Low Luck Characters

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 3:52 pm

So I want to make a pure explosives build, and seeing as they don't need luck for criticals I was going to leave it at 1 (2 after an implant - I want my character to be as healthy as possible so endurance will be 9 so I may as well get the luck implant). However explosives seem to be expensive, and seeing as I won't be raking in the caps from casinos, will this just make the character tedium to play? I'm going to be siding with Mr. House and nuking both the NCR and the Legion for roleplay and for the nifty unique grenade rifles (also I won't be using Vulpes and the NCR guy who meets you outside the Lucky 38 to reset reputation either) so I guess I'll get some loot from hit squads to sell, but I'm not sure if this would be enough.

So, in general, how have you found playing a low luck character in the past? And more specifically, is there anything I should bear in mind playing this character?

EDIT: Also is there anyway to get a good supply of stealth boys outside the Legion? Planting explosives seems like a fun idea so I would mind a fair few stealth boys for this purpose.

EDIT2: Actually never mind, I re-worked the original concept and binned off the high charisma (it's now 4) and high-ish agility (I was originally going after silent running, but now want bother with stealth now so I'll go with an agility of 4 too) and that allowed me to swap some points into luck (it's 7, 8 post-implant which will be enough to clean out the casinos). Still feel free to discuss the questions if anyone still wanted to.

I know that you don't need any help with your Luck now but you asked for a good place to get Stealth Boys outside of the Legion Safehouse. The best place besides inside said safehouse is the REPCONN Test Sight from the quest "Come Fly With Me". Make sure you have your Lockpick skill high enough to at least be able to get into an EASY lock as both the door to the room and the safe with the Stealth Boys require it. Also make sure to check the body of any dead Nightkin you come across or that your yourself kill in the REPCONN Test Sight basemant as they can sometimes be carrying a Steath Boy as well.

Good Luck with your Explosions based character! :fallout:

For explosives, use the Annabelle and Mercy. Frags help too. It is on the expensive side, but ammo will become more accessible later on once you get access to the Boomer armory. Put points into Barter to reduce the costs.

Use Annabelle, she's a hoot.

For some reason Annabelle's explosive range is larger than God himself so you'll often kill yourself randomly while firing rockets at people yards away. And yet you can't help but love her because she's so hysterical and hurts so gewd. <3 :fallout:

Luck is a pretty poor stat for explosives, considering that the main benefit of Luck is a higher chance of critically hitting.

I go absolute nuts on Luck with my guns build.

Without the presence of critical mishaps, Luck isn't as valuable as it was in, say, Fallout 1 and 2. It still has it's place, though, in New Vegas more than ever when it comes to gambling, a number of conversational challenges, the bonuses to every statistic, and critical modifiers.

But explosives doesn't need crit modifiers, and everything else is optional.

Seems like Annabelles peoples' top choice, I'll try to pick it up ASAP. And I know luck isn't important for explosives, but at least with a Luck of 8 it will keep the caps flowing. Thanks for the advice all.

It is fun to play as a high luck character using guns and energy weapons so you crit constantly (not to mention easily getting banned from every casino).

Best way to get more ammo is to rob the Boomers blind.

Only thing I see with low luck is that enemies are gonna hit ya more often.

Love watching a grp of raiders come up and about to surround me and im reloading and its gets stuck and one of the guys gets a grenade out and......drops it at his feet and blows the whole grp up.
