Low FPS on an average computer

Post » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:10 pm

Hello. I'm pretty sure this computer should run Oblivion smoothly, as it's fitting the recommended system requirements:

Intel Core 2 Duo - 2,3GHz
1GB DDRII RAM 800MHz
nVidia 7600GS (the required is 7800, but from what I've heard this graphic card should be able to run this game on ~50FPS)
Windows 7 x86

I've reinstalled the system a while ago, it's a month or two, defragmented and scanned for viruses and spyware yesterday. Installed vanilla Oblivion 20 minutes ago.
The fact is I'm having ~20FPS at outside, ~15FPS at cities and about 25FPS at caverns on medium details - 1440x900, everything on medium, all shadows turned off, AA off, HDR on.
This really svcks - yeah I know, my computer isn't the best at all, but on the release date of Oblivion, 7600GS wasn't a cheap graphic card and the computer wasn't for 100 bucks, too. I've read somewhere that some changes in config file should make the FPS really higher, but I don't know what to change. If anyone can explain, I'll be grateful.

Oh and I really don't want to use things like Oldblivion.

Thanks in advance.

Well the real minimum requirements for the game is a Nvidia 6800 for basic medium quality. 1GB of RAM on Vista/7 for the game is kind of low, seeing as the OS takes up atleast 700MB of RAM with AV and other assorted startup software. I would never expect that card to get 50FPS in the wilderness. Try lowering the resolution and it should help the FPS a bit. Close out all processes that arent essential, including your anti virus, that will help with the RAM problem.

Windows 7 shouldn't be problem, it takes almost the same RAM as Windows XP. Actually gonna update RAM to 4GB, but I think 1GB is just fine. The graphic card should handle the game, as it's been released after Oblivion was.

A lot of video cards where released after the game came out, but its just not going to max the game. To give a comparison: the Xbox uses about the equivalent of the Nvidia 7900GTX and it only runs the game at about high settings and at a lower resolution. Did you try to lower the resolution to something a bit lower to help out with FPS?

Yeah, with many perfomance plugins and 1024x768 resolution, I maxed the FPS to unstable 30 outside. I guess it's my limit until I buy the new RAM.

The bare minimum RAM requirement is 1GB for 32-bit and 2GB for 64-bit. THAT is NOT the same requirement as Windows XP (which is 128MB). I strongly recommend that you increase your RAM.

Windows 7's memory management system is different than XP's. At the desktop you may not use much RAM because you only have 1GB, but it isn't going to cut it when playing a game. You will start using page file like mad and it will cut performance. You will experience this by a lot of hard drive activity.

No way. I have an 8800GT and I only get 25-35 outside at a resolution of 1920 X 1200. You're expecting far too much from that card.

More RAM isn't going to help you that much. You're not going to see that much more performance out of that card.

Another vote for an extra 1GB of RAM, also try using the quiet feet mod if you are not already using it.

Not to dogpile... :P

But yeah, get some more RAM, even if it's only one more GB.

Should yield a dramatic improvement, and not just for one game, nor even just games in general. Seriously.

Additionally, if you get a chance to upgrade the graphics card, I'd recommend doing so, for the sake of whatever games you might play, this one included.

You think 30 is unstable I'm fine with 20 in the wilderness(25 in combat but my fps go up to 30 and down to 19 randomly so my average in the wilderness is 23 to 28)and 12 in the imperial city.

An extra gig of RAM will NOT drastically improve performance. It's true that a Win 7 installation should have at least 2GB to run efficiently, however RAM upgrading is no substitute when the real weak link is the GPU.

It may net you a few extra FPS, however it will not be a miracle cure.

I agree. More RAM will help mainly in those areas where the bottleneck has to do with CPU processing, not just graphics. This means areas where there are alot of NPCs in the area, like the Market Square district or large battles. It will have virtually no effect when you're in the wilderness though, that's pretty much dependent on the strength of your video card.

I think I have the same problem or situation with you. I have a phenom x3 8650 2.31 ghz, a nvidia 9500 gt 1gb and 2gb ram in win xp sp3. I'm playing it at 480x640 screen and everything on default on video setting as in everything is off on video effects, and its only running at a dismal 10 to 15 fps in the sewer. Can anybody please help in increasing my fps.
