Lycanthropy in Skyrim

Post » Fri Aug 06, 2010 10:36 pm

In a way I would like to see lycanthropy and vampirism or any other 'state changing' abilities to be treated as a skill that levels up the more you use it. If it is merely a greater power or spell then there isn't much depth to the concept.
If treated as a skill, especially as skills are being done in Skyrim you have a fundamental change to your character. Couple this with the new dynamic story and you can have something truly profound. When treated as a skill lycanthropy would obviously grow stronger the more you use it. Perks would allow you customize the power as well, allowing you to choose to stabilize the power or become more destructive. Either way there is a story element about the type of character you choose to play.
I'm imagining myself playing a character and there being some sort of quest or dynamic event that leaves me a werewolf. All of a sudden my character is in a truly desperate position, I'm going crazy, i don't have complete control of my body and I may be being hunted. I can choose to fight to rid myself of the curse, master it, or embrace it. The point being the more you use it, the stronger it becomes, the more - or less - control you have over it. Maybe there is no cure, you just have take the mastery path and suppress it for good. Either way, it is something that has a profound and lasting effect on your character - not merely a spell or greater power.

I'd love to see a system like this implemented but I doubt it, even if lycanthropy is in. It would really compliment my roleplay.

Sound like good ideas kind of like a community. All werewolvse are known to be social creatures / live in packs? I had the idea that they were pretty solitary which I kind of like the thought of better.

Well, as I mentioned before. There was a pack of Lycanthropes hiding out in a fort in Daggerfall. And also Hircine had his pack of werewolves. It's possible that some werewolves can run with tribe members, but when Hircine come's to the picture, he is the divine leader of all things werebeast.

You know, that might work. It would be similar to the black talon company in fallout 3 trying to hunt you for a contract. So basically bethesda has experience doing something like that.

or both. ;]
I love the idea of having Lycanthropy in Skyrim, It just gets so dull being just a vampire all the time.

but what would happen if you had Lycanthropy and contracted Vampirism? would you become a monstrosity or would the Lycanthropy kill the Vampirism or the other way around, or you had to choose between one of them?

I think that it wouldn't be possible, the Vampire would likely detect you as a Lycan and seeing their oh so friendly relationship in the past, I think he'd either kill you or pass you by.

I would like the ability to infect others with Sanies Lupinus. Radient AI would dictate how individual NPCs deal with being infected whether it be they get themselves cured or let the transformation come from either desire or ignorance.

I think that the vampire faction should be wealthy and the were clans live in hovels and such

I don't necessarily think that to be the case...I could see a pack of Nordic werewolves residing in a great mead-hall, part of a nobleman's berserker or ulfhednar bodyguard...

Yeah, I get this kind of thought too, (If I may interject.)

I see a small village out of the way, hidden in the shadow of a mountain pass, a main hall, possible dungeon/keep nearby, and a well organized society that operates and trades with other villages, but also launches raiding parties now and again onto other villages? or on the Vampires.

There was a werewolf pack in Daggerall.

lol i swear you and daggerfall keep coming back to bight me in a$$ .

i guess alot didnt get transfered over from daggerfall to bloodmoon as far as werewolves go.

im ok with were clans but i dont want it to turn into underworld.... what i would like to see though is for the were clans to fight each other. who is better the werebear or werewolf?
that i think would be cool to let the different vampire clans fight eachother and the different were clans fight eachother.

Now the bear is a creature that typically lives alone...Bears with the exception of the great salmon ruts hardly ever socialize and are in fierce competition when they meet...Even in J.R.R. Tolkien's book 'The Hobbit' Bjorn the Berserker lived alone and would only meet and ally with other were-bears on very special occasion...

Yes...But I think transformations should happen during the full-moon phases of the dual lunar cycles...

I vote yes for werewolf tribes. But no to war. I totally agree.

EDIT: There should be two tranformations every in-game month. Since there are two full moons. It's better than every night. See, some people will have to do quests at night. We can't do that as a werewolf.

W & V old chum...Good of you to return...I would like to see quests for werewolves that are a mix of some having the necessity of taking place in human form while others absolutely require the beast within...

THanks. Good to be back. And I think Bethesda can pull it off. In Bloodmoon, when I tried to enter Castle Kaarstag, a message popped up saying: "Only a werewolf can enter." or some restrictions when trying to get the Totem of Claw and Fang "Those who are cursed by the shadow of the Beast may not open this chest". Thing's like this is interesting and can make alot of cool scenarios. And some advantages and disadvantages.

Yes...I waited until I was in werewolf form, entered the castle, waited until I was in human form again...And...Looted my little black heart out...
I can agree with your idea though...

Yea, I did that too haha. If some of those things could be incorporated into Skyrim, it would be some interest gameplay.

I imagine that Hircine would want us to hunt and kill things. He would probably reward us with greater power or perhaps secrets or he may even have interest in the Civil War. Unless the Lycanthrope population has increased significantly over the last 200 years, maybe Hircine will be pissed that his children have been slaughtered and decide to task us with infecting others.

I think it should stay classic, if only to support the lore around it. If it was a greater power there wouldn't be any restrictiona nd you would go the entire game as a werewolf(or other type of creature) and never shapeshift, but possibly still have advantages. Kinda wired IMO.
