Lose the "Extras",please.

Post » Sun Jan 16, 2011 12:36 am

By "Extras" I mean unneeded objects that just potentially slows down the game. For example, FO(fallout) had tin cans and other useless things laying around that just increased possible chances for lag and freezing. It added more to the enviroment around you,but the game wouldn't be tarnished if you discarded some of these things.

Clutter objects like Tin Cans are far from useless, without clutter, everything would feel very sterile.

No way. I want them in. How boring the world is without clutter. Use low graphics settings.

I really hope Bethesda gives us huge amounts of clutter.

I completely agree.
Small things like these contribute much more to a game than one might think.
It's details like these that seperate realy good games from superb games.

That is correct, one of the biggest charms of the game for me just happens to be how alive the world feels with how it is shown to us. People have and store things. Not to mention there can even be quests related to clutter. *Raises an eyebrow towards the general direction of Mournhold*

"discard some of these things"

Clutter is needed but there can also be too much. Thats all i'm trying to say.

Keep the clutter, apart from making the game world look more real mods like Unnecessary Violence meant lots of fun throwing vases and plates at people and assorted creatures.

I don't expect lots of objects you can interact with in an enviroment like Skyrim, rubble and debris in places like ruins is a must have. These kind of things have virtually no problem because the problem is usually things that CAN be interacted with.

I agree, not everything needs to serve a specific gameplay purpose to have a reason to be in the game. If that were the case, we might as well just have the locations in the game consist of blank white walls with only objects that are useful to the player being placed in the environment. Without a good amount of clutter, the game world feels a lot less believable. Things like plates, forks, bowls, bones, candles, and other such items just help to make the game world feel more like it's an actual place, rather than just a place that exists only to provide players with a place to kill monsters and do quests in. I mean, that might be what the game world is, but if you can make it feel like an actual place, players are likely to like it more.

Why are you saying that clutter takes away from other parts of the game?
I'm wondering what parts those may be.

With today's technology that little bit of "clutter" can go towards something alot bigger. A brand new Engine, brand new options. Did I just make another assertion,sorry..

Rubbish is there to annoy you, OR to make a penny of if you are low on cash.

I played the maintenance guy, The Cleaner in FO3, with a "thing" for rubbish. He cleared out most areas of rubbish and became the richest
maintenance guy in the known world.

It's really hard to avoid rubbish when I start a new char now, it's so free and can get you so rich in 24 days. ;) RL!

If rubbish is worth nothing, then I would consider....

Having all that clutter is why every interior has to be a separate cell. I don't think it's necessary for every object to have its own physics, especially stuff that's useless to interact with. Maybe a compromise would be to have the objects rendered but just remove the physics so they're pretty much static in the world. At least then it'd be easier to decorate because objects would stay put and perhaps hog up less resources as well.

Someone else proposed an idea I like where only close up objects have physics. With occlusion culling (if that is what I think it is) that could make the game run much faster.
