entity without written authorization from that person or entity;
4. That belongs to a popular culture figure, celebrity, or media personality;
5. That is, contains, or is substantially similar to a trademark or service mark, whether registered or not;
6. Belonging to any religious figure or deity;
7. Taken from Trion's Game(s);
8. Related to drugs, six, alcohol, or criminal activity;
9. Comprised of partial or complete sentence (e.g., "Getpwned", "Luvtodance", etc);
10. Comprised of gibberish (e.g., "Qwerty", "Asdfasdf", "Xyzpdq");
11. Referring to pop culture icons or personas (e.g. "McLovin", "Kyle Broflovski", "Catwoman");
12. That utilizes "Leet" or "Dudespeak" (e.g., "Roflmao", "Roxxurboxx", "Lolzumad"); or
13. That incorporates titles. For purposes of this subsection, "titles" shall include without limitation 'rank' titles (e.g., "General Chow," or “Captain Kangaroo”), monarchist or fantasy titles (e.g., "KingLoko", "LordPauleyC"), and religious titles (e.g., "ThePope," or "Reverend Run").

You may not use a misspelling or an alternative spelling to circumvent the name restrictions listed above, nor can you have a "first" and "last" name that, when combined, violate the above name restrictions. Utilizing any name option to harass or disrupt another individual, group or guild will result in disciplinary action taken with respect to the offending account(s) and may result in character deletion. Accounts which have characters deleted due to a violation of this policy are not eligible for reimbursemant privileges.

SWTOR

Spoiler
When creating a character or guild name for Star Wars: The Old Republic, it is encouraged that you select a name that reflects the theme of the game. The guidelines listed below outline the types of names that you can NOT use, and apply to both player or character names, as well as guild names.

You may not use any names that violate the General Rules. This includes the use of names that are hateful, defamatory, racist, ethnically offensive, obscene, vulgar, sixually explicit, or any other language that is offensive in nature.

You may not use names that are harassing or defamatory to other players or employees of EA, BioWare or LucasArts, e.g. EASUX, Timsretarded, and Biowaresux.

You may not use names of any EA, BioWare, or LucasArts employee or service related to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

You may not use names of copyrighted or trademarked characters, materials or products, e.g. Coca-Cola or Dr. Pepper.

You may not use names from popular culture or media, e.g. Lady Gaga or George Lucas.

You may not use names that are religiously or historically significant, e.g. Jesus, Winston Churchill.

You may not use proper names of areas within Star Wars for character names. Guild names, however, MAY use the proper names of specific areas to help promote role-playing and realm pride, e.g. Defenders of Tython or Protectors of Hutta.

You may not use proper names of non-player characters within Star Wars: The Old Republic, e.g. Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, Yoda, Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker.

You may not use names containing titles or ranks within them, e.g. General Supertrooper, Captain Tim, Darth Timmy, Knight Wakey.

You may not use names that refer to drugs or that are drug related.

You may not use names that contain an inappropriate phrase, sentence or any fragment of a sentence or Leet speak, e.g. uberhaxer, xxspeederxx, lolface, rofl, Noobwhacker, TimmyF**k, kock, fuk.

You may not use misspellings or alternative spellings of names that violate any of the above rules, e.g. Hamsolo, Yooda, DorthVader.

You may not use gibberish names when creating character, e.g. ajsdu, rifndsw, qweszs.

If you violate any part of the above Naming Policy you will either be assigned a new name, or given the option of changing the name. In addition to this, your account could incur a penalty up to and including account closure.

Most of them have certain things you're NOT allowed to use.

I've seen any and all of them in this game and it's incredibly disgusting.

Makes me glad there's no name plates. Seriously.

Always a good way of dealing with it.

I have a short list of names I tend to use in games. If one fits, great. If not, I have to go hit the name generators and hit the button until I find something to work with.

I have absolutely no idea about Dunmers, but bretons have french, gallic or celtic names mostly and Redguards seem to have arab names, so you could just look into those kinds of names.

Second this suggestion. You can see a lot of syllables are repeated in elven names. Few extra notes:

- Argonians sometimes use 'translated' names, such as Skink-In-Trees-Shade (Argonian in the Morrowind mages guild).

- Wood elves usually don't take surnames at all.

-The names and surnames of Ashlander dark elves are considerably different than those of their urban counterparts.

The problem I had with wood elves' not taking surnames part is that I was unable to get a single name to work. Period.

Every. Single. Name, I tried was taken. Even some of the random facerolled on keyboard ones.
