Mac support?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:03 pm

I have 4 macs in my household for over 3 years, and none of them have ever crashed, and that's the God's honest truth. My mac that I'm on right now hasn't been turned off in months and it still hasn't crashed. I just push the sleep button at night, which is different than turning it off.
Programs have crashed, and World of Warcraft has crashed on it, but the OS? Nope, never.

You're nice to your macs. The hard drive in my G5 totally crashed and died because I didn't clean out the dust enough. Those things attract dust like the Hajj attracts pious Muslims. Also, on my current macbook, my crappy disc drive doesn't recognize certain blank DVD's. And no firmware update has fixed it yet.

I've also had software issues, like the X-11 being randomly incompatible with programs one day, then being ok the next day.

Just wanted to be fair and point out that issues do come up.

Yeah issues do come up, but for the most part I'd say PC's tend to crash a hell of a lot more than Macs. I had a PC before I got this mac and that piece of [censored] crashed almost once a week. Granted, it was a crappy computer, and this is a really nice one, but still, that doesn't make up for weekly crashes. Mac OS, IMO, seems far more stable than Windows, although I can't comment on Windows 7 because I've not used it.

I've noticed that no one has even brought up the reason why Macs tend to crash less...

It is a trade-off people.

Also, for hams: Corporations are not evil. As non-sentient, abstract concepts they cannot be good or evil. They exist for one purpose, to generate wealth for shareholders. We can discuss the methods that people use to achieve that goal, but that does not actually reflect on the concept of the corporation.

Well evil is a broad term, I suppose. If you define evil the way I define it: being devoid of compassion and altruism, and existing solely to fulfill your own selfish goals, stepping on whatever or whoever you feel you need to.

Than, I'd say at least most corporations are evil.

If you define evil as a purely human trait, then I guess corporations are not evil. But, then, the CEO's: that's debatable. Some of those people really are soul-less, uncreative monkeys in suits, whose life philosophy is that money is more important than anything and whose past accomplishments are just acquisition after acquisition, with a track record for never using their wealth to help anyone but themselves except for PR purposes.

Yes, because my friend plays on Mac, and I know how he feels when he can't play the games he likes.
There has been a lot of games added on Mac recently, so why not?

Huh, I've been doing the exact same on my Gateway, with Vista installed on it. I've had programs crash (never WoW though), but never the OS.

That's because comparing the crash rates between knowledgable users is pointless. Anyone with a marginal knowledge of how to run a computer can prevent OS crashes fairly easily.

All operating systems have good and bad points. My Macbook runs ridiculously slow, but it's over two years old and I usually run a few different applications on it at the same time. Windows 7 runs great on my gaming PC, but various little bugs and "features" peculiar to that OS often frustrate me. If you want to hate Apple, hate it for its many anti-competitive behaviours and refusal to offer users advanced features. Their hardware and software is actually pretty cool, and compares well with Microsoft's.

My dream is an Elder Scrolls game that runs natively on Linux. Alas, this is unlikely to happen.

I worry that porting the game to any other OS would create complications in the modding community, but I suppose it'd be worth it.

Which brings it back to preference of interface.

One of the main things that bothers me isn't really the OS Windows itself, but the different security software and the like available for it. When you first install anything, the default setting is, "harass me with 10 mundane notifications every time I start up and take precedence over anything I was in the middle of and minimize it and crash it."

On the other hand, most of mac's software is defaulted at "never let me know anything's wrong until after the motherboard as fried itself to death."

Again, preference. I prefer to start up my new computer and jump right into playing with it. I like to deal with the little settings later.

I run both Mac and Windows on my computer, and honestly, I enjoy using the Mac more when I'm on the Internet or writing a paper. Despite what many people say about it, I like the operating system a lot. Now that macs aren't using PPC, I don't see why they wouldnt develop for both Macs and PCs.

But, that's not what this thread is about..this thread is about whether or not Bethesda should make TES:V Mac compatible.

I voted yes, although I'll still be playing it on Xbox 306.

I had to get a macbook pro for school (for final cut pro).

That is what it is SUPPOSED to be about, but in the end it will end up a PC vs MAC thread, if it isn't one already. I have nothing against MACs actually, its their users that piss me off and those stupid commercials. They are arrogant, they trot around thinking they are awsome because they have one. They say MAC is better than PC, but can't tell anyone how or why, and they suddenly become deaf when someone states a logical and good reason as to why PCs are better than MAC.

PCs are better for games hands down. They are more powerful and have higher customizability.

MAC is better for the casual user, a simple OS thats not hard to use and compact hardware.

But every now and then a MAC user proudly states that MAC is superior to PC in every way even when its not.

PCs are hands down better for games because they are more powerful?
I have a quad core Mac Tower that I'm 99% positive could blow any PC you throw at me out of the water, or at least compare with it. It can run crysis on max settings.

Nvidia Graphics cards are the best out there and they are only made for PC.

I prefer PCs over Mac anyday but actually that's not true...there are Nvidia Graphics card out there for Macs, as for Nvidia being the best it's also talk for another thread not even related to TES or Beth in anyway.

As for what Betrayer of Humanity said, it's known that PCs are better for gaming due to more powerful graphics card being only avaible for PCs and like x death said the customization. But also the lack of games compatible with OS X which brings us back to the actual question, should TES V be compatible with Mac. IMO like I previously stated yes because I think it would benefit Beth which ends up by being something good for us.

I just checked the Nvidia drivers and I can't find MAC OS support.

The special drivers for nvidia on OSX and bootcamp are actually available from apple's website.

But, I strongly advise uninstalling apple's drviers and downloading them directly from nvidia's website, if you're on bootcamp. Don't uninstall all the drivers, ONLY uninstall the ones for the video card.

I say this from experience.

I voted No, only because I'd rather see games ported to Linux before OS X. Other than that, why not? Actually, why don't all developers switch to OpenGL? Then they could easily develop for OS X, Windows, AND Linux. I mean with OpenGL, a lot of the porting process would simply be recompiling code for the different OSs.

I'd rather see Mac support added later on than initially so it doesn't distract from development.

You know, if they just used OpenGL that wouldn't be much of an issue.
