I'd love to see a Codex

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:39 pm

When playing Morrowind and Oblivion, I took a lot of time reading the in-game books to gain a little more insight about the culture and history of the game. Not sure if this has been said already, but, In Skyrim, I'd love to see a codex or something, that just lays it all out and goes into detail about things as you encounter them, like in Mass Effect. Would anyone else like a codex in Skyrim?

What, you mean http://uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page?

A codex doesn't seem terribly needed, when you can just use the wiki if you want information. Although if Bethesda wants to, then sure why not.

A system like that might be well suited for corridor-style Bioware games, but not for an open-world game like Skyrim. Something laid out on a plate just seems out of place in a world where you need to explore to find anything else. Besides, the books and bookstore method is time-tried and people are used to it. :spotted owl:

That's what we've got books for, don't we? I don't need the TES equivalent of a pokédex, magically revealing the history of everything I encounter.

The ME codex surprised me, esp considering half or more of it is voiced

I would like a Bestiary, with little concept art sketches.

Yeah that'd be amazing. Especially if it was voiced, like in Mass Effect.

I disagree as i love finding and reading the books in TES and having a codex would seem to cheapen that IMO.

I realize this is not quite what the original post is about, but it would be nice if we had a journal in which we could write our own notes.

No

These pretty much say it all. The great fun of Morrowind and Oblivion books is having to find them, and remember what you learned in one when you find another one.

Well I'd love it but if they would add a couple of quests instead of it,I'd prefer the quests

NO!
1. Codex means TRUE info about a piece of lore. Unlike most other lore, TES lore is filled with bias, propaganda and lies. That makes exploring it far more interesting
2. No Codex can make justice to complexity of TES lore. Visit http://imperial-library.info/ to see how much [censored] lore there is
3. If Dev's have time to write Codex updates, then they better use it to write some more in-game books or some nice conversation with some scholar

Yeah :) sorta like Mass Effects but a little more in-depth. Also, as you fight more of the same enemy (say, after you've faught 50 wolves or 15 liches), the codex also tells you what effects they're weak/resistant too :)

Personally I loved how you could collect books into your own personal library (although I hated organizing it) but I also like the withers codex were info on beast were collected.

I think adding some sort of bestiary into the game that gets updated every time you read a new book about beasts. Also there should be libraries (not in some nord villages but elven) and easier way to organize book into shelves.

I would like an "Enemy Codex". After you successfully defeat an enemy, you are given the option to dissect it after it has been looted. This dissection allows you to determine strengths and weaknesses (Resists Fire, Immune to Poison, Weakness to Frost, etc.).

I didn't like the Codex's in either of the Dragon Age games, I hardly read them, they just felt like fast-food reading and I just ain't a fan of magically appearing information. Now a book, a book is there and it's practically saying, "read a book because you're a fearless bastard!" And then having to go across the country to find a second edition to a series of books. Nothing more satisfying.

I don't really want a magically updating codex, but guides and books like The Alchemists Formulary would be nice, books about the local wildlife etc.

I prefer books, as it makes sense that books are written by men, (or mer =P ) so therefore the information is possibly biased or may be incorrect. It adds to the immersion when the info you read could be true accounts of first hand witneses, or may just be embelished tales that made it to print.

I wouldn't mind seeing a book with details of various monsters ect. though, with little diagrams and details on their behaviour and such.

Yep. I'm perfectly fine with reading books or talking to scholars to get my lore-info. I don't need a codex
