I love voiced protagonist

Post » Sun Jan 31, 2016 9:53 pm

It allows a much better interaction. I don't have to stare blankly at the NPC while they go on an don for 2-3 minutes. It feels very passive when the NPC talks to you while you take an on a more active role while talking to the the companions with the protagonist. I love voiced protagonist but the downside was more about the actor they hire. The male actor is a lot more inferior compared to the female version.

I liked it too. But this community is so toxic to any form of progress at all, so I am not surprised that people do not like it.

Meh, the male voicing is plenty good enough. I'm more upset they STILL have that horrible pick up and move animation, esp for corpses, and pretty much useless combat in 3rd person.

@ Twisted,

don't go by ANY official forum, it's always where a mass amount of trolls come out to whine. Look at the HUGE number of Very Positive reviews on Steam, and you'll see FO4 has over 7 times as many reviews as FO3.

A handful of retro style fanatics repeating the same old gripes over and over are never going to convince me it's majority opinion.

I love the voiced protagonist but I don't love the vague and IMO inferior dialogue options.

If we could have the best of both worlds that would be perfect

I also think a second voice actor for both male and female characters would be better

Time for another one of these threads?

I would have preferred the silent first person dialog from previous games.

I like the voiced protagonist too! http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/3249/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout4%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D3249%26preview%3D&pUp=1

The voice actor they chose has too high of a voice for me to relate to him, especially when he makes the snarky remarks. Raising the pitch of his voice makes him feel more youthful.

The same can be said for the female voice.

You'll get polarized opinions on this subject because traditionally, Bethesda protagonists have been silent which left the protagonist's voice to whatever the player made up in their head.

It's just to balance out whenever people complain about silent protagonist on a list of why Fallout 4 didn't win GOTY. I don't think voiced protagonist is one of them. Just wanna voice them for Beth to know so that they will implement it in the future.

For gods sake no. The voiced protagonist did too many bad things to the design. Bad chosen actors, heavy reduced amount of choices to limit cost and game size, destroying imersion for players that want to play "themself" in the game - no voiced protagonist can hold up with my own voice.

Adding unnecessary limitation is not progress. No voice allowed one to imagine their character, you can't really do that with Joe-average we have voicing the male.

Nah, it allows more interaction with the world for me. It allows characters to interact with the world more instead of being passively speaking to. It's always breaking immersive with silent protagonist because it doesn't seem like a real conversation.

Limitations, cheap game size, are you guys friggin kidding me? Literally ALL the changes that have been complained about are either to streamline for better game flow and less grinding, or actually ADDING a LOT of content. The settlement building feature in itself took a huge amount of time and play testing, and the only reason some complain about it is they have no clue how to use it well.

Again, the over 7:1 ratio of Very Positive reviews for FO4 vs FO3 on Steam make it obvious which is the more popular and well received title.

I guess having a lack of nuanced and detailed options to dialogue is fun then? I don't even know why Bethesda experimented with this; by the current bench mark of Skyrim, having a voice-acted Khajiit in Elder Scrolls 6 will be racist in a way that only George Lucas's Star Wars prequels achieved.

An utter waste of time, a bad idea, just no.

The settlement building feature is not the topic here, but people mostly complain about it as it does not interact with the world in any sense, the settlements are closed cells on their own with the world/people outside not even recognizing them. So beside a timesink factor the implentation of the settlement building feature is like a tiny second game without any affects on the real gameworld.

And now back to topic.

When people talk about previous titles being better they refer to New Vegas.

That is irrelevant, just because fallout 4 is more popular than fallout 3 for "some" people doesn't mean that they like the voiced protagonist mechanic, I like fallout 4 a lot but still would rather have the dialogue system from previous games. What we currently have is good, but comes at a cost that kind of ruins it all.

Also not everyone uses steam so that 7:1 ratio doesn't hold much weight

Yeah, I do, because maybe I'm not you, and so you shouldn't apply your view on the rest of the world. :)

I am only putting in facts like the heavy reduced amount of conversation content while you just represent your personal opinions that you like the voice.

Well i am right there with you. I enjoy the voiced protagonist and it really added to the mainstory of the game, which was important to me. I wish the dialogue choices had been abit better, but first time using the new system for Bethesda, need time to perfect it and make it better. We'll see in the coming DLC if they fine tune it abit.

Nuanced and detailed options in dialogue have nothing to do with voiced protagonist, seem more like dialogue wheels.

Facts that have nothing to do with voiced dialogues rather than dialogue wheel. ;)

I agree, but think that the reason for a single voice actor is one of development cost. A second choice would be nice, but I like the one provided well enough and much better than silence.

It has everything to do with that, in order to make full VO feasible monetarily or otherwise (VO actor/actress's schedule, etc.) Bethesda clearly couldn't accommodate all the options that many many gamers would have appreciated. Lack of nuance, lack of detail, failed experiment - and also nothing to do with the lack of description on the dialogue wheel which, you're right, also svcks.

Yeah I am also pretty sure development costs are the issue as well.

It's just having the same voice for your character can get really old and for some people (like me) it's hard to imagine that the character I've created would use "that" voice

Although having a voice as opposed to silence is nice, it just breaks immersion for me and has come at a pretty big cost
