A Lorkhan Question

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 1:59 pm

First things first, hello everyone. :mage:

I'm new here but have been into The Elder Scrolls since I first played Morrowind and have read up on a bit of lore. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable in some topics but rather ignorant in others.

So the question. Why is Lorkhan often referred to as the "God of Men" or "Champion of Men" or something like that? Is this just short-hand for "Champion/God of all who believe that the creation of Mundus was a good thing" seeing as the majority of Men believe so and the majority of Mer disagree? What about the Dunmer and Redguard, how does Lorkhan feel about them?

In short to tide you over until a REAL Lore buff comes along...It is because he was the one who made Nirn a possibility and early Mer, who enslaved Man hated Lorkhan for tricking the Aedra into losing parts of their divine essences to create Nirn. So Man championed him as their champion as he was the one whom the Mer hated. There is a lot more to it like the Shezarrines and what not but I am some what lacking on the necessary knowledge to make a informed statement about it. This could probably be wrong as well.

Most questions regarding the creation myths, pantheons in general, and so on can be answered with these three books

So, why is he? Well, men, along with Vivec, view the creation of Mundus as a positive thing, a testing ground so to speak in order to go to a greater existence. As such, they believe Shor/Shezarr/Lorkhan's sacrifice to be positive. In addition, incarnations of Shor/Shezarr/Lorkhan have appeared as avatars to aid mankind against mer or to help man in general. Two of the more famous, though also quite infamous, are Pelinal Whitestreak, and the underking, Wulfharth.

As I noted, Vivec views the space god in a positive light, though his reason is slightly different than most of mankind's idea There's a good chance so due the dunmer, as they regard the daedra as ancestors too and mainstream mer call Shor/Shezarr/Lorkhan a daedroth, or "not our ancestor." However, I'd assume your run of the mill dunmer isn't going to really know, or care.

For the Redguards, they're Imperialized to [censored] hell, so they're just a bunch of Niners. Though, what you probably mean are the Yokudans. For them....[censored] it I don't know. I'm not very well versed in Yokudan culture and myths.

Yokudans called him Sep, and believed that Tall Papa created him from the skin of the dead Satakal. They view him as a negative influence. I forget which book mentions it but it's stated that all elves (save Dunmer) view Lorkhan negatively and all humans (save Redguards) view him positively.

The Yokudan version of Lorkhan, Sep, is a lazy, greedy, gluttonous individual. In an effort to stop the Satakal cycle, he created Mundus. This didn't seem to work, as Redguards still want to go to the Far Shores.

That'd be the Monomyth. But Bretons don't like Lorkhan, either.

I take it that breton view him unfavorably, due to aldmeri influence and nordic raids in eras past.

I like Hellmouth's anolysis. Simple, not complicated, tells you what you need to know.

Hopefully the OP is well on the path toward becoming a lore buff and understanding 'Shor Son of Shor' at first read...
