I love documentaries! What are your favorites?

Post » Mon Apr 04, 2016 5:52 am

I love to learn. I love to watch national geographic, cosmos, all that stuff. I love documentaries too. I love to watch documentaries about the sea, sunken ships, space, the pyramids/ancient egypt, the mayans, all that stuff. I just LOVE IT~!!!!!!!!! okay calm down.

Any of you all love documentaries and love learning stuff like that? I'm a tactile learner so something I can see instead of just hearing really helps me absorb information.

Anyone have any good links to documentaries? I have netflix and hulu at my disposal, and there are some online for free on youtube or other sites. Any recommendations?

Heheh I dont think Borat counts.. (pointing up)

This is really tough Batman I enjoy them myself(when I am around a teli) but I have no idea what there called.

I remember A silk road set of em, A golden horde set of em, and a Teutonic knight one I found particularly enjoyable. And pretty much any documentary about Hyena's or Pangolins (scaled ant eater), or the Tasmanian tiger (that ones all gone now ) cause I love them.

Hell I would suggest (not sure how old you are) but mutual of Omaha's Wild kingdom were really cool back in the day if you dig animals, And the old "IN search off" you like well its Nimoy, uhh hunting out well the strange. There was also one called Connections( the bbc one) that was pretty danged memorable.

ehh Thats all I got

Anything by Bettany Hughes. Her field is history. Most of her stuff can be found easily on Youtube. Also, Simon Schama. He covers history and the visual arts. I especially like his "The Power of Art" series. This series can be found on Youtube as well. A few individual documentaries I like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEWvJ0jpPpw A documentary filmed mostly at the Jack Kerouac School of Poetics, Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. It is narrated by Allen Ginsberg. This film has special significance for me because I (and another member of these forums, Shelly Mars) appear in it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ3Aq-xt9y0 A documentary about novelist and poet Charles Bukowski.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlAZV_EsSSE A 2006 biography of Hunter S. Thomson.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VValA0xVZQA A documentary about a strike against the Duke Power Company-owned Eastover Coal Company's Brookside Mine in Harlan County, Kentucky in 1973.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DRP7KxjFXQ A 1936 film about the dust Bowl, directed by Pare Lorentz. Music by the incomparable Virgil Thomson.

The BBC's Look Around You series while somewhat dated gives a thorough grounding in the sciences and they can all be found on youtube, here is the first module on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBaVwwuErmU. Just be sure to have your copy book to hand to take notes.

One of my favourite series was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6UObH0xxZU&list=PL9A225C7F88795681 featuring Aubrey Manning, a little old and out of date in places but still the best documentary series on geology.

Going way, way back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH7SJf8BnBI by Jacob Bronowski is a must, as is James Burke's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAGMNVluHs4&list=PL-teo99ENSypJDyeXmEpLOxWMB9UVPbOS. As is Carl Sagan's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc1NatQKSP0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKlHkhcWeh4 with Bruce Parry is very watchable. Somewhat older is David Attenborough's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhexRcrx68k&list=PLGm1Z-hE2T3Xw_Duy64fQEOn3n_lG19HI.

Adam Hart Davis did a lot of good series such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSTj2QUSlrI

Mary Beard does good programmes on the Romans, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rggk_H3jEgw

The BBC recently had a China season in February where they showed a few documentaries. One documentary series was called the story of China and gave a historical story of China over the past two millennia. Another three part documentary was devoted to Chinese New Year. My Mandarin teacher was very impressed with them and said that they gave a very fair and balanced view of China.

Anything with Craig Sechler narrating. I love to channel surf and hit a documentary that is voiced by the one and only Adoring Fan/male elves in Oblivion/Morrowind (the male ghosts in Skyrim, and Butch in FO3, etc.)

Connections with James Burke is one of my favorite series to watch sadly it has been about 15 to 20 years since I saw an episode :sadvaultboy: . I used to watch it all the time on TLC when that channel was still about learning at least the one showing in Canada.

It's mostly science (or is it SCIENCE!!!) and history. All it really boils down to, is whatever I happen to run across that catches my interest at the time.

With at least three votes they musta done something right. heheheh

In the same boat (middle of U. S.) I morn for the time when TLC was about well Learning , and Mtv was about music the whole world is upside down now...... (I also have some words about what the history channel is now but.....)

Heck it got so bad I just gave up on TV thinking that I would become a super evil genius (wily coyote sort) by reading books...... So far no not so much, I can barely type And have a heck of a time tearing myself away from fantasy and sci fi fiction.

Winter on Fire

It is a documentary on the struggles of the People involved in the 2014 Ukranian Revolution.

It doesn't talk about the politics, it focuses on those poor people massacred by government forces, priests and medics were even targeted, that documentary nearly brought me to tears.

Oh, great documentary is An Idiot Abroad.

(In India) "See that man there, he's walking down the street holding a toilet seat. So, you know, everyone who sees him knows he is going to have a ****"

(On Petra, Jordan) "I wouldn't want to live in it. I mean, you get up, look out the window in the morning and you see what? Some caves. I'd want to be living in the cave, so when I look out of the window I can see that".

He is an idiotic genius. Love it.

Yes that's true. Best stick with Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan then for an authentic documentary.

Do shows or specials about history count as documentaries? I like that kind of stuff. If it's talking about Antiquity or the Middle Ages I will be glued to the tv.
