Lose the Bats

Post » Fri Sep 16, 2011 1:22 pm

whoever said the bats were a horror movie cliche needs to go spelunking. bats love quiet, expansive tunnels and caves, hell theres a colony that lives under a bridge not far from where i live :foodndrink: we get along great.
just like wolves, bats are a misunderstood creature that has been revered and hated simply out of ignorance. they have a place in the caves of skyrim, and are a welcome ambient addition that makes the dungeon feel more alive.

And they eat mosquitoes. Therefore, they are good guys.

Make no mistake, I'm not arguing that bats don't exist in nature, just that the execution wasn't very natural. It reads like a trope, a jump-out scare, etc. and for that it is corny. I'd rather hear the bats and have it left to my imagination than see a poorly executed scripted event that transports me instantly out of the cave I was exploring and into the uncanny valley.

gotta luv those 'good' guys: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/11/first-vampire-bat-death-us_n_924996.html LOL

i think it would be really cool if they made them 'real'...skyrim real. not some tame cave dwelling nocturnal bug eater but more of a 'you enter our cave and we'll eat your face' kind of creature.

Well... You seem pretty alone in that regard, mate. The rest of us seemed to enjoy it. And instead of making us think "Oh, that is lame" we think nothing really.. Because it adds to the atmosphere and helps pull you into the world, rather than pull you out in your case. Sorry.

Perhaps you should just mod them out if you are on PC?

I'll just politely disagree. I was happy when I first saw the bats. It added to my realism needs...you know, that 'immersion' thing. :)

You think it's a cheap scare? It's more like us scaring the bats. Felt no fear at all. More like "woah! cool bats!"

I liked them, but I agree that it was a bit obvious they were a fake effect when they disappeared in the (close) distance without a trace. But I guess it's either that or no bats at all since making them 'real' creatures that land somewhere and don't just disappear would eat more performance than it's worth.

I think (hope) it was sarcasm.

There is no room for sarcasm in this thread, this is clearly serious business.

I dont mind them. I would have loved them if they werent just a "GHASP BATS ok now theyre gone" kinda thing but more of a few of them flying around all the time in caves, its also more realistic, but oh well.

It adds realism, but of course it did look strange when they flew of and disapeared ,, like kapoff.

Grass looks stupid and even if they wouldn't they wouldn't fit into a grassland.

I've been in about 30 caves in my lifetime and I can tell you, all the actual pitch-black ones (that is, with no permanent lighting) were CRAMMED with bats.
BTW I saw one yesterday in broad daylight - took me 5 minutes to identify it as a bat, they're so darned fast
