Low Intelligence dialog returning?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 9:20 am

Is the latest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6yt-43Vp1M hinting at a possible return of low Intelligence dialog? It would pretty cool given the voiced protagonist, though I somehow doubt this will happen.

Even the original games struggled with low intelligence dialogue, Fallout 3 and New Vegas barely had any. It'd be a shame if it's completely gone but it's always seemed like an afterthought, you get to pick a couple of dumb lines but the rest of the time your character still sounds reasonably intelligent.

True, though it would be a shame not to utilize low intelligence with voiced protagonists. Bethesda has to know this is a popular playstyle at this point.

Consider the noteworthy amount of time the main VAs have workt on there lines, it's not to far fetched, time will tell.

I don't think so, especially with how SPECIAL is set up - it's not as crippling to leave a stat at 1 like it was in the first two Fallouts. All of the dialog we've seen in the gameplay footage was with a guy at like 3 intelligence too, I think. That, and the logistics and game balance of idiot gameplay. I think at best we'll have some Intelligence checks where we'll say something comically clueless if we don't meet the requirement.

It'll be tough to be a bumbling fool considering you've served time in the army and were intelligent enough to learn how to use power armor.

The PC also managed to seduce someone of the opposite six and have a kid while also maintaining what looks to be a middle class household.

Canonically, you're already not an idiot; low intelligence dialogue would be impossible. Small misunderstandings perhaps, with the opposite being true for someone with a high intelligence score.

I don't think we'll be shouting ice cream at robots though.

I see the attributes in FO4 as points above the average for a human, so for instance 1 intelligence is slightly above average intelligence. Otherwise, how could someone with a luck of 1, aka 'never won heads or tails', be a fortune finder? Or a character with 2 intelligence, aka 'barely able to tie his own shoelaces', be a medic?

So with that in mind, no, it wouldn't make sense to have bumbling fool speech for 1 intelligence.

'1' in any attribute is not zero.

The character builder in FNV is a little misleading - its descriptions of Intelligence 4-1 of: Knucklehead/cretin/vegetable/sub-brick

overplay the differentiation from horrible to awesome.

It is in fact from meh to awesome, and that's a significant difference.

The other stats are the same, with 1's you can carry, you do have health, you do have action points, not none, just less.

As for low intelligence, well I simply don't see the protagonist, even with an intelligence of 1

falling into the category of intellectual disability, for a whole host of good reasons.

In short, an Intelligence of 1 would be a protagonist slow on the uptake, missing (as the SPECIAL video says) opportunities,

and that doesn't particularly require dialogue changes, perhaps an IQ of 80,

so not the rather outdated and stereotypical gibbering moron, but simply just below the borderline of average intelligence (IQ 90-110).

I'd see in general terms, SPECIAL increases of 10 points of IQ per point, so 1=80, 3-5 is average intelligence IQ 90-110, 8-10 genius levels of 140-160.

Personally, I think voiced protag makes it even less likely that there'd be low-int dialogue. 1) that's effectively another "voice" to record all the lines in; 2) having an actual audible voice doing "slow dumb idiot" dialogue (as opposed to just reading some text) would probably come across as stereotyped and offensive, especially if the lines were written either poorly or attempting to be "witty".

Given it's Beth writing it, I think we should be asking if average intelligence dialogue is returning.

I doubt it. If the Fallout Shelter SPECIAL scores are anything to go by, 2 is probably the new human average, since new Vault Dwellers in that game only rarely have a score above 2. And 1 would just be below average, like Forrest Gump smart. He can still talk normal and be successful, just isn't very booksmart.

The only thing that has me worried about the game at all is the voice protagonist. Not only is it incredibly unlikely they'll have dumb dialogue, did they do an entire set of evil dialogue to go with the good?

Dumb dialogue can be extremely entertaining to listen to sometimes and have you rolling in the floor, but I think for my first play through I'm going with option B which is a higher IQ for the benefit of the skill points since there's no telling what changes have been made in the game overall, or what skills will be most profitable to surviving in it.

I really, really would love dumb dialogue.. Especially since it's all voiced now. It would be pretty hilarious simply because of all the work the voice actors would have had to do just to make dumb dialogue. Imagine spending days just saying things like "Duhhhhh", "hmmmm?" "Me like pizza!" "You go now" "Me not know thingy" "What me have in pants?" "You scary man, me no like you!"

However, seeing that we have a lower amount of stat points this time around.. a lot more people will be min/maxing meaning they'll be sticking 1's in a lot of slots. If intelligence of 1 means that you're a complete idiot.. comparably, a strength of 1 would mean that you can barely lift your arms.. and a charisma of 1 would mean you should be driving people away with your horrible charisma. I just don't think 1 as a stat is really going to be as bad as all that anymore. 1 is kind of the new 3.

Low intelligence spoken dialogue might be funny for about 5 minutes then after the first hour the novelty would wear thin and after that an outpouring of bad design posts would stack up on the forums.

I really doubt it. They would have to write new dumb dialog for the MC, then have the MC's voice actors record that dialog, then they would have to write all the NPC reactions to the MC's dumb dialog and have all the NPC voice actors record the new reactions to that dialog. It wouldn't be worth all that time, money, and effort. Doing this in the old Fallout games was much easier because almost all of the dialog was text. Very little was voice acted, so they just had to change the text, and very little new voice work had to be recorded.
