In loving memory of Decent

Post » Sat Apr 18, 2009 12:11 am

Well I've completely forgotten about decent for the last 9 years until I found this instruction manual. I just want to say Decent II was the most fun multilayer game I've ever had the most fun on. That's saying a lot (wow, halo series, counter strike, etc). What I remember most about this game was how it felt like the first solid competitive shooter, how underground it was, and the wonderful community. I'm sad to hear about the death of D4. It will always be remembered to me as to what really started my passion for video gaming. I know the thought of making another Decent game wouldn't be the most profitable, which svcks. This is Quoted out of my Decent 2 instruction manual. "As a company of fanatic gamers, we love the idea of gamers all over the world tapping into cyberspace to see, touch and feel our latest games. No hype, no marketing campaign; just great games."

You can still play Descent, D2 and D3 on newer machines. Use DX Rebirth. It's great. And Welcome Back. Beta tester for:Descent 3 1.5 Patch, C&C Generals, Independance War 2,Starfleet Command 2,Settlers IV,Tzar,Allegiance,Starfleet Command (Alpha & Beta),MAX 2,Defiance

What do you mean D4 is dead? Is it?
I remember reading on all these threads that gamesas is planning to go ahead with D4.
But maybe I missed something in a thread announcing that...

D2 Xl is also another option, it's just more different than regular D2. It requires a better PC to run. There is no D4. The D4 that was started ages ago turned into Red Faction. Beta tester for:Descent 3 1.5 Patch, C&C Generals, Independance War 2,Starfleet Command 2,Settlers IV,Tzar,Allegiance,Starfleet Command (Alpha & Beta),MAX 2,Defiance

Everytime I see Red Faction, I see the title get replaced by DESCENT 4 in the classic font and then I'm like "Dammit!" If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

I use both to be honest D2X-XL and DXX-rebirth are both two great projects, if you prefer old style play Rebirth but if you want advanced graphics and nice ber looking high res details D2X-XL is really nice, version 1.15.125 runs dead stable here even via the network, it's really good, @ Diedel some just don't know what they are missing out on mate, really I loved it keep up the good work.

To be honest both projects have their issues but that does not mean they both should be over ranted, imo both rock and we oughta be happy that these two projects are keeping the Descent spirit alive, of course there is Descent 3 also but for the ones that prefer Descent 1 and 2 DXX-Rebirth & D2X-XL are very good sollutions thx to these projects you can play these games on your new gen systems, that is what they give in advantage over D3, D3 still looks and plays best on a 3dfx Voodoo 3/4 and 5 since it was made to be run in the 3dfx Glide API, OpenGLa nd Direct3D were just added for mild support, nothing more, OpenGL like Direct3D have banding issues and other rendering issues on ATi like NVIDIA hardware, on a 3dfx Voodoo5 based VGA card you get perfect image quallity and no rendeig issues whatso ever the Fusion engine was made for the 3dfx Avenger Rasterizer whichwas used for the 3dfx Voodoo3 and Velocity 100/200 series. I'm curious do you get bump mapping in D3 on glide?
I've heard it was only on Direct3D (which is why I run it under Direct3D -- bump mapping slows down the framerate enough to make the fusion chargeable, seeing as the framecap switch doesn't work). When I die I want to be dissected by some mad genius and used in one of his evil schemes.

Yes the 3dfx Voodoo4 and 5 cards can do bump mapping in Glide 32 Bit which can only be used with a ebta driver from AmigaMerlin.

the Voodoo5 cards [not Voodoo4] also allow Motion Blur in Glide mode + Super Sampled Rotated Grid FSAA x2 and x4 as where the mighty Voodoo5 6000 Protoypes also allow Super Sampled Rotated Grid FSAA x8 mode :)
here the FSAA tab of the Voodoo5 6000 I once had in the past:

And here the card it's self in the test system an AthlonXP 2700+, EPoX EP-8K3A+ & 3x 512MB PC-3200 CL2 @ PC-2700 & 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 AGP 128MB Rev.A 3700 + PCI-Rework:

Here pics of the card it's self, it's sheer size is 32.5CM incl the extended support bracket, the black brick is the Voodoo Volts a 60 watt PSU, the card does not need that , since it has been upgraded with an Internal Power Hookup which only uses 55 watts:

Ah well I sold this card 4 years ago for about 1700 euro's and yeah someday I will reobtain one for more Descent 3 fun  Holder Of The World's Largest Descent / Freespace Collection:
