Lore - Setting

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 7:39 pm

So, I read up on the back story (wiki), because I wondered why the world of Fallout is filled with so many items from the 50's and why the radio is playing songs from the 40's/50's. I understand the divergence of the FO timeline compared to our world. The technology was fission/nuclear based and the transistor was never developed (wait don't radios use transistors? o.0).

However, how does that explain why the styles of music, clothing and cars never changed. The war started in 2077, that means that they kept the 1950's style for over 20 years? No other musician came along? No fashion designer? No new furniture styles were invented? I know, I know, it's a fantasy universe and don't get me wrong, I love the 40/50/60 style in the game (furniture is clearly 1960'ish LOL). I was just wondering what you all thought about this?

woops, I knew it was more than 20 years LOLOL Sheesh, math is not my thing! But yea, it's strange that in all that time, nobody grew tired of the same style of clothing, furniture, music etc. Just saying...

Also keep in mind that Bethesda over did it with the retro 1950s thing. The original Fallouts had it in the background. Fallout is what the people of the 1950s though the future would be like, only nuked to hell. Yet after the Great War of 2077, people moved on in many ways. They formed their own fashion styles. There were still 1950s like mobster characters in New Reno, but for the most part people no longer cared about pre-war fashion and culture.

People progressed and rebuilt and formed new cultures and new sociaties, that became Nations like NCR. Fallout 3 had none of that. Just people sitting in radioactive holes in the ground for 200 years doing nothing. Still thinking it was 2077.

Oh ok Styles, I'll keep that in mind. I mean I love the game, I love listening to GNR and the amazing sound of the 40's/50's. I was just wondering about why people wouldn't change anything in all those years, before the war that is. :)

We don't realy know why the culture didn't change. Our timeline is the same as the Fallout timeline right up to sometime in or just after the 1950s. Something caused a split, we don't know what.

Fallout was inspired by http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/ and the game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_(video_game) Given the nature of GURPS, I don't think we are really meant to think to hard about the cause of the timeline split. I really don't want to know and hope we never fined out.

Cool, yea, I'm not too worried about finding out why the time line split. I do accept the Fallout world "as is" lol I guess it's just my inquisitive nature and my imagination that's running away with me. Or it's hard to imagine a stagnant society, since people have been evolving for eons. Anyway, thanks for your input, Styles.

The Wasteland game looks like it was way ahead of its time back then! Looks cool!

Fallout is really great at getting people's imaginations going :foodndrink:

Have you tried any of the other Fallout Games? Give them a shot. You can get the originals pretty cheap and they come in a pack. New Vegas is a great game as well.

The main reason Fallout 3 is so popular is the marriage of FPS and RPG .... plus they didnt do to bad a job fleshing out the world. In comparison to New Vegas , I couldnt say , I havent played it.

Im also guessing since RPG games have been focused on the fantasy D&D senario ... That revitalising The Gama world senario grabs many peoples attention.

Its just to bad one of the devs didnt consider a multi player option by now.
