Lost all drive to play this game because of a bug. DX

Post » Sat Jan 16, 2016 4:39 pm

Specifically, the settlement bug where the Pip-Boy displays essentially 0 Water, Defense, and Beds whenever you're not in the settlement, causing happiness to tank.

This bug drives me nuts and has taken so much joy out of what is otherwise an amazing game. :(

I dunno, but it seems to me that the pip boy misrepresenting these stats is a pretty minor thing. You go back to the settlement and it gets fixed, right? Frankly, I provide my settlements with of food, beds, defenses, and I don't give a damn if they are happy or not... so I don't care what the pip shows.

Nope, the pipboy is accurate, and the stats it shows lowers happiness and sometimes even defences/crops/generators will have been destroyed. Even if you go there and fix things or it magically fixes itself, happiness will be affected by the reduced stats.

Nothing new, just google it. The workaround is to delete all TVs

There are also a workaround for the size limit ...

That's a partial fix. Have to do a few other things on top of this.

The ammo bug is more of a concern for me. What the pip boy shows doesn't match what's actually in your inventory. But yeah, the settlement numbers are annoying too. Sometimes I wonder how things like this make it in to games without getting fixed. Someone had to have noticed it while they were working on it.

Probably some intern guy reported it, who got promptly shut down and silenced by his boss so the reports looked better.

Sad, but I can see that happening. In fact, it's happened to me.

You were saying there are other things you can do besides delete TV's. Can you list some please, or point us to a link maybe?

Thanks. :)

I've written all this in several threads (at least one is still on the first page)...I'll try to remember...

-destroy TVs and jukeboxes in settlements.

-remove radio beacons (the things that attract settlers), and if you do leave any make sure to run out of the area (where you get message about recruitment signal being lost) if you do fast travel anywhere near a settlement...keep in mind if you have a few settlements some can be close to where you're killing random enemies and the radio beacon can be within range - which means fast traveling from basically anywhere can trigger the bug.

-make sure settler beds are far enough apart for them to get to easily - too close together and they can cause this bug.

-final tip - always save a fresh save (no saving over old savegames) - and don't load and play an auto save or fast save.

If you know that its a bug, cant you just ignore that and continue playing? It doesn't even affect gameplay like a lot of other bugs..

I haven't had it happen in a while, but that bug that caused you to teleport after aiming down the sights, got old after the tenth time..

I honestly have no idea why they haven't already fixed such an obvious straight-in-your-face bug. And how could something like a TV affect it? Doesn't make any sense to me.

The radio beacon hasn't been an issue for me, seeing as it never happened in some of my other settlements that had beacons. Perhaps it's just the TVs for me because it happened in Sanctuary and Oberland Station, where I did have TVs.

I can't really ignore a bug that causes my settlements' happiness to crash like a lead balloon because I like working with settlements.

It makes us as unhappy as it makes the settlers, so no this can't be ignored.

I feel like murdering everyone on the map when this happens over and over.

Thankfully since I have done all the above I don't get the bug any more. I also make sure to never save over old savegames as well (always make a fresh save), more gamer voodoo which I think works.

Oh I didn't know that the happiness rating was actual...I thought that was a false reading as well..

No wonder people were so upset..

Thank you!

I had no idea about the different saved game types. Sheesh, I do all of that.

Silly question ... can these items be stored in the workshop (tv, jukebox, radio beacons) or do they have to be scrapped to remove them completely?

Should be able to store them, same end result - so long as they're no longer actually sitting around in the settlement.

After more than 160 hours gameplay on PC 1.2.37 the beginners tip:

- Press [ESC] and then HELP topics and read them all (settlement manual) especially about settlement happiness and power grid

- Don't build electric apparatus like TVs in settlements, scrap them if they are there cause they bug resources.

- When reaching settlement size limit, drop some guns in settlement and then [TAB] them into Settlement Workbench to lower the size limit (workaround). The size limit does not have game relevans, it is a graphical thing.

- Some places in settlements aren't actually suitable for stores, for example in Taffington Boathouse when placing wooden floor over water and trying to build settlement stores there, it is not possible to build the bar, and only the medical store actually get service.

- Play on "Very Hard" difficulty if you have FPS experience because of the legendary rewards.

- Next tip is a spoiler:

It is a roleplaying game and even if the wasteland is really really big, probably 5-7 times bigger than Fallout NV with several really really big towns, factories, highways and more, you are supposed to be a father or mother with a missing son. The game doesn't really strike you for just wandering off track, but starting on any settlement building before pursuing the kidnapped son is really not roleplaying! And it only makes it more difficult later, since settlements require supervision. It is much easier to get friendly with all the factions while finding the answer to the kidnapping and then exploring the wasteland, because then your exploration will be supported by the factions and go much quicker (the map details are enormous!) Then after all locations are exploited, start the quest and make the faction choices and start building settlements ...

TBH, it seems to happen to me COMPLETELY at random.

TVs, no TVs, radio tower, no tower, radio tower on/off, fast travel v. wander off on foot- there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, at least for me.

If my pip-boy feels like giving me bad info, it will give me bad info, full stop. Fortunately, it doesn't happen all that often, and it's easily corrected. There are bugs that irk me way worse than this one does.

This is annoying, but it's a minor enough issue to me that it hasn't really impacted my enjoyment of the game at all. And I'm thoroughly involved in the settlement building aspects of the game, so it's not like I can just ignore it. I already unlocked the Benevolent Leader achievement, so keeping settler happiness at a maximum isn't really a priority for me anymore.

There is no standard "fix" for this bug. It can be caused by many things and the advice that works for some people on some systems doesn't work for others. The main problem is that it isn't just an error in display. The game thinks that those numbers are correct and uses them for settlement management (until you return and correct them, of course, and then it will have the correct values to use).

As for role playing, I'd like to inform everyone that it is perfectly good role playing, even superior role playing, to NOT run out into a life-threatening post-apocalyptic wasteland that you know almost nothing about and instead focus on learning the current world 200 years after the world you remember. This is all the more true assuming you are actually intelligent and plan carefully to maximize chances of success in achieving your ultimate goal rather than going off half-cocked and getting yourself (and probably many others) killed, thus failing to achieve what you supposedly wanted to accomplish in the first place. Keeping a cool head, planning carefully, gathering intelligence about the world and the various people in it, possibly forming alliances, and certainly building a strong base of operations to attempt to journey into very dangerous areas to attempt your goal... all of these are far more role playing than rushing out into the wasteland on an emotional knee-jerk effort that is almost certain to end in failure. This is even more true when you consider that you know nothing about the time frame involved and it may be too late to do anything about what happened for all you know.

All of this is assuming that you wish to play the role of a concerned parent, of course. Fact is, you can role play any character you want. I role play an adolescent girl, not a parent. Only thing I need is far better character assets, outfits, etc. I always have to use mods for these things in BGS games so it's nothing new.
