Love the addtion of perks, but cant we find another term?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:56 am

In another topic, might be a couch, on 12 February 2011 - 06:02 AM, said:

"so Skyrim's combat skills including perks (which i'm sure Bethsda could have used a better name for since so many people seem to not understand what a perk is) are on par with Morrowind's, and just might be even deeper."

I totally agree - I hate the term "perk" It reminds me of FO, and seems so superficial, when it seems in Skyrim that it will actually be a huge factor in defining your character. Maybe they could use another term like expertise, talent, proficiency, aptitude or competence

Would love to hear others opinions about the use of the word perk to describe such a huge part of defining your character. And would love to hear alternative ideas of what you would call it.

NOTE - This is not a discussion of whether you like perks, but what they should be called in Skyrim.

I feel the same way: kind of think that "perk" may just be an internal term though, and in the actual game you won't see that word anywhere.

I can't think of any alternatives, though! :ahhh:

'Perks' is fine. I don't really care that there are some people who seem to hate anything vaguely related to fallout. Like Fallout was the only game who ever used a perk system in its character progression system.

....they've been saying "perk like" I don't think they have yet to put a label on them. Though even if it is true, who cares...perks work great for any RPG setting.

The name isn't a big deal. The world isn't going to end because of it :P

But I do agree that I don't like the name "perk" in TES.

Perk (=perquisite): http://www.thefreedictionary.com/perquisite

I'd prefer something else, to be honest. But I won't put a gun to my head if it's called perk...

To be honest, the word "perk" does not bother me at all. Any game I've played where you have "extra" skills or abilities are always referred to as "perks". (i.e. Call of Duty, Fallout, etc...) I think it would be a little odd to be called something else.

It certainly isn't a show stopper for me, I just wanted to see what others think. To me, the term just doesn't fit when it is such a core part of defining your character (assuming attributes are gone)

what about a ''Gain''

I don't see how that works in context, Talent's and Gain just don't seem to ring well in the elder scrolls series esp gain.

No if you call it a talent everyone will just say "NO WoW is a terrible game and even though that sounds like an opinion it is a fact because I say so."

It doesn't matter what you call it because someone will always take that word, google it + "video games" and then complain based on the results their search got them.

I don't really mind much myself. Perhaps "Tricks" as in "Tricks of the Trade", since you usually pick the perks based on what sort of weapon etc you like to use.

I don't have much of a problem with the word perk, but now that you mention it, I would probably prefer feats instead.

I don't think that works very well. Imagine going through a list of "gains"..... I don't like it.

Personally, I like the word - expertise. The way perks seem to be in Skyrim is the gain of a specific expertise through study or practice.

But it's only my opinion.

lets see what the thesaurus offers up.

Main Entry: perk
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: benefit
Synonyms: advantage, bonus, dividend, extra, fringe benefit, gratuity, gravy, lagniappe, largess, perquisite, plus, tip
Antonyms: disadvantage

Main Entry: act
Part of Speech: verb
Definition: do something
Synonyms: accomplish, achieve, begin, carry on, carry out, consummate, cook, create, develop, do, do a number, do one's thing, enforce, execute, function, get in there, go about, go for broke, go for it, go in for, go that route, go to town, intrude, knock off, labor, make progress, maneuver, move, officiate, operate, percolate*, perk*, perpetrate, persevere, persist, practice, preside, pursue, respond, serve, take effect, take part, take steps, take up, transort, undertake, work out
Notes: an act is the main dramatic unit and a scene is a division within an act

Yeah, perk is just fine.

I agree, to a point (it's not an in-world, in-character term, so it's hard to argue that it will matter in actual gameplay), although not because of Fallout. It's just not a particularly satisfying word. Perk. Perk. Perk!

Feat
Talent
Proficiency
Gift
Mastery

I'd prefer "Ability". I don't mind.

I don't have any problem with the word "perk" either. However, I think that I prefer feats as well...... It does sound good and it is still easily understood on what it is to be.

talent sounds good indeed.

Talent sounds....... ok. Not the greatest, but it's do-able. I think that the word talent is a little over-used though.

BREAK------------

I just love how we are debating on what to call a "perk" in Skyrim!
