Lynges Thieves Highway for OOO. Which .esp or both?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:19 pm

Hi, I'm now in the process of following TESIV:POSItive's Walkthrough on ?MMMforOOO Installation Guide (OMOD version). I want to use Lynges Thieves Highway for OOO that I found on tesnexus. In the description its states under requirements that the original Lynges Thieves Highway is needed; the description then goes on to say "use this .ESP instead of the original one included in Lynges Thieves Highway.".

So which do I use the original AND the OOO version or just the OOO one? It says the first .esp is required but the second .esp replaces it?!?

link to Lynges Thieves Highway for OOO:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25383 (which in turn has a link for the original Lynges Thieves Highway)

Any help would be great, thanks.

You most probably only need one ESPs. Check the file sizes. Replacement ESPs are of similar size, while patches are usually very small compared to the master file.

Another reason you might need the original one is for possible new meshes/textures that are being added and are not in the OOO patched esp file.

Cheers for the info guys, :goodjob:

There are no meshes/textures in either download.

original is 15.1KB, the OOO version is 15.2KB.

So I guess the latter this a replacement then and I shouldn't use the original?

Potentially inaccurate way to determine patches from replacers :)
"The Mystery of the Dulan cult" has an ESP sized at 3.55mb
Better Cities offers a BC-compatible replacement ESP sized at 456kb
But our ESP is a replacer, not a patch, most of the original ESP from Dulan Cult was unintentional dirty edits, which I cleaned out.

A better way to determine patches from replacers is to check whether the alternate ESP has the original ESP as a master or not. Wrye Bash is great for this, but the CS can also tell you.

Can I do that check before I install or activate any mods? (preferably in OBMM). You see the thing is I've just done a full reinstall of oblivion and I'm doing an MMMforOOO + my other mods install (Using/creating OMODS). I want to make sure I get the install/activation order right in OBMM and then organize my load order using BOSS & Wrye Bash. And launch oblivion via OBSE launcher.

So I would like to find out before I install/activate anything, if I can.

Thanks for your help

Most plugins do not need thousands of records cleaned, haha... However, in that particular case, the fact that the plugin has the same name is the better indicator of its not being just a patch. The description says that it is a replacer, so I would go with that. "Use instead" = replace. If the issue is about the original plugin being updated since the other one (is that the issue here?) then check the difference with TES4Edit.

Edit: I do not see how the description is unclear. Could someone elaborate? I seem to be missing something...

Typically the readme would be enough to tell you. If however the readme contradicts itself, then you would have to drop the edited ESP into the Data folder to be able to use Wrye Bash or the CS to see whether it requires the original ESP or replaces it.

As Tomlong says, usually a replacer ESP will have the same name as the original, but yet again, this is not a reliable way to determine replacers from patches, as it is not unusual for replacers to have a prefix or suffix added to the filename to designate HOW it differs from the original.

Cheers for the info. I ended up packing the "Lynges Thieves Highway for OOO.esp" into an omod and left the original "Lynges Thieves Highway.esp" in my docs.

I'll drop the esp into data as suggested. I take it once I've checked it in Wrye Bash I can just take it back out of data without Wrye Bash or OBMM freaking out or screwing with something?

Thanks again

It's the OOO version you need to check. See whether it is dependent on the original ESP or not. If it is, it's a patch and you need the original. If it isn't, it's a replacer and you don't need the original. It is safe to place an ESP into the Data folder and take it out again.
