I love the new Brotherhood of Steel (Hated the Cheesy FO3 Bo

Post » Sat May 01, 2010 6:45 am

I hated what they did with the BoS in FO3, they were too cheesy.. too "goody goody". I like what I've seen so far in New Vegas, seems more realistic of what theyd really be like. In a setting like that, no big military orginazation is going to act like White knights. In the end they are out for themselves. I really like how everything isn't so black and white, theres really no "good and evil".. its more of what you yourself consider to be good. Although anybody who doesn't think people who crucify other people are evil.. eh I dunno =P haha.

Great job Obsidian, this is what I've been waiting for. I really appreciate this game, seriously. FO3 was good but this is damn near perfect (if there were no bugs this game would definately deserve a 10/10 rating from every reviewer).

Just to prepare you, most people here are going to get onto you for calling them the "New" Brotherhood of Steel, since they're actually how the BoS were portrayed in Fallout 1 & 2.

Oh crap! I forgot to put in the box below the main topic text box (New BoS but at the same time the old BoS). I call it the new because on GFaqs all I see is people saying how they hate and dont understand the "new" BoS, which I find ridiculous considering how they were in the first games =\

Yes, it's good to seem them as they were in the originals. Sadly, I am working on destroying them as I speak.

I like the 'BOS' from 'Fallout 3' because they choose to help the people of the wasteland, other than just following orders and gathering and destroying the remaining tech.

Destroying? And the original BoS's goal is to fix the world in the long run. The eastern pussies wanted to save lives and not get anything accomplished.

The Followers of the Apocalypse are really really close to what the Eastern BOS were like, so anyone who liked them can just side with the Followers.

It is very tempting to destroy the Western BOS in this game though, and I probably will. I liked the Outcasts because while they were major [censored]s, they didn't try to hide it. Their motto was basically "Go die in a hole wastelander, I have tech to collect." The Western BOS, in this game at least, try to seem noble, but come off as trying, and failing, to hide their undeserved arrogance.

I actually liked the F3 Bos, I wouldn't have liked them if they turned every other fallout game into that but it was made very clear they were an offshoot and you would expect to have people like that in such a world, the outcasts though needed a bigger role I think though

I've actually destroyed all of them....twice. They were just ignorant, I hate ignorant people. So Rex, Boone, and I took em down a couple notches.

Agreed with OP.

So sick with the one-dimensional, holier-than-thou stereotype we got in F3.

Destroying? And the original BoS's goal is to fix the world in the long run. The eastern pussies wanted to save lives and not get anything accomplished.

Except that the easter BoS DID get stuff accomplished.

*gain complete control over then pentagon
*destroy an organization who would destroy the BoS
*obtain what is essentially a "super weapon" AND get it functioning.
*plan to repair said super weapon WITH upgrades withing a few months/years.
*obtained a very large amount of tech developed by the enclave
*creating new more advanced tech

all in all, even though they did act against their orders, they turned out fulfilling those orders better than they would have if they had followed them all along. Just look at the outcasts, they have what? A few suits of work power armor, a couple plasma weapons, and a broken missle launcher.

That being said, I do prefer the BoS in Vegas over the one in D.C. They feel more real to me, the easter BoS was too much of a stereotypical good guy.

The Brotherhood has always been a flawed organization who's founding theory was far loftier than their actions. They were isolationist and xenophobic yet continued with their military campaigns when it suited their purposes. They believed that because they survived the Great War that they could survive the wasteland while maintaining their strict code, not realizing that it doomed them to a slow death. Some have started to realize that they must adapt to the new world or ultimately perish, and you get to help shape their destiny, just as you did in Fallout 1, and to a lesser extent Fallout 2.

i like the bos in fallout 3, this one just felt stupid, just staying in their bunker not doing anything not recruiting thats what really broke it for me. i would have really liked a quest to try and change them.

Well, the Brotherhood was never about destroying tech.

That being said... I'm of two minds about the Brotherhood. On the one hand, MacNamarra is a lot more realistic in his goals than Lyons was... But I can't help but like Lyons because even though he's taken on an impossible job, he's done it for the right reasons, and I've always been fond of an interventionist Brotherhood ala Tactics.

I don't think the Lyons Brotherhood would fit in with this game; DC is a place for children, a place where the good guys are saints and the bad guys are clearly marked. The Mojave wasteland is a place for advlts. It's impossible to tell the bad guys from the good - Oh, sure, the Legion crucifies people, but they also make a very good argument as to why they do that. The NCR seems benevolent at first glance, but they're the same kind of nation state that led the world to ruin in the first place, and they're filled to the gills with corruption to boot. House says he has the best interests of New Vegas at heart... Yet he's obsessed with bringing back his pre-war wonderland. Yesman is a yes man, simply an enabler with no ability to decide whether a decision *should* be taken or not.

Heck, the Enclave is symbolic of this. In FO3, they were pretty clearly evil. Eden wanted a plan with no redeeming value, and Autumn was unnecessarily ruthless. In NV, we see the Enclave was composed of normal people, people who just want to do their jobs, people who disagree with the Enclave's aims and try to justify it to themselves why they're still helping the *E*. Just like real people.

I could tell you but then it'd be a spoiler. I did say was however. There's no organized Enclave presence anywhere in the wasteland...

If you want to know more, make sure you check out your various companions. One of them might know something.

I never said they were evil, I said they were [censored]s, a.k.a pricks. I like the Outcasts because they didn't hide that. I don't like the Western BOS because, as I said before, they're clearly trying and failing to hide a massive amount of arrogance that, given their current situation, they don't deserve to have.
