Love Lost

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:34 am

What with all the monuments and history here, I see a lot of potential in Philadelphia. Not to mention its my homeland city! As you can see I have already come up with the name, so that really leaves the plot. I don't think now wold be the best of times to start anything that would actually move at a measurable speed, but I do want this to be food for thought for anyone who would want to throw in their two cents. I've tried to make RP's before but it didn't last.

So, any help?

Well, I'm not too sure as to what to say considering you haven't really given us much to go on here. :P But I'll try and get you started.

The benefit of setting your RP in an untouched city is that it gives us many opportunities, and we can take the story anywhere we'd like (within reason). To start, I'd suggest you establish some factions and groups, each with their own agenda. And, of course, locations; it always helps to make the setting clear to the RPer, as to avoid confusion.
Couple the two above, and you've now created a foundation to build your RP on. Congrats! Similar to New Manhattan, actually. Of course, there's no rule stating a RP must be free-roam -- certainly not, but it's better to avoid having a strictly linear story. Perhaps have an underlying theme, which can you can shape the RP around.

Hope this helps at least somewhat. I realise it's not much, but the basics are key in jump starting your RP.

Hope something pops up! :D

The pleasure is mine, Anti. I wish you success. :)

Sadly, my chances of joining are slim; revision is relentless and I'm often working, so I only really have time for one RP.

Let's see if I can get another person interested. I have a possible main plot here.

The setting is some years after the bombs fell, and the city is in turmoil. Although the city hadn't been hit directly, it is on the edge of Pennsylvania, near New Jersey, which was hit by nuke gone astray that was intended for New York City. You are a commoner, someone who is trying to live and get by, but the new legislation is making it difficult. There is a faction about the streets, foul men who now choose to hurt their city rather than help it. They call themselves the Argonauts, led by Jason, their ruthless leader. They now dominate center city, becoming more numerous the closer you get to City Hall.

You live in the ghetto, the outer slums of the city, where merchants and travelers roam. Although you have some disposition to the city, the economy is so low, one cannot afford to move out. And now, with the Argonauts hearing of what the Pitt is in Harrisburg, rumor has it that they will start to enslave their own people. One man, Bannekar, is said to be forming a new alliance. A new resistance. You are not sure of what all this man wants, but are for whatever reason in intrigued by his promise to help that the Argonauts will fall. You are to head to Penn's Landing, overlooking the bridge to New Jersey (which no longer stands), and the river below to find out more about it, hoping for any way to make sure you don't become susceptible to Jason's sovereign.

How does that sound?

Well, it's a..."Evil people want enslave the weaker and then the weaker fight back" sort of situation. Those seem to be cut and dry, which isn't bad, more likely to be successful but doesn't have as much room for player freedom. Either way I'm going to have to see how you flesh this one out before I make a stand. Could turn out interesting. I'll have to wait and see.

I'm pretty much in the same position on Yttrium when it comes to whether I'll be participating myself or not-as well as on how busy I'll be once it's finally up(with any luck, not too much so).

The idea isn't horrible, but some advice(as it's general enough that I'm not sure if you intend to apply this as directly as the plot suggests so far):
Try to make it where no one is so in power(no matter what kind, doesn't have to be political) that they're the essential choosers of how the plot goes-also, it's preferable (in my opinion) to have an open, and not a linear plot. It creates more opportunities to effect the direction that the RP will take for every member of that RP, and more opportunities for the ending(if there ever is one, of course).

Another thing, having an (elaborate) explanation to why the groups are there, and a culture to the groups there, is a good idea. Perhaps not necessary, but a good idea. To the point of its founders and those founders ideologies/the original followers ideologies and such. And making them more gray, in the matter of morality, helps too. A lot of complaints about Fallout 3(and though it's not a text RP, it's supposed to be of the RPG genre in video games) was that it was just "Enclave bad, Brotherhood of Steel good," and that there was also no option to NOT join the Brotherhood of Steel or to join the Enclave. You could help and hurt either, but you couldn't actually join the one you wanted.

One last bit is how it seems all members are stuck as the same "sort" of position-which limits the variety of characters a person could decide to be(though, if they can quickly later branch out, that isn't too horrible)-and it seems you're stuck helping one group. It limits choice-which is okay, but again (in my opinion) less preferable for more room to choice.

You don't have to listen to my advice, of course-most of it isn't necessary and is of my very unprofessional opinion. ;]

Well, I'd actually love to mold my RP after what other people want, as I lack expertise in giving it to the public. I have listened to both of your statements and formulated a refined backdrop.

There is a faction about the streets, a group calling themselves the Argonauts. They are a semi-pacifist group who were formed by a man named Jason. He claims he is looking for the betterment of the city, taking residence in City Hall. He rose up while the city was still recouping, gathering some men and all the best necessities, and taking city hall by simple force. He is trying to stay on top, and feed those who follow, leaving the outsiders to dry. If one wants to eat, and drink cleanly, one must join him.

Then there are the Quakers, a faction that promotes peace, who give give what they have to the populace via caravans, led by a Banneker Nelson. One would think that their passiveness would render them easy pickings, but any who have tried haven't been recorded as coming back with anything, or coming at all. And for some mysterious reason, the Argonauts never attack . . . The Quakers have some popularity, and many numbers for those who like that kind of peace, but many are just roaming freely, not sanctioned out to either group, or to scared to venture past the center city gates. They are stationed in the only remaining sky-scraqer, which is only a third of its original size.

You live in either the good part of the inner city, or the ghetto, the outer slums of the city, where merchants and travelers roam. The rest is open ended, but your only goal is to survive.

That's a lot better-I especially like the reference to the Quakers, as one of the tinier of details. :] But yeah, it's far better than the more common and (at least somewhat) cliche of total good versus total evil. Which, is both subjective and-even when subjective-impossible.

I might just join-but I'll have to see how you further develop the RP/how it goes. As well as if I'll have the time-The Warren doesn't take up too much since it's not fast-paced in posts, but school in my life often takes quite a bit. I've already stated it, it's just a warning-as the odds of me having time or not(based on school) is pretty impossible for me to determine at the moment. And school starts for me again in two days.

So, yeah this was here first. :icecream: But I'd love to collaborate and make one with you together. FOr those who are reading this confused, as you probably saw there is another Philadelphia set RP, that I was planning on doing. I'd like to work with him in collaboration for this.
