Mace or Sword?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:24 am

With the new perks system rather than the skill-levelling system and class, I feel I'm at a loss. My traditional character has always been a Crusader or Warrior, as a jack-of-all-trades with close-combat weaponry. I'd usually carry around a sword as my main-hander, but also a back up mace (preferably with a similar enchant) and destruction magic to deal with any elementally-weakened enemies. However, with the introduction of perks and the demand to focus on one kind of weapon, I don't know what to do.

I love maces. They're nice and smashy. They remind me of my beloved Warcraft III paladins. And, as you face many undead in your general Elder Scrolls game, they're more practical - a sword won't bust a skull open or snap undead bones, while a mace definately will.

However, I feel that the Elder Scrolls' maces have been rather... lacking. They're not very good-looking, to be honest (except the one included with the Knight's of the Nine), which is why I almost always make a sword my main weapon before switching, if need be. Swords are also more traditionally heroic weapons, used by knights and Imperials in Cyrodiil. As I'm going to be playing an Imperial, a sword might be the right choice.

Anyway! What do you folks think? Will they update the look of the warhammer? Will swords remain supreme? Which should I pick for my game?

I'm sure you will be able to get the perks for them both, so...
Also, real Imperials use shortswords.

Depending on if you play pc, you can always just mod in different maces to use if you don't like the look of them, otherwise just make a character for each wep.

I'm mainly going with maces for the armor penentrating bonus but still be picking up one perk for the weapon which will probably have a bonus against unarnored opponents. So I will have a wep for humanoid enemies and also somithing more effective to be used against certain types of monsters.

Not only can you choose Mace and sword as a skill but you can primarily use both in combat (one in each hand). As you go up a level you can alternavely choose a perk for each weapon.

I'm still quite undecided. I like the styles of blade combat, but Axes are really fun too. I didn't use them much in OB due to daft decisions in their implementation. I tend to play "spellswords" but I might use an Axe in Skyrim.

if its a passive skill or a skill that only has a few seconds cool down it will be very easy for me to pass that up. i wish they would change it to ignore half of the enemies armor or something cause i dont know how that cant be game balancing. the one thing they could do is have npcs with super high health but that was the problem in oblivion.

You can easily level them both by either alternating or wielding a sword in one hand and a mace in the other. I don't see the issue.

If I had to choose though, sword. It's a more versatile weapon.

It's a viking themed game so I say go with an axe for a change. Otherwise I'd stick with maces.

Personally I'll go with one or two daggers and backstab my way through dungeons.

I almost always go with a sword and shield but I think i might go with Warhammers (if they are in and we don't just have maces) because I think it would be awesome to smash opponents with the new Havok behavior.

I'm stuck between a mace or sword, because I'm looking to do heavy damage as I will have a spell in one hand and wont pull of the two handed power spells. I'm edging towards the mace.

I've always been a swords guy - I never cared for blunt weapons (maces and axes) at all. But now that the new perks system and weapon specifications are coming out, I might just change my perception. We'll just have to wait and see, but most likely I'll always prefer swords.

Edit: Also,

Do one of each. Dual wield man

You cannot dual wield two different classes of weaponry; in fact you might not even be able to wield different types. I'm not sure, but I believe the GI articles stated that you can only dual wield the same types of bladed weapons, so if you have one steel longsword than you can dual wield another steel longsword, or two glass daggers, etc.

I could be wrong, but I definitely know that you can't dual wield a sword and a mace.

They haven't really removed the ability to be a jack of all trades. They've actually removed the ability to be a master of all trades and that is what we needed.

this is a very good point that everyone seems to be forgetting. The expression is "Jack of all Trades, but Master of None".

I am glad we can't be a master of all trades.
as far as being a crusader type of character, I would equip both a mace and sword, then use what is appropriate for the situation.
