Love FO3, but damn the stutter and random CTDs!

Post » Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:47 am

Hi guys,

As the subject says, the game (at original settings) stutters to the point of becoming nauseating. It also has a bad habit of randomly crashing to the desktop. Unlike others who are experiencing the New Game crashes, and travel crashes, mine are totally random...but always during gameplay. I've seen CTDs after 2 minutes of playing and after 3 hours of playing. Most often they happen outdoors, but I've also crashed a couple of times while indoors and at least once while accessing Pipboy. I've scoured the internet for solutions to these issues and none that I've found are satisfactory. I've read any number of so-called "fixes" requiring editing fallout.ini settings, from the fpsclamp to the hwthreads settings, and have tried numerous things while maintaining a backed up original. So far...no dice. The best I've been able to do is to set the FPSClamp to 50, but there are occasions where it just slows it to a crawl. I've also tried shutting off Vert sync in CCC and in the game's vid settings, that didn't work either. My system is more than powerful enough to run BioShock 2 @ 1680 x 1050 on all High video settings, why would it have such troubles with FO3? Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated as I absolutely love what I've managed to play of it so far. I recently added another HD5770 to run in Crossfire mode, but that hasn't helped either. Below is my dxdiag info. Thanks so much in advance. --Mike

im having a similar issue with random crashes thta ive narrowed down to the graphics settings and the ultra profile im not sure but i think the ultra profile changes something that you normaly cant change your self unless you edit the ini file going to keep testing this out so far its been progressing well in times between crashes so im gonna try the high profile then edit those settings

I know it has been a long time since someone posted on this subject, but I have found from my own testing that if I made all of the tweaks to both the ini file and the prefs.ini file (same location), that I have a good deal of performance (60 stable fps). I have also been using Rivatuner's tool: d3d Overrider (just DL RivaTuner and goto the tools folder. You can't miss it... you won't actually use RivaTuner) to force tripple buffering in this game. So far it works like a charm. I have the same card as you guys. I have the ATI Radeon HD 5770 (two actually, crossfired with catalyst AI at advanced setting.)

I do notice that I get some frame "rubber banding/skidding/stuttering" around any ambient or positional music or sound effects (ie: the intercom in vault 101/jukebox). So far I am not out of the vault.. I am very hopeful about this. I will post again after I get out of the vault and change my audio settings (possibly disabling surround or my HD to force stereo... I'm not sure.) I will also try the "high" profile and tweak settings from there.

The fpslimit tweak definately shaved a lot of skittering off though. Even if no one reads this post after I have posted it, the information will be here for anyone else that screws up and buys this game for this card. I hate wasting money too, so I don't like giving up on a game I paid for.

OK... A list of things

1: this is not sound related... I jumped the gun on that one. Tested it and it is purely coincidental.

2: Playing with the Xbox360 controller + Triple buffering and Vsync = definate drop in frame spikes... almost completely eliminated so far. I haven't gotten into huge battles, but I have a hunch that I won't be hindered. Using the mouse gives a bit of skidding between frames. I hate that, so I am playing with a controller from now on.. Not like I haven't played this game on console er anything. I just want the better graphics :D

3: I am running into horrendous frame drops (15fps and below) when I encounter large quantities of particle effects (smoke). When the vault opened up I was cringing! ><. This is not normal for my system, so I will press on and investigate. If there is a workaround, I will post it.

Well, I have spent all day troubleshooting and looking at forums. This is the last post anyone will see for this game from me. I'm at my wit's end.

I gave the game to my brother since there is no return policy at Best Buy for PC games.... Lesson learned.. Make sure your card is "supported" before you buy. Anyway....

After combing various forums I have finally found that nothing fixes the bad frame spikes or studders except messing with the fpsclamp setting in the ini and prefs.ini files. Even with that, the game goes into slow-motion whenever the game processes frame rates below the threshold. If the clamp is below the monitor's refresh to compensate, the game speeds up unnaturally. (like fast motion).

I am not sure about the logistics of the clamping, but I know that it isn't a viable alternative to frame spuddering. The draw back of being in matrix "bullet time" mode whenever I am in a fire fight is just too unnatural. Counterwise, being in "Flash" tweaker, fast mode is not an alternative either.

If the frame studdering or the slow motion in battle doesn't bother you, I suggest you use the advice here to minimize the effects. Get RivaTuner and use d3d Overrider to get triple buffering forced, and tweak the prefs.ini and normal ini file (fpsclamp setting). That's really all the advice I have.

Sorry to hear your having the same problems as me...my gtx480 should more than well run it on ultra or high or even at all.But i get crazy stutters/jutters and being the official forum it would be nice to see a moderate reply or something and show support.Anyways...sorry to hear it drove your wits to that end...hopefully not mine...All the best.

Seriously? That svcks. I've been looking for a solution to the awful stuttering that occurs when you move the mouse quickly, which is really infuriating during combat. If there's no fix at all... I'm not sure I can keep playing with this problem.

I'll check out the triple-buffering advice and try out the ini tweaks. Perhaps it can at least be reduced to a bearable level.

I refer you to this thread to get more info on fix and tweak. I started it and lot of people answered.
