Low level cap? Easy earning weapons? Good.

In SOME shooters, you have to grind to get anything interesting leaving the focus of the game on unfun grinding instead of fun complex and skillful gameplay. Also, I notice that BRINK is balanced fairly well with supply restoring, weapon reloading, and most actions all with the right time delays.

Grinding is bad, gameplay is good. Hating BRINK for lessening the grind is like hating games for being fun.

Naw, dude, I only like games that take me three months to hit level cap, games that offer in game benefits for real money, and in game hats unlocked through some sort of crate/key system.

No but kudos, SD, you made leveling entirely about the learning curve and not about some unobtainable number to impress jags online.

I agree OP, I hate grinding for anything because most times, it feels like a job and not like fun.

I partially agree. The level cap in brink is almost like a tutorial in the sense.

It's a love/hate for me, but they give me the option to make a new character so it's fine for me

I like the fact that I'm level 13 on PS3 playing against bots, and it took until now to realise that once I break level 10, turning the difficulty to hard makes the game playable.

I can't win on Medium, Easy is boring and still unbeatable in some missions, but on Hard, it's fine.

So answer me this how do you "Rank" up a character and not just "Level" them up?

Rank one is levels 1-4
Rank two levels 5-9
Rank three levels 10-14
Rank four levels 15-19
Rank 5 is 20

Borderlands is just like that, especially when you are two levels away from being a high enough level to obtain that badass gun you've been holding for 6 1/2 levels. You got to
Go around completing mission that are far as hell away. And then you have to hunt for enemies that give a good amount of XP and, it's just a pain. I'm glad the level cap is small. It gives you another reason to make multiple characters

Can you please elaborate on how it makes it more playable? Does it enhance AI or something? I may try this today. There is one mission I just can't beat, and I've tried it on medium and easy, and I'm on level 13.

Just posted a thread about it, but basically, friendly AI is competent on Hard. Instead of, well, braindead at best.

I disagree after fully leveling you don't get a sense of achievement anymore and it doesn't distinguish between the good and the really good players. I think they should up it loads and just have a small reward for each level like specific gun skins or armor unlocks.

I agree with the OP - Many games today are far too obsessed with creating grinding treadmills for unlocks and achievements to mask the shallowness of the overall gameplay. No one cared about "grinding" in the big multiplayer games years ago (e.g., Tribes 2, RTCW, etc.), especially because it just creates an individualistic mentality that detracts from the teamwork aspect.

Levels and ranks tell you basically nothing about player skill in almost any online game (there are a few exceptions).

In 99% of cases, all they tell you is how EXPERIENCED a player is.

if a terrible player has loads of free time, they can be level 150 or whatever in their FPS of choice when a level 20 player who's good, but has less free time will only barely beat them - not because the high-level player is better, but because the game lets them unlock all the best gear because they play it so much.

Kudos Brink for making the leveling and weapon unlocks separate - you get good weapons by being decent at the game. You get your abilities by getting a basic level of experience.

And even without completing the challenges and unlocking things, you're given enough weapons and abilities to compete fairly with the players you're being matched against.

Agreed. I'd also like to add that if you really need to have a steep grinding treadmill of unlocks in order to enjoy a game, are you really even enjoying it?

I always find it strange, that high level players got all the good stuff and the noobs got nothing. So a good player would always destroy the new players. In brink you only have to do the tutorials and have access to all weapons! Thats graet- :celebration:

I have to agree; the weapons unlock through the challenges because those are concerted tutorials in how to play the game. Most people wouldn't bother playing through them if weapons unlocked through levels or other means.

You get a fair amount of cool stuff just from investing a few points in each class, which allows you to do the more advanced stuff you think your class should do. Prior to that you're getting the hang of the basics.

So it's a nice, brief treadmill that builds up the game and its processes for you without just dropping you in. So I don't mind the levels or the brevity through which they are played.

Explain your logic behind this statement.

I wouldn't feel right attempting to tear it down without hearing your reasons, but as of right now, I'm quietly confident that you're wrong.

I like this too.

I wish that I could see my friends characters though not in game... (basically I wish there was a lobby system)

Even CoD allows noobs to have powerful weapons. See, noob-tube. Also, it's not like its hard to get the weapons either. I don't see the problem. It makes it somewhat more balanced.

I love that my nub casualness is rewarded for now. You figure right around the time you figure out the game you're level 10...then you're level 20 by time you're really good. Hopefully they have some more levels just waiting in the wings for those who want to be UBAR later on.
