Tolkien is known as the father of conventional Fantasy Fiction.
It is hard to deny his influence on the Elder Scrolls, and many other works.
Comparing them would be like comparing me to my dad. Or anyone to their parent.
ES and LOTR have similarities and differences, and I don't really see the point in comparing them.
Personally I prefer Elder Scrolls, much in part to Ted Peterson and Micheal Kirkbride's work on the lore and design.
Mainly because they brought ES away from being a generic Tolkien Clone(like a lot of DnD campaign settings, Dragon Age and The Witcher) and into it's own thing.
