I'm mad at Bethesda...

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 4:44 am

I was trying to get all the shouts in skyrim, so I decided to talk to arngeir and ask for the locations of those shouts. It was all good until I had to get a drain vitality shout. I got the shout but now the quest marker won't go away, so the game still thinks I didn't get the shout when I already have it! Anyway way to fix this?

PS: Bethesda.... Y U MAKE SO MUCH BUGS?!?!?

(where do bugs come from anyway? are they typos in the coding)

Try and get all the Marked for Death Words before Drain Vitality.

And yes, I believe they are typos in the code.

Bethesda doesn't 'make' bugs. Bugs are an inevitable thing in any kind of software, just like there's inevitably going to be trouble in the rest of life. Bugs in games can be due to many things - faulty code, engine incompatibility, hardware incompatibility, and a lot more. That's why it's often a really long and hard process to fix bugs, as you have to test them in multiple methods. Plus, Skyrim is almost too advanced for consoles - it's a huge game with awesome graphics, as I'm sure you've noticed. ;)

Try reloading a previous save and do it again, just to see if it's a general bug or if it's just one of the one-off, unique, and conditional bugs.

Not on PS3 anymore, its not. At launch it was good looking. If you were to compare it to a present day fully patched/DLC installed Skyrim though the game has gotten very noticeably inferior when it comes to the graphics. I don't complain because it was the trade off to fix a lot of those instability issues. To say it has awesome graphics now though, on PS3 at least, would be a blatant lie.

Looking forward to PS4 not having all these nonsense going on, just the same level of nonsense as xbox and PC gets. :D

here is hoping the ps4 and next boxare upgradeable, because they said they want those consoles to last upward to 15 or 20 years. That would be a great step in the right direction.

If by upgradable you mean "buy a new version every few years" then yeah, I can see that happening.

*Totally isn't cynical. Totally.*

Much more likely to be logical inconsistencies than typos. Most of the time code is constructed such that if it has a typo it simply won't compile, what you are experiencing is a runtime error not a compilation error. So its way more likely to be an error in communication between different people writing different bits of code or maybe a flaw in someones logic.

Not that this makes it Bethesda's fault, they are still only human.

Are there any comparison videos proving this? I see people saying this all the time, I'd like to see what they're talking about.

You can try getting another shout or 2, this will sometimes "complete" the previous quest from the Greybeards.

If you have an old save try reloading and absorbing the shout again, other then that there's not a lot you can really do.

Uh, memes.. :rolleyes:

Role games will always have bugs. I got REALLY pissed in Fallout New Vegas with Raul Tejada's story when you coudn't talk with ranger Andy. That was [censored] up.

I had the same problem on a character I was learning all the shouts with. It also prevented me from learning the locations of other shouts through the Greybeards since they'd always point me to the glitched wall, but fortunately, I'm on PC, so it was an easy fix via the console.

Not much you can do on Xbox though. You'll have to live with that glitched wall.

But a lot of review sites are predicting a very small rise in hardware capability in both the new xbox and ps4, many of my friends knowing this, have decided to just buy top level graphics cards for their computers (round £120 or so for a good one from where ive asked) rather than dishing out £3-400 on a new console.

Im in a bit of a grey area, I only have a laptop and you cant put graphics cards on laptops :(

I checked a pounds to dollars chart and it came out to about $187 American. Is this average? I'm just asking because my video card died.

This made me laugh.

To be honest that is a relatively small bug anyway.

High end cards range between $450 - $1000, but you won't get much out of these (right now) unless you want dual monitors or have some special need (rendering, bragging rights, etc.).

To max out Skyrim and most modern games:

Good: 560ti (Nvidia, $150 - $200) or 7850 (AMD, $150 - $250).

Better: 660ti ($250 - $330), 670 ($350 - $400) or 7870 ($230 - $250).

Here's a http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html that compares different generations of NVIDIA & AMD cards.

One thing to keep in mind, is that if you want to use high res textures, you're better off with a 3GB or 4GB card. 2GB isn't enough, unless you're very careful and conservative about adding textures. Many cards (from quality brands) offer a slightly more expensive variant with more VRAM, and for Skyrim it's definitely worth an extra $30-ish.

Having typos in your code is more or less impossible because you have to compile it first. It all has to do with intention.

If you make a recursive function that is supposed to spit out a certain result, but continues infinitely and loops out, that's a bug.

An example in Python code:

count=10

def desu (count):

if count<=0:
pass

elif count<0:
desu(count-1)
print("Desu")

This should print out 10 "Desu"s. However, if the "desu(count-1)" was "desu(count)" instead, the function would run until your compiler stopped it, or your computer told you to go pound sand. Technically, there are no errors, but the code functions differently than intended.

Yes you can. NVidia makes graphic cards for laptops, though the selection is usually pretty slim per model because of configuration changes.

Head to the website and put your model # in, and they'll list out cards that are compatible.

I've a Dell XPS 17 and the graphics card was upgraded. Sorry, I don't know the model of the card, but I do know NVidia has a new one for it, as they constantly send me notices saying I can add it.

Too bad I don't game on it. The only reason I got it was it's better for processing HD streams. :)
