Losing Respect for Gaming News Sites.

Post » Tue Mar 25, 2014 4:06 am

When you are in the spot light. Everyone has an opinion about you, be it approval or condemnation. ESO has set it's self on a path with development and they have stuck to. Some features are common and some are different to other MMOs. Some concepts have been welcomed and some have been scorned. This " media " coverage will continue for some time to come. I fear that when the reports stop, be that they are good or bad, that is when things would be getting stale.

As long as ESO continues to plot it's own course through the MMO waters, there will nay sayers and accolades galore.

The developers have created a good New game here ( my opinion ) there are still rough edges of course, but the future of ESO is looking good. With the ability of the developers to listen to and accept player feed back; this game has a very good chance of staying afloat for a long time.

Path of Exile was pretty bad. I played for 15 minutes then uninstalled.

I'm pretty jaded when it comes to most gaming sites. The majority of them also thought the ending to Mass Effect 3 was worthy of the series. Bleh!

They do it coz they have not gotten marketing money from Zenimax

Every site that gives "news" etc in da internets is effected by marketing money.

You do not pay marketing money, you get dung over your brand/title.

You pay marketing money to these sites and they give you 90+ score in meta.

---

You can check the list of shame from here :

http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/total-war-rome-ii/critic-reviews

Any of the sites giving above 75(green)=> is a site that should not be trusted at all.

That game gave out most marketing money in the history of gaming, so that list is very accurate. ( it has either unprofessional reviews or paid reviews , either way, list of shame ).

my 2c i hope you use it.

So why no headlines for WoW buying max level characters, mounts, pets, boosts? On top of sub and xpac costs.

I've not looked at a Gamespot (or IGN) article for years. They went down the pan a long time ago.

The only game sites I read are Eurogamer and RPS, and if I want a proper critique I'll read the industry press. Too many networks busy themselves with either taking publisher money for ads and favourable press, or giving them a hard time because they don't buy ads. They're not all like that, but how do you tell when they are? You can't =p

WoW came out like a decade ago man. It's like being pissed and trying to get an old man to change his beliefs. Forget about WoW! This is TESO. A brand new game that has a decades worth of mmo history to learn from. Or not. Maybe we haven't learned anything, as there hasn't been a really popular new mmo since EVE and WoW.

Wow, all those sites gave Rome Total War 2 a 90+ in rating? With as many bugs and problems as that game had and still has? I didn't buy it and haven't played it cause of all the negative feedback from people regarding the problems with that game. That just goes to show you what marketing money does.

Then you miss the point of the thread. It was a "News Update". News is NOT opinion. This is the definition of bad journalism for all this video news flash really ended up being from a promo to debate the sub cost. The journalist pushed opinion upon us instead of allowing the readership to debate the news on points they find important and not the agenda of news provider.

It is this mix of pretending to tell news and thrusting in opinion blogs which is destroying journalism. Honestly this video was not an extreme example of this but it still spiralled into flames at the end with how he presented the information on costs.

Sorry that makes no sense Man U are over 100 years old if they started to sell tickets for 300£ each ppl would complain.

If one product gets criticised over a sub but one doesn't that's biased repoting.

There was quite a fiasco around the last gen console launch (and just after) where game sites received goody-bags or incentives from gaming companies for positive reviews.

You really have to take anything the media says with a large dose of salt. Sometimes however, they are onto something, but more often that not a little truth is covered in lies or something gets blown way out of proportion for sensetional headlines.

Gamespot were one of those sites that showed some extreme bias around platforms.

IGN was no different.... in fact, I don't think any commercial gaming site came through that period without showing bias.

Ofc, it was expected from platform specific sites, but not the supposed "professional commercial media outlets".

This has been going on for a long time, however... last gen was particularly suspect.

Would first be necessary to have respect for gaming news sites in order to lose it.

I agree..

I have lost repsect for game review sites, game reviewers a long time ago, this is an example of one of the many reasons why.

I decide what games I play based off the facts of the game, given by the developer, not someone's opinion, or ever changing thoeries..

At this point let the chips fall where they may, like it or not, it is a done deal for now..

Technically, he didn't openly make a statement. He asked a question to spark discussion in the comments. His wording of that question was far from neutral though. He left it for us to infer his opinion, which I lack respect for. Unfortunately, there is a large portion of our human population that are impressionable and easily influenced by this type of thing.

"Is this a rediculous amount..."

Oh well... he won't be the last. I'm still going to enjoy myself on launch.

With the changes youtube has made, it has killed independant youtube personalities. Pretty much everyone reporting on youtube about games currently has the backing of 1 or more companies that transfer their agendas to the youtuber. Bad or good reviews are submitted to appease their backers whether or not it is the truth.

"decide what games I play based off the facts...given by the developer..."

O.o Please tell me you're joking. I'm totally cool with people saying newsites are corrupt, untrue, blah blah blah. HOWEVER, let's not even remotely pretend that the devs aren't spinning everything they say with the intention of getting more subs. MODS? TESO has MODS? NO. They don't. It's one glaring and perfect example of the devs trying to trick people into buying into their vision. TES games are known for modding, mmo's don't have mods, but what they do have are addons. So the devs think...hmm...why dont we just call addons 'mods'?

arg. it annoys me when people are actually convinced devs are just giving facts out to the public.

Media is all the same they will build up a sport star for a few years and then tear them apart in public if they put one foot wrong. It is what sells newspapers and in Gamespots case subscription fees and advertising. All reviews are opinion based. PC Gamer UK is a perfect example on how they will build hype around a new game during previews and then when its released they will rip it apart and mark it down, even after telling the reader its going to be a good game in the preview.

Just watch the previews to ESO and Wildstar and then read the reviews when the game is released. See how they rip into the game for having X content over Y features.

Oh and I predict Wildstar will be free to play by the end of its first year of release. ESO will be going strong this time next year.

Thus , true gamers should trust only gamers and old gamers who are streaming and doing videos in da internets.

AngryJoe

Jesse Cox

Force

Kripparrian

TotalBiscuit

These are pretty much the ones to follow for honest and all around feeling from games to buy. (there is more ofc).

Also we all as gamers should support them and people like them, and make sure that their contributions to give us information is not effected or blocked by big medias or companies. (as we have seen has happened every now and then).

Could see ESO doing the hybrid route, like SWTOR. Lot of folks forget - they still have a subscription model, along with partially hampered FTP.

I take gamers opinions seriously. TotalBiscuit is NOT a gamer. Sorry, but other than indy games, you will not get an actual unbiased opinion from him. Kripparian? yeah, he just plays games, so you can take what you will from it. AngryJoe can be biased, but if you know what he's biased against, you can take what he says with a grain of salt. Agreed on the others, except I don't know Jessecox. Have to check him out.

I agree though, we need to support actual gamers, way more than people that are just doing it because it's a paycheck.

So many MMOs have gone FTP and one gets 'the impression' (for we don't know as a fact), they may not be doing too well. Yet they champion another game to enter the same risky model. Sure its not their money and they want to appear 'popular' and 'common'. They don't count, how Bethesda does financially does.

Once people take a political position they often leave honest opinions at the door. And make no mistake, the idea of sub vs f2p is political even if it isnt dem v gop. People have staked out their position and will do anything to support that ideal.

Not a jab, but seriously what does that mean? What AAA franchise title have you purchased recently that was NOT $59.99?

Honestly, after the fiasco FFXIV went through, i wouldn't use them as an example of box price.
