I Love Fallout, but why is the protagonist voiced?

I'm personally indifferent towards the inclusion of a voiced protagonist, it was initially disconcerting as it broke Fallout convention but it's a logical narrative progression.

As Todd Howard has said, pretty much every AAA game that "does storytelling well" has a voiced protagonist.

My grievance is with many of the holophrase dialogue options and the incongruity of the selected option and the articulated outcome.

For example the dialogue option "you're still here" when selected eventuates in the line "Codsworth, you're still here.Does that mean other people could be alive as well?"

The second half of that sentence isn't implied from the dialogue option and is assumption the player may disagree with, or may never have asserted if given an informed choice of the full dialogue option.

Of course spoken language is just one step beyond. Pre-written questions, statements or responses aren't much better.

A system that recognizes and responds to player typed input would be much better (as in the old Infocom games using "Zork Interactive Language"). Unfortunately it would be way to clumsy to use in games like this where time is of the essence.

BTW I think it would be great if the Infocom building in Cambridge was a location in the game, imagine playing Zork on a working computer there!

OK, this thread has descended into bickering and personal attacks. I'm closing this before I have to start banning people.
