I'm Loving No Fast Travel

Post » Tue Aug 13, 2013 3:00 am

I'm about 6 hours into my new character. Ive been to Helgen, Riverwood, Whiterun, Iverstead, High Hrothgar, Riften and Ustengrav. I must say this is the first character ive played without no fast traveling and i cant believe ive never done this sooner. My god, the game is so much more enjoyable. Traveling by foot during the day, stopping at an inn for the night and continuing my journey the next day.

Welcome to the wonderful world of role playing, You could spend a thousand hours playing the game and miss 1/2 of what it has to offer by fast travelling.

Once I quit fast travelling in Oblivion I was discovering places that I had never seen in 1000+ hours of gameplay, Skyrim is the same deal - you will find so many more memorable locations on foot. :D

I would do this, but when you are doing the thief guild radiant quests it is just not a fun thing to do

Walking up to High Hrothgar gives you the Voice of the Sky power.
Which you don't get by fast-travelling...
Have you got some kind of mod, DDovah - or are you just on the Willpower plan?

I'm looking for a mod that enables fast-travel only to the nine major towns (plus I guess Dawnguard and Volkihar).
There would be a small, glowing (Daedric?) pillar in each town at the travel point...
Would therefore get you fairly close to anywhere - but you'd have to walk from there.
Plus, no carts to take you where you've never been before! You walk.

Yeah no fast-travel is awesome. It really enables a whole lot of the game experience...
But willpower is not my strongest point.

I would have to disagree(remember this is all about personal preference so don't get mad bra). I'm actually doing those now and I still enjoy the pleasure of walking to and from my destinations.
Some people are just(not sayn you) in to much of a hurry to enjoy traveling by foot. Like my brother, he simply gets frustrated with a distance of anything more than a few minuets walk. I love all the things that others would miss by using FT.

I just see no point in using ft, it's not like I'm going to lose the quest by taking my time. And I'll most likely get a few radient quests that I would have missed by FTing.

I'm curious though, which one of the quests are you on that makes FT a necessity for you? As in where do you have to travel to and from?

Usually I'd agree with you. I'm definitely not grinding at all with this character. Definitely taking my time. And so far being only 6 hours into this game I'm already seeing things I've never seen before. My god the scenery is truly beautiful.

I play on PS3 so no mods.

I've never yet fast traveled in Skyrim. I don't use my map so fast travel is not an option for me anyway.

That's a very interesting way of playing. I'm doing a combination of using the map only to get an idea from point A to point B, and also wandering around aimlessly. Sometimes that's the best way to see all of skyrim. You never know what's around the corner.

Fast travel is so much more fun, in my opinion. If you focus on trying to role play, every experience brings you deeper into the immersion.

I'm actually tempted to give that a go myself with a new character.

I'm trying a compromise - carriages are ok, but no FT. This really opened my eyes to how remote and dangerous Winterhold is (no carriage there). Also, there's no carriage from Falkreath but the terrain around there is not nearly as dangerous as Winterhold so hoofing it to Riverwood and then Whiterun is fine.

I know what you mean about the Thieve's Guild radiant quests, LordBhaal. I thought it was kind of a drag to do the required 20 until I read about how you get access to TG safe for free after you finish 120!! jobs for Vex and Delvin. Man, who would bother?!

Up until this character I fast traveled a lot. I couldn't see myself trekking from Riften to Castle Volkihar. But now it seems right. Like paying attention to the time more, stopping at inns for rest, drink and food. It just adds to the whole adventure experience.

Now I'm thinking the only fast travel ill do is with the TG. Again, traveling from Riften to Markarth just to pick someone's pocket is a little too obsurd for my taste.

I tried but I got lost simply trying to go to Riften from Whiterun. I tried going through Helgen but got lost and then pissed. Even with the road signs it still happens to me. So now I just pretend that I bought one from the first shop I find, I just place 100 gold in a chest that the shop owns.
It really doesn't break my immersion because I would think my character would know about a simple tool like map.

+1

I prefer to walk whenever possible for the immersion except in certain situations like this:

That trip is tedious, once I unlock High Hrothgar with a character then I never walk up the 7000 steps again.

You must have come across other tombs and caves along the way at those destinations, correct?

The roads are the most enjoyable part of travelling on foot, because of the unexpected encounters.

Thalmor agents, bandits desguised as Imperials, a DB assassin and so on.

Good for you. Hope you have some interesting times out there

When you have the coin and if it fits with your character/head-canon, why not consider investing in a horse? If you mod, then add Convenient Horses and saddle up with a follower just in case you find an interesting site to explore. There is nothing like riding home on a clear night under the stars.

It would take for ever to get where you originally set out for if you did.
When I first got rid of FT I literally had to stop myself from getting distracted by all the locations as I hardly ever got to my goal location within a reasonable time. There's always just one more place to explore.

Wandering around the outskirts of Winterhold and around the mountain passes in the Jerral mountains is pretty awesome. That Mountain chain in the south is just completely inhospitable besides the 2 Roads leading out and into Cyrodill.

I had one horse. I did the favor for Sadr from Riften. Got a horse for free then made my way to Windhelm. From there went to Dawnstar. I can't believe it's taken me this long to play like this. I think the only time I'll fast travel is for radiant quests from the Volkihar, TG and DB.

I refuse to fast travel, I will use service travel though if I'm in a hurry.
