[Help] Lost in the Mod djungel.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:57 am

Hello.

I've just reinstalled Oblivion, togheter with Shivering Isle. And I'm looking for mods.
I did play alot of Oblivion for a long time ago, but I still remember alot of it. What I'm after now is a new experiance and perhaps a better.

Easily put it, I'm lost. There is to much to choose from. So I turn to you here to help me get started :)

I've looked into the "Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul" mod. Is this really as good as it looks? But does it work with other mods?
Should I go for this easy way. or will I have to go with a mix of othermods to really get out most of my Oblivion experiance?

I'm really helpful for all the help I can get. Since reading about "Must have mods" is abit tricky since you don't know if they are compatible with eachother.
So, anyway.
Cheers!

Personally, I wouldn't play the game w/o OOO. It does make the game much harder, though, especially on lower levels, so you should be prepared for that. MMM is also a must for me - not only does it add new creatures etc., but it basically transforms Cyrodiil into a living, dynamic world. They work very well together as well.

I got a reply on The Nexus forum saying that I should really try OOO and two others.
MOE http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7902
FCOM http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12249

And some other mods.
I was just wondering how do I know in what order I should load them?
Here is a link to the post http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=203973

A reply here or there doesn't matter.
Cheers.

There are four sources I have relied on - to a greater or lesser extent depending on where I've been at - in addition to (occasionally) trial-and-error or common sense / reasoning / intuition :

1. Readme files and other documentation - *read these*, whatever else you do. The time spent doing so will save you more time later on, stress, headaches, divorce... you know, that kind of stuff. ;)

2. Instructions from the OP of the latest official thread for each mod in question - again, definitely *read these* (and ask questions as needed in said threads), as updates can be frighteningly frequent in some cases. :)

3. Guides and advice at trustworthy sites, like devakm's (though this one's a bit outdated here and there nowadays), Tomlong's, or wherever else.

4. BOSS (possibly with BOMM as well) - if trying a whole bunch of mods, especially for the first time, *use this*.

But all said and done, you will find your own way, and the methods that work best for you. Good luck with it.

What I'm trying to do is to att. OOO, FCOM and MMM. Then add an UI Addon and I'm all set.
But it has to much to do, stuff to get. I... I just... Its so overwhelming it just gives me a headache and gets me off.
I don't know how to use Wrye or BOSS or what BOMM is even. And the readme files on the internet of those i.e Wrye is out of date.
Why isn't there just a step by step guide for new users?

I tried doing everything from this page. http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/fcominstall.html
It looked easy. But then I got to http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/fcomloadorderexpanded.html and I was like "what?" They don't even explain how to change the list in Wrye or with BOSS... or... I don't know... what?!
Geez. I really get...almost angry about this.

Well, now my Oblivion won't even start so I might just have to try everything again....F-!!!

You might want to try a step-by-step approach (except when it comes to FCOM, which only allows step-by-step to some extent...) - install a mod, try the game a bit; install another mod, try the game a bit...

As far as guides go, the dedicated [RELz] thread for something like OOO or FCOM is the best way to go*, for current information, and dialogue with those who know best (i.e., the creators and/or maintainers/keepers of any given mod).

Guides for beginners? Well, FCOM isn't really wired that way, but maybe the closest thing would be http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/ FCOM installation guide. Also goes through and explains what all these things are and how to start using them (e.g., Wrye Bash, BOSS, BOMM, etc.)

Perhaps you could start experimenting with getting an OOO install up and running smoothly, then elaborate some, next time around?

edit: * Usually pretty easy to find, in the last, say, half a dozen pages of threads here.

I've Used Tomlong's guide...
untill "http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/walkthroughs/fcomguide/bainfcom"
I'm stuck, what does he mean with "needs converting to BAIN package" "need to be installed and converted" (What converted? how? where?...) "BSA needs to be renamed" ?? Should I remove the BSA in the name, or just rename it... TO WHAT? whatever I want? "already simple package (or merge onto OWC)" Merge? HOW DO I DO THAT!?
How can a guide tell me to do stuff like I would already know them?
Atleast it could show me a link to where I can read it. Or do I HAVE to go through pages of pages to maybe find the solution? Where do I start to look....
*headache* !!!!

Futher down the guide it kinda explains it, but I thought I wasn't supposed to go there yet since the other things weren't finished.
Well I'm off to try it.

Isn't there an easier way?
I mean do I have to go through all this just to add three mods? Well big mods. There is a ton of stuff in the Tomlong's guide that didn't make sense, or even was necessary for a newbie like me.
Why can't anyone just upload thier settings and I can load it in... because that's how its works right?

Do I really have to read pages and pages about stuff I know nothing about just to get this running? Really?
